The time keeping issue

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think you are wrong in that Torcaill. Pat McEneaney was on the Sunday Game a couple of weeks ago and said the ref no longer tells the 4th official how many minutes should be put up on the board for additional time, it is now one of the linesmen who do it in intercounty championship games. The linesman now keeps time, and tells the ref that the 70 minutes are up and he needs to play x minutes of injury time. The idea of this is to reduce the workload of the ref, which seems fair enough.

It is still the ref who decides the time. (100% sure on this one :) ) There were plans to bring in the hooter system but this has been shelved for the moment.

Torcaill, this is the major lie that is being told by the GAA, that somehow the cost for a hooter system is too much. This cant be true, its not asking much to have a clock in every ground, that stops and starts during injuries, and substitutions.

This is an impossible thing to referee precisely. If there is going to be something done about it, then it would need to be black and white, ie a massive stopwatch display on a big screen that ticks backwards, with a hooter at the end of the game.

Difficulties arrising from this would be players looking at running it down in more specific and cynical terms than they are doing already. It would also call on an issue of the black card to be raised in relation to deliberate timewasting, or at least a yellow card especially early in a game.

The earlier remark about time being added on for a goalkeeper taking a free does not add up properly, as that is the pay off of using a player who has to run the length of the pitch to do this. If it goes over, then great, but if it doesnt work, then it would be better to use an outfield player especially if time is tight for a team to get an equalizer etc. I think that Tyrone messed up at the end, they should have either played it short or sean kavanagh should have slotted it over. (should it have been a free in the first place or did he buy a free at an earlier time from the same place)?

Anyway, good luck to tyrone in the back door, I always like watching them, they will come good again if they work on the areas that they really need to at this stage.

I don't believe that the cost factor was the issue. The main issues require rule changes and this is why it was deferred until 2014.

The referee addeded two minutes right or wrongly, he blew the game up when Tyrone were in possession in the middle of the field, time was up at that stage the referee did nothing wrong here.

There was no onus on the referee to allow Tyrone to run up the field in search of a score, NO ONUS.

Also there is no provision in the rules to add on time at the end of a game for substitutions, bookings, black card incidents etc etc.

Tyrone had 72 minutes to win the game they didn't do it within that time.

I think Tyrone need to be looking at their own players performances rather than using the referee as a scapegoat for them not getting something from the game.

Tyrone couldn't have an easier game coming up than their next game with Louth.

The problem is of course unworkable at club level - its hard enough at times to get one official to turn up!

The clock/scoreboard system has been in use in NYC for close to sixty years. The ref tells the scoreboard operator when to start the clock. He signals when he wants it stopped for injuries and restarted. This way there is no added time and all in attendance know what time is left. The buzzer is automatic and goes off when it reaches zero. If the ball has left the boot or hurley before the buzzer sounds the score stands.
Since teams have begun to use the goalie to take frees way out the field and up to the penalty spot more time is killed in this fashion than any other and time cannot be added on for these delays, nor for bookings, substitutions, only for injury stoppages.

so in todays laois fermanagh game the ref indicates 2 mins injury time...quite rightly he plays 3 mins and 26 secs..why?...the laois goalkeeper wasting time, and the time he took to issue a black card..so how does this square with eddie kinsella's actions last sunday?..hardly any of his 2 mins was played yet he blew the whistle on 2 mins and 17 secs..mickey harte had every right to be annoyed, and so then what rule are we operating under...the rule that coldrick used today or the rule that kinsella operated last week

Its worse than that though mayotyroneman, I remember 3 years ago the Dubs brought their goalkeeper up to hit a free in injury time - the referee gave them a score for it and at the end of the game the GAA president gave them a trophy for it! Yet when Mickey Harte brought his keeper up to hit a free last Sunday the referee didn't even give them a score!! It is clear to me that everyone is against Tyrone and it should be investigated.
Either that or, even though the situations have some similarities, they also have some crucial differences. Like for example time-wasting in Laois during injury time which the referee is perfectly correct to add on additional time for, but no time-wasting in Clones? To answer your question, last weeks referee was perfectly correct in when he blew the final whistle and, from your description, this weeks ref was also. Well done to both these amateur men for performing their task so well.

Two minutes in the Sligo game ruined by the most whistle happy ref i have seen in a while. Matches have to stop for injuries and incidents. It is as simple as that.

Imagine the scenario where Morgan comes up takes a minute to take a free and kicks it over to win a game, would they be moaning about the ref not adding on time then?
There is no added time for ball out of play where there is no injuries. It's called injury time not stoppage time. Anyway Morgan is dodgy from that side of the pitch because he has to direct the ball instead of kicking straight under it. Tyrone should know that and should have gone with the forward to kick it over. Tyrone have had the rub of the green more than often enough Monaghan were the better team and should have won by more.

I think referees are very inconsistent As regards timekeeping it should be taken out of the refs hand. If I was a referee , I'd have no problem adding on a minute or two if I thought a team were wasting time. You are right to point out the differences in last Sundays game and last nights game. Also think last years AI hurling final ::::the drawn game, well I for one thought Cork had the game won when the scored that point to lead in injury time, yet the ref gave Clare, once they had possession a chance to equalise which they did. Now compare the action of the ref that day comparing to last Sunday ::: Tyrone v Monaghan. In fairness Tyrone were lucky to be a point behind at that stage as Monaghan should have been out of sight

The referee added on the time yesterday for the black card - now there is no reason to do this unless you believe the black card was itself a deliberate attempt to waste time, which it was. There are a lot of rules that could be changed in the GAA, time lost through yellow/black/red are one of them - why not just write down the number and show the card, calling the lad over writing his name (and if he has a difficult name to spell it even takes longer) and then showing him the card. If you are in injury time, taking a black card is a big use of time.

How on gods earth was there only 2 minutes added time in both games today? The Meath Kildare game there should have been at least 5 minutes added time and same with Dublin Wexford , why oh why won't they take the time keeping off the ref? Like 6 subs on each team come on then there's injuries during the game then there can be a flare up with players that stops play, Something really needs to be done about this cause it a joke.

Agree with you 100% clondalkin. 2 mintes seemes to be the standard with 3 being added on only if WW3 breaks out, 6 players are dead & bomb debris has to be removed from the pitch.

Time is not supposed to be added on for substitutions.

Even without subs coming on there was still should have been way more than two minutes added time.
