Our sport on the National Broadcaster

well If what I read today is true RTE may lose the right to broadcast the six nations as it up for grabs in 2017. so SKY/Setanta/BT Sport will surely be able to outbid RTE. also both George Hook and Tom McGurk have left RTE.

Ormond, how many people welcomed the Irish teams home from Scotland ? I can't get figures anywhere . How many first choice players were the other ladies home nations teams short due to their involvement in the Olympic sevens qualifiers ? We apparently are not involved in the sevens competitions .

Ormo
It is a shame the hockey team didn't get more coverage.

Ormo I don't suppose there is any chance you would start a blog about this lack of hockey coverage on RTE rather than whinging on here about it?
Roger
Jeez, there are some awful old dinosaurs and lads with chips on their shoulders on here.RTE pay a fortune for the Six Nations rights and for six or seven weeks they promote the living daylights out of rugby, because they paid the money and have something that nobody else in Ireland, not SKY or BT Sport, not TV3 or TG4 have. It's simple business and promotion.
I wonder if we looked hard enough and discovered some warped old rugby message board in the middle of the summer, would it be full of old codgers going on about how RTE is obsessed with GAA, and that is all that the national broadcaster focus on for four months.
I can remember RTE showing league finals live, the club finals, ladies football and camogie. The don't have those rights anymore, so why the hell are they going to promote games that other stations are showing live. Did any of us see many clips or goals from yesterday's games on TV3 or Sky News?

Roger your post doesn't make a lot of sense for a number of reasons. RTE is the national station and is to provide a service to the public, it should be covering whatever is of interest to the public. Also, while RTE does not have coverage of the Heineken Cup, Premier League football, Lions tour or rugby world cup, they give extensive coverage to all these events. Rightly so, they are of varying interest to the public, but one wonders why they then ignore the biggest female sports in Ireland because other stations have the rights.

Yes it did make for great TV & fair play to Ireland but score difference is no way to win a championship, in my opinion

In an ideal world you would want rugby like that everyday but its the fact that score difference was the deciding factor in the end that created the scenario where they all went out to put up big scores.

Joxer soccer is the most popular game in Ireland to play ,it has more registered players in the Republic of lreland than GAA has in the whole 32 counties .

----
I didn't mention anything about GAA. In terms of participation I think soccer is about third, behind exercise and swimming from memory. GAA is about fifth or sixth I think, behind golf, for example, in terms of participation. All well ahead of rugby it has to be said, which is the point I was making.

Was that not a public vote badmonkey ? They may have had no choice but to give her the award . Did not the Cork ladies win Team of The Year despite not having had one second of their games broadcast live by the "national broadcaster"? Like I said they ignore all female team sports bar ladies rugby. They also ignore Katy Taylor . How many fights have been broadcast live and in full by RTE since the Olympics badmonkey ?

"That woman" goldrick ? She is only a multiple European and World champion. She is only one of the greatest ever sports people we have had . How many of her fights have been broadcast live and in full by RTE since the Olympic Games in 2012 ? She was winning European and World titles . It may be a minority sport but so too is ladies rugby with 4,000 adult participants . Yet all 15 of the ladies rugby home nations games played over the last three years have broadcast live and in full on either RTE Radio or TV . Great balance there.

hockey basketball soccer camogie and gaelic football are just 4 womens sports who i imagine have much larger participation and interest yet receive 0 coverage from the national broadcaster...they even show a second rate 6 nations with weakened teams being put out..no doubt a good few late late show appearances on the cards also

Here's a story you probably should have seen but didn't over the last few days. RTE CHIEFS LEFT RED FACED OVER FALLING RUGBY VIEWING FIGURES. RTE today apologised to the IRFU for a drop in 6N viewing figures. In 2014 the 6N decider involving Ireland and France attracted a peak audience of 891,000 viewers however in spite of 6 weeks unrelenting RTE hype last weekend's 2015 Ireland Scotland decider only attracted a peak audience of 850,000 viewers, 40,000 less than last year. An RTE source blamed the Irish people for failing to appreciate the hard work RTE has been doing to grow the best game in the world. The source went on to say, 'We did our best. Hopefully this only represents a tiny blip on the road to world rugby domination. It would serve the public right if we decided to shelve plans to show live Leinster Schools senior and junior, live AIL, live Towns Cup and live Tag Rugby in 2016 as a suitable way of commemorating the Easter Rising in which so many rugby players fought (on the British side of course).' The IRFU was as usual anavailable for comment.

Ormond if my local small rural Junior ladies football team were playing a important game in Glasgow, i have no doubt the would have brought a bigger crowd then the irish women s rugby team had. What makes it worst is the amount of Irish living in Scotland, the amount of Irish rugby fans in Scotland last weekend and the fact this game was to decide the 6 nations. If Rte wanted to get women viewers and increase there advertising then it would make no sense to cover women's rugby and not show one of the more popular female sports. Second captains started it fourth series last Wednesday and still not one ladies gaa player on it. We were told by some on here that when the six nations was over there wouldn't be rugby on but everyday on the news there has been rugby and there was a extended Saturday to cover a pro 12 match, the have not done this for the national league. Rte are only given the big football and hurling games a mere 45 minutes between them, yet the are given 65 minutes to 3 pro 12 games.
