Reaction to the Ulster final

This is a serious question, did you watch the first half of the Ulster Final? Some Ulster people seem to forget that the primary objective of spectatorship is entertainment. Forget 'competitiveness''. A chess game can be 'competitive' it doesn't mean that many people want to sit there for an hour watching it. Personally I get entertainment from watching the skills of the game executed well, great foot passing, excellent point taking, high fielding, pace, athleticism, aggressive but fair tackling.

I did watch it I was at it and it was enthralling. During the minor game that we got reports of the score from Croke Park that it was 1-6 to 0-3 after bout 17/18 mins and you just knew that it was too high scoring to be a real competitive game and Dublin would run up 20 or so points which they did. Though to be fair that's not Dublins fault.

On another note your on about aggressive fair tackling - compare the brawl and biting at the end of the Lenister final to Karl Laceys disposession tackle in the first half against Monaghan. High fielding - Neil Gallaghers catches. Excellent point taking - 3 each alone from McNiallais/McBrearty and what about Finlays point for Monaghan in the first half.

People see what they want to see.

in fairness mesamis that contrasts greatly with some strong anti-donegal stuff being made so people probably feel obligated to defend their position seeing as it is being attacked consistently and prominently on a national stage via the sunday game and newspapers and so on....whatever your viewpoint on donegal either way..i think that may be the reason why people feel the need for 'recognition' or whatever

For every over the top "anti-Donegal" point there's plenty praising them. This constant need for validation that some fans have is weird.

People aren't attacking Donegal but rather the style of football. I disagree with those that do not enjoy the style of football but I don't see why people don't get that they just don't like the style of football.

I turned the game off after 10 mins, but it was the day after the wedding and I had to mingle :)

Please don't attack me o Farneymen but it was Muineachan's stultifying lack of ambition that turned me away...predicted a 3-4 point margin for na Conallaigh at that tender stage.

But: did either side break any rules with what they were doing? I think not

That's their prerogative so

Listen I like watching Donegal and have always said it but why are some posters obsessed with everyone saying how great Donegal are and unable to fathom how some people might not like watching Donegal?

People are entitled to their opinions and if they do not like to watch defensive football then that's their business. Why the obsession with getting a pat on the head from everyone?

Is 3 Ulster and 1 All-Ireland title not good enough without the pats on the head from everyone telling yous hwo great yous are?

Good post mesamis but I would take issue with a couple of points

It's the labels like "negative" & "defensive" that drive me up the wall. The present Dublin team make everyone look defensive but in my opinion Donegal are neither. 3-16 & 0-15 in the Ulster semi & final doesn't suggest a defensive mindset, it is the type of defence that Donegal play that people don't like. A lot of posters don't like to see forwards running back & fair enough.

The other point which another poster made was that t.v. doesn't do them justice. The amount of off the ball movement that the t.v. viewer doesn't see is huge & a lot of what they do makes much more sense if seen live.

As for being liked, I couldn't give a rats ass. Respect will do any day of the week ahead of popularity. People loved us for years when we were being kicked around the place but it didn't butter the parsnips.

i agree but due to the sheer amount of over the top points attacking them i can see why..you are right..people are completely entitled to enjoy certain styles over others but it gets a bit ridiculous when stuff like never watching the game again and ruining the sport and so on is put forth...'rolling in grave' etc.....donegal at their best can be a very good exciting team to watch as evidenced by the kerry and cork games in 2012 and also kildare in 2011
