Mayo had a big win against Cork in 2011 when nobody gave them a chance. That big win gave them belief and they haven't look back since. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1572 - 31/07/2014 19:21:50 1629127 Link 0 |
Having read a lot of posts, newspaper articles etc this week all the experts are looking to see could there be an upset in any of the games and the only thing they can come up with is Cork beating Mayo (which really wouldn't be a shock as Cork are still a good team and historically have given us a fair few hammerings). However the big thing they are missing is GALWAY BEATING KERRY! My reason for saying this is that KERRY ARE NOT AS GOOD AS PUBLIC OPINION LEADS US TO BELIEVE! They are nowhere near winning an All Ireland. It is underestimated how poor Cork were in the Munster Final and the big positive for Galway to take out of that match is that James O' Donoghue scored ten points that day. Put two men on O' Donoghue and Kerry will struggle to match the score that a sharp Galway forward line can put up against a shaky Kerry defence. The real winning of this game will be midfield. Galway need to have a smart kick out plan and use their mobility to win clean kick outs. Darren O' Sullivan is another key link man for Kerry and he is not starting on Sunday which is strange. As a Mayo fan I fear a wounded Cork far more than Kerry. The only reason I would like to see Kerry win is so we can really expose them in a semi final and get revenge for the hammerings we took from them on finals gone by. However I would still be happy if Galway can do the job as Connacht football needs it. Most of the mayo fans will be in for the game and the majority will be supporting Galway, I hope ye wait on and return the favour! Connacht abú! Mayo mystery, what are u basing kerry having a weak defence on, you are just showing anlack of knowledge there! Kerry have a few lads bar o'donoghue who can kick a score as well! Also why is it everyone keeps mentioning how poor cork were against kerry but there is no mention of meaths performance against the dubs! Mayo are gone way back as well, rossies shoukd have taken them! as_ky (Kerry) - Posts: 535 - 31/07/2014 21:07:07 1629196 Link 0 |
People are getting way too ahead of themselves in regards to Galway. Whilst both teams are in transition, Galway are in the early stages of rebuilding. Kerry have blended a few young lads with the experienced heads, whilst Galway barring 2 OR 3 are all inexperienced. Give it 2-3 years and Galway will be competitive but after a tight first 45 mins, Kerry to pull away ~PHS Pope_has_spoken (Dublin) - Posts: 138 - 31/07/2014 21:09:52 1629198 Link 0 |

This could be a great game of football if both teams went man for man and see who has the best players. No chance of happening as Kerry have embraced the blanket defence with gusto. Galway will have a go at it but their hearts just aren't into it (blanket defence/sweeper system). Galway have more speed around the pitch and best chance is to get Walsh isolated man to man with Killian Young and isolate Conroy on O'Mahony (who is not really a full back). All that said, the Galway cornerbacks are poor and will probably be skinned on Sunday. Kerry by 5-6 points. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1109 - 01/08/2014 12:03:41 1629339 Link 0 |
'Embraced the blanket defence with gusto'? I must have been watching some other county altogether so down in Cork about a month ago. There's a difference between playing a centre forward in a deep roving role and employing a defence set-up a la some Northern sides. Bringing your half forward line back into defence crests a blanket defence. It doesn't matter if your from ulster or Kerry. 7-8 man defense is a blanket defense. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1109 - 01/08/2014 16:46:34 1629527 Link 0 |

I got that distinct impression myself Kingdom boy, and the thread is meant to be on about the Galway/Kerry match! God knows what its going to be like around here if Mayo end up facing us in a Semi final!!!! TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 01/08/2014 20:33:29 1629608 Link 0 |
Mayo fans on this forum are quiet bitter, Here in Kerry when got hammered by Meath in 01, we regrouped and came back in 04. I feel we will beat galway by 2 points and Cork will take Mayo, for the simple reason Corks forwards are streets ahead of Mayo. kerryrowz (Kerry) - Posts: 833 - 01/08/2014 20:42:00 1629611 Link 0 |
Just watched the Galway lads on RTE 2 talkin about the 08 game, Joyce and Meehan were class that day, even though there neighbours the difference in humility between Galway and Mayo is massive. kerryrowz (Kerry) - Posts: 833 - 01/08/2014 20:59:55 1629616 Link 0 |
Sure Mayo still hold a grudge with Meath since 96 as the lost the final & the fight. westkerry (Kerry) - Posts: 1250 - 01/08/2014 21:06:21 1629618 Link 0 |
The 2008 Q-final really was some game alright, I enjoyed watching the Galway lads reminisce about it last night. I was living up near Ranelagh at the time, and it was raining that heavily coming out of Croke Park that my phone, even though it was in my pocket, got so wet it never worked again. I still have the match programme up in the cupboard at home but all the pages got fused together because of the rain so I can't even open it these days!! I didn't mention Mayo at all. This thread is about Galway and Kerry. I didn't realise that using the phrase "blanket defense" in describing The Kerry " defensive tactic" would get ye all going. It must bring back memories of Tyrone. There is a nice photo of Declan O Sullivan "creating space" with 3 other Kerry men on the rte website this morning. The new Kerry approach (not blanket defense) looks a bit better because they have Declan o Sullivan to kick pass it forward. Most others have to hand pass it up the field because they have no one good enough to kick a ball 60 yards. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1109 - 02/08/2014 08:58:25 1629661 Link 0 |
