True to form RTE News at Nine began tonight's report on the two league finals with a sending off. Important to begin with a negative image rather than some of the evening's superb scores or flowing passing movements. And there are some who think this all happens by chance.

the discussion was on what justification is there to show a club rugby match on rte considering the popularity of the sport in the country..this compared with numerous gaa matches which arent shown which would get much bigger viewership and interest...this thread is quite good at highlighting numerous examples of bias against the gaa and especially highlighting the bias towards one sport in rte over others

ormond you continuosly tell us how provinces put out their best teams in pro12
well todays report states clealry otherwise

When measured by the number of minutes played, at least half a dozen of Leinster's frontline players have not been playing for their province during Pro12 weekends for an average two games out of every three, or, 66 per cent of the time.

Of nine Leinster and Ireland players just Luke Fitzgerald played more than 40 per cent of the time in Leinster's games in the league until their defeat to Ulster last week.

Leinster have played 20 Pro12 matches (1,600 minutes) and have two remaining before the knock-out stages

None of the other frontline players including Rob Kearney, Mike Ross, Devin Toner, Jordi Murphy, Cian Healy, Seán O'Brien, Jamie Heaslip or Jack McGrath played more than 35 per cent of the game time so far in the competition.

Ian Madigan has played almost half of the total time, 777 minutes in 12 games.

In fairness Leinster can only pick who is available to them. Players miss League games when playing Ireland much like inter county players will miss club games. From that list Kearney, O'Brien, Healy, Jordi Murphy all had long term injuries, Heaslip broke his back ! and Ross was dropped. In any league teams will usually rest players at certain times, ie before big cup games, but especially in such an intensely physical sport like rugby.

Lads the rugby v GAA posts are very petty, all great sports. Funnily enough most of those mentioned above were excellent GAA players. Madigan and Kearney in particular could potentially have played for their counties

If it was just because players were away on international duty monkey you would expect similar figures for English players and their clubs but that's not the case because the English premiership is taken seriously by all clubs and the top players play most games. The Dragons coach said before their recent game against Leinster that he would use it as a "really good training session" for a future European game! GAA managers can be honest about how they treat the league as they are not trying to fool people to part with their money to come and watch the games - rugby officials will tell you how every game in the Pro12 is vital as they need customers to come watch to pay the wages but anyone looking at the games and team selections can tell they treat it as the second rate competition it is.

what GAA do you want RTE to cover more?? Do tg4 not have extensive coverage of many competitions in hurling/gaelic?
This thread is only a thread on a messageboard if people want change why isn't there actual lobbying on a mass scale on social media etc and try show RTE that theyre not doing the job people expect of them

many of those players have had long time periods out with injury or have been playing internationally which would affect their pro12 game time especially when several pro12 games have been played on the same weekend as internationals.
Sean O Brien out injured for good part of the season, jordi murphy the same, healy out injured, heaslip and jack mc grath all have been out for decent spells with injuries.
