Uneven Football Qualifier Groups

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The bureaucrats' defence of this year's qualifier structure is likely to centre around the calendar, spaces between matches and - let's be honest - previous concerns from us in Ulster about short turnarounds for beaten provincial finalists entering round four of the qualifiers.

If this is to be properly addressed, then maybe it is time for the Ulster Council to consider having two Ulster quarter finals on the same weekend. It would condense the time required, and potentially free up some space that would put our provincial title on a similar timescale to others - thus making this Group A & Group B nonsense, redundant. For the record I would be reluctant to take this step. Having an Ulster championship match punctuate each weekend of early summer is something we all cherish - it gives our championship profile & pace. It is a large part it is what makes it special.

However the practicalities of geography are stacked against us. No one in Ulster doubts the credentials of the Cork & Kerry footballers. What frustrates us are the seemingly bureaucratic obstacles that prevent our teams playing them more often in open AI competition.

On balance, to get what we want, we may be forced to concertina the length of the Ulster Championship - a price worth paying ?

Treatystoner enough of that silly talk, there are only 10 football teams with any ability worth talking about, the 9 in Ulster and the Dubs. Ya ok Longford beat Derry and Laois beat Fermanagh but there were special circumstances. What we need is seeding so all 9 Ulster teams get into the last 8, and don't get drawn against each other. However the Munster championship is a complete joke, because there is seeding used in the draw there. From my time on HS these are the things I have learned.

And just to be sure you don't miss out on the festivities of the day, there are a couple of parades you could take in with yer white hat:

Hunter Moore Memorial Flute Band
Route: Hunter Moore Social Club - Belfast Roa -Downshire Road - Newry Orange Hall
Time: 08:30 to 09:00

If thats not enough then go on to the Parades Commission website and you could plan your whole day around them and even get to take in the match. Sure what else would you be at!

While I am normally open minded and embracing of other cultures, I think I will gracefully decline on this occasion.

In all seriousness though, I can't envisage too many Kildare supporters travelling to Down on the 12th for the game.

Wexford v laois is tasty the game went to extra time down there last year

Down v kildare and Loosers of Armagh Monaghan v Tyrone is the standout tie

Aye, to be honest find it hard to fathom how they didn't consider the date when they were fixing the game. Same for the Tyrone match, which, if its Armagh they face will be in Omagh the same night. It has the potential for a few of the boyos out fuelled up to cause a bit of mayhem. In Antrim they stopped playing games around the days before and after as there were a few incidents for people/players travelling to games in buses etc.

The matches may yet be played on the 13th which I think will happen with Kildare Down. Us GAA folk don't want anything to do with that Orange Vermin so the CCCC will schedule around it.

Why ever not bryanadams, 'Orangefest' is a cultural celebration filled with love and laughter, a family day out where people can eat ice cream (theres always a photo in the tele of a senior orangeman with a 99) freely express their religious and cultural identity in a condusive atmosphere.

Up the rebels. That would be fine except for six day turnaround as the next round for these teams is fixed for the 19th. The whole thing is a f***up
