You are right Nick. We should replace it with this:

Just to show that we no longer care who we are.

Why does the anthem mean so much to people anyway? I don't really get it, I honestly think playing it before every game when there's no national team present is just a boring formality.

Totally correct Htaem. Sooner we become Birmingham the better. We need to get rid of all this backward Irish stuff. Diversity man!

Good grief - if my Father were dead he'd be turning in his grave.

But sure listen going to a Gaa match and supporting your county is already one of the most Irish things you can do, playing the anthem doesn't enhance the experience.

1627071 Your poor achy breaky heart decky.Uve a lot to be worried about lad.

It's our country we're talking about here 'lad'. If you've no respect for what our national anthem stands for, then I'd suggest you've a lot to be worried about yourself. Would you prefer it to be livelier, get David Guetta to do a remix, something like that?

Star Spangled Banner is played before a lot of sporting occasions in the States.

GSTQ is played before the FA Cup Final as well as other sporting events that are not international I'd say.

Let's not try and pretend that the playing of an anthem before a non international sporting event is a uniquely Irish and backward thing.

There's an argument that it is disrespectful to overplay it alright.

Star Spangled Banner is played before ALL baseball and NFL games Mes Amis. And lord forbid you disrespect that! We are falling over ourselves backwards to get rid of our culture and history and heritage. If people don't like who we are then they know what to do. We are going to end up like the native Brits, apologising for being even here!

Oh I know it's not a uniquely thing but I'm not concerned about other countries, we're only discussing ourselves here.

Why would your father potentially turn in his grave, over someone having an opinion?

The removal of the angelus was being talked about last week on Joe Duffy. Add this to it and cover your passports in brown paper while you're at it. No pride.

Come on dec lad.if u read my posts ive said ive always respected the anthem.Ive been to 18 All Ireland hurling finals and 8 football finals.I stand and sing right to the end.No whooping and hollering. My point is that although i know the abthem in Irish,i do not know what it translates as word for word in English.Goldrick has done a good job in that.I believe it is an important part of our games.Especially for finals and would never be supportive of its removal.

It's amazing how in any sort of conversation about the Irish anthem the British always seem to get dragged into it.

Yes ged. Embarrassing to see that even GAA is infected with this rush to abolish our nationality. People should look at what has happened in other countries which have rolled over to multi culturalism. Try being "multi cultural" in the places those people come from! Explains why the Israelis are not about to roll over and die any time soon.

The angelus is a disgrace after all the horrors the Catholic institution subjected this country to, being honest I'm indifferent to the playing of the anthem at games but given the opportunity I'd remove religion from our island nevermind the bloody angelus.

Okay, so we more or less agree, you just decided to take the mick for no reason.

Why is the Angelus a disgrace Htaem? Is it a disgrace in Spain or Italy or Portugal? It is part of our heritage. What do we give up next?

Htaem, in hindsight I regret bringing religion in to it as it's a different issue but a tradition none the less. Was the GAA not founded to strengthen our identity? Erosion of identity and traditions has others on this Island up in arms with any sign of a threat. Whether you agree or disagree with what they want to hold on to at least they show passion on who they are.

If the national anthem means so much to gaels how come the renditions are so aenemic & watery. Only for it being on the screens in Croke Park the Artane Boys band would play it in almost complete silence.

I would have thought that if the anthem meant so much, everyone would be bellowing it out, hand on heart with tears streaming down their faces.

Never seen it & I don't think I ever will.

Fair enough ged, I don't fully agree with you but I respect your opinion, I personally don't like national pride because none of us get to choose where we're from but that's just me.

Ps, I'm very happy being Irish, I've never wanted to be fron anywhere else but I'm only passionate about it when it comes to sports, that's all really.
