Janesboro I meant minority in terms of people attending games and number of clubs. They are more GAA clubs in Cork alone than there are rugby clubs in all of Ireland. And you have to admit the match Saturday did not need to be shown live. You would see more at a junior hurling match in Limerick than was at the match in Temple Hill.

In fairness to the good people of Antrim I feel I should point out that due to an unexplained technical glitch I have been given an inter-county transfer, Dublin to Antrim, without actually requesting one. So can I ask rugby union posters to stop attacking Antrim and dead British politicians and instead redirect their bile to the good people of Dublin. Much appreciated. P.S. In fairness to the BBC at least on St. Patrick's Day they showed both the football and rugby union schools' finals unlike Rugby Telefis Eireann who only showed highlights of their own D4 sport. But then BBC in the north is held to account for its level of balance unlike RTE which does whatever it likes and of course we all know what sport it likes most.

It's almost 7 months now since RTE last showed any live football or hurling. In contrast RTE today completed a clean sweep of live rugby union coverage. In those 7 months RTE has shown live rugby union at 7 different levels. 6 Nations. Friendly internationals. Reserve team internationals. Women's internationals. U-20 internationals. Pro 12. And as of this afternoon club rugby in the form of the Bateman Cup Final played out in front of maybe 200 people. So rugby union at every level is catered for by RTE. Quite a contrast to football and hurling. Remember they decided not to cover any of the Subsidiary Competitions in January when there were no contractual issues. They could have covered the O'Byrne Cup Final or the McKenna Cup Final both of which attracted huge attention and large crowds. Where there a will there's a way. What next an AIL game live? We really are badly served by Rugby Telefis Eireann.
What GAA were RTE to have shown in the past 6 months or so when the rights of all competitions being played and broadcasted were owned by other stations.
You keep going on about some of those competitions. The wolfhounds international is tied into 6nations deal. u20 is as well and womens. All the same type of competition. pro12 is a different level with different sides. a handful of club games. whats wrong with that?
You refer to competitions like o byrne as subsidiary competitions. No wonder theyre not covered when theyre referred to like that

Fair points again media man. We got the clubs cup final in rugby union in all it's "glory" yesterday and boy it was truly God awful s***e. We'll probably get the final of The AIL too. RTE's bias is staggering.
there is no bias. So a game being poor makes your argument. God help us then as no sporting game should never be shown if the standard doesn't reach your high standards

I think the point the lads are trying to make is that for such a minority sport rugby get's a lot of coverage.
"such a minority sport". Biggest pro team sport in the country. one of biggest overall. Gets huge attendances. TV/newspaper coverage is warranted by viewing figures etc

the game in temple hill was a national final. attendance irrelevant in many ways. Just like many events in many other sports/areas of life shown on tv

When did rte show highlights of the ulster schools final - i thought they showed a clip on the news -- Its not a D4 sport - go watch a club game anywhere outside of dublin and you will see that- go to watch lansdowne v young munster or terenure v clontarf (neither of which are in d4) sat and you will see its far from a d4 sport.

But then BBC in the north is held to account for its level of balance unlike RTE which does whatever it likes and of course we all know what sport it likes most. ----- Well they showed 30 plus gaa games (plus weekly sunday game plus excellent radio coverage) they also show plenty of soccer so i would argue all 3 get their fair share. (getting conscious of not using caps Green and Red!!)

Isnt it amazing if you go onto rugby websites you dont get fellas knocking other sports yet on here a minority feel the need to denegrate rugby. Why is that?

I think, janesboro, its not the rugby itself that people dislike, but the way its pushed. Obvioulsy people on rugger sites have no cause whatsoever to complain about unfair coverage.

That speaking in general. I myself actually think the game is stupid but a good sportsman is a good sportsman no matter what hes playing. What i dont get is lads here saying our soccer team have more merit than the rugger-boggers. They are genuinly useless, at least the ruggers win something nowadays, and im saying this as someone whose last rugger game witnessed was when jonah lomu ate some engliosh lads

Janesboro I don't understand what relevance it is whether a poster hates rugby or not when commenting on how RTE treat our national games compared to other sports. Mediaman presents plenty of facts on here which he believes shows GAA is poorly served by RTE compared to rugby in particular, if the only defence you have for RTE is that he hates rugby then I would suggest he is winning the argument. I played rugby when in Ireland but never heard of the Bateman Cup, it turns out it was cancelled at the start of WWII and was only started up again in 2006. I would suggest that your average sports fan would have very little knowledge of it so I am unsure how big an appetite there would be for it to be screened on tv. By your own admission the game was very poorly attended, if rugby fans don't care about the competition you have to wonder if the money spent on the broadcast could not have been better spent on covering other more popular sporting events. RTE themselves admitted that there was no justification for the coverage they gave schools rugby over GAA schools competitions on the news and that they will try to achieve a better balance in the future so clearly there is a bias in RTE, even if you believe it is accidental.

SOma i note you use the term other sports Soma my point is that RTE show plenty of soccer too they show league of ireland (i dont have a problem with it
myself) yet nobody is cribbing about soccer coverage - we had one club game on this season there will be a league of ireland soccer game on rte on friday night yet i cant understand why some posters are cribbing about rugby being shown but not about soccer being shown if they cribbed about other sports cumulutively being shown against gaa then fair enough but it seems to me tis all anti rugby-

Mediaman presents plenty of facts on here which he believes shows GAA is poorly served by RTE compared to rugby in particular,- and i have presented facts to the contrary

if the only defence you have for RTE is that he hates rugby then I would suggest he is winning the argument. - look at his comment on another thread stating the RFU would not let soccer into twickenham as twas working class ...... even when i gave he 2 newspapers articles alluding to the actual reason soccer has not been played in twickers he was still having a pop at rugby

To be fair, it'd be a crime if the Irish rugby team didn't win something every now and again. Their main competition has 6 teams and for a long time only had 5 and before that 4.

If you can't win in those circumstances then you're really struggling.

In fact the Irish rugby team has only ever reached as far as the quarter finals in a "World" Cup I heard recently. The best they've ever reached is the last 8 of a sport where there are only essentially ten or so teams! V poor showing.

We've a poor soccer team at the moment but they are competing in a world sport and are in the most competitive region of that sport. The same can't be said of rugby.

I can fully understand RTE showing an AIL final or even semi final. It's like showing and all ireland club GAA final. But last Saturday's match is doing them no favours in regards coming across as fair to all sports. It was the final of a tournament pretty much. It can be dressed up any way people want. It was a tournament final in front of 200 people.

And to be fair it's third tier rugby. You have international, provincial and then club. It's the equivalent of showing the final of an intermediate club hurling or football competition or a senior club match minus the county players. It just wouldn't happen and that's a fact. Nobody can come on here and say RTE would show a GAA match of similar level to the rugby last weekend.

Janesboro soccer is probably the biggest sport in terms of participation in the country, with the League of Ireland being the highest level of competition - it would be daft for RTE not to cover some of the games. There were 17k at last years FAI cup final, compare that to the crowd at Temple Hill at the weekend. Many here complain that RTE show no ladies soccer, which again has large participation numbers and underage teams throughout the country, but show a number of womens rugby games despite the level of participation being much miniscule. It just doesn't seem to make sense that when spending the limited funds RTE have, rugby seems to benefit more than any other sport despite being well down the list in terms of participation. The issue most have is with the unbalanced coverage, not necessarily with rugby. If you have to drag statements Mediaman has made about rugby in other threads in here then again I would suggest you are losing the argument about RTEs coverage of our national games.

describing the soccer team as useless while bigging up the achivements of the rugby team merely proves peoples point..they are in a 6 team competition every year..obviously every now and then they are going to do somewhat well..the fact remains that the soccer team has performed better in world cups then the rugby team..if you try and claim a rugby world cup quarter final is the same achivement as getting to a soccer quarter final for a country of our size then there is nothing i can do for you..compare how many people welcomed us home when we did well in the soccer world cup compared to the rugby..i think that tells the difference better than anything...you go on about the league of ireland janesboro but what is wrong with showing that?..it has a decent interest to it...there is a good bit more interest in league of ireland then club rugby in this country..that is a fact..if you want to be objective you cant put them in the same sentence like you have done..people dont have a problem with rugby..they have a problem with the unwarranted coverage a lot of it gets on rte compared to other sports which are more popular and would get greater tv viewership

Well said fabio. We are the only one of the home nations who have failed to qualify for a World Cup semi final. That by any standards is failure . There were very few people at the rugby final last Saturday . The venue was lamentable . Over the last five years the average attendance at The FAI Cup Final is 21,700.

Greengrass (Louth) - Posts: 6031 - 21/04/2015 16:01:04    1716074

But the soccer team are useless, got to 2 quarter finals by the skin of their teeth (out of about 30 finals) and never looked remotely like winning. The LOI is rubbish too, painfully boring and awful, is there more than 5 two-footed players in the entire league? Anyway if RTE weren't busy ramming rugby down our throat, they'd be ramming soccer. So lay off the love-in, the average soccer head hates GAA probably more than the rugger bogger

everybody knows the league of ireland isnt exactly massive but it still gets decent attendances just it should do better due to how big the sport is in the country is all...the cup final especially always gets good attendances..there is no comparison to it with club rugby which has been completely wiped out by provincial rugby

fabio8 (USA) - Posts: 2182 - 21/04/2015 17:17:31    1716113

Pound for pound the League of Ireland standard is not as bad as people assume. Just two full time professional teams and one of them doing poorly despite getting paid. The other teams are part-timers, many of them sign-on in the off season. Arguably some of the LOI players are more dedicated than GAA players who work or are students and professional rugby players. So what if they're not blessed with ambidextrous feet like some posters here seem to be. They're playing the sport they love to the highest club level here. For that they can, at least be admired, even if your favourite sport is GAA, Rugby or hillwalking.
