Choke tackle, What's it all about?

So Tyrone invented it and Donegal copied it. But are you sure it was (is) per planned and also coached ?? Do you not think that type of play has been going on for a long long time. I think myself a lot of players bring it on theirselves as the try to run through two/three opposing players, in other words carry the ball into the defensive or take too much out of the ball. Anyway I'm glad you cleared Donegal of inventing the so called CHOKE tackle. What better crowd to blame than Tyrone. Especially when it comes from a Derry man.

Pity it had not been around the time P Spillane was playing and he would have done less running through backs. How many times have you saw MMurphy surrounded by three /four players when he wins possession :: the only way they can mark him as man to man he would give a lot of fullbacks the runabout. No , I would not call It a choke tackle but again Donegal will get the blame.
I know fine myself Spillane or O Roarke for that matter can't wait for Kerry /Dublin or Cork to get on the Sunday game. Then we will be told this is how you play ,this is great entertainment and it might be the most one sided game ever

Ah come on we will get the blame ! How old are you ? Your post wins this weeks chip on me shoulder sponsored by McCann , for what its worth nobodies blaming you or did you not read the other posts , practically everyone has admitted there own team does it , no story .

dont see anything wrong with standing around the player with your arms out

No dispute with that but thats NOT a choke tackle........

This is.....

.......the attacking player is held up in a hug allowing time for the swarm defence to come into play.

Totally illegal, that is what people are complaining about nothing to do with what you describe.

Spillane at times is right. My post was an attempt to explain the tackle and its application .I don't care one way or the other who invented or perfected it but for many it leads to a very unattractive football and J Mc Guinness has stated repeatedly he doesn't care about its critics as long as he wins games. Whatever floats your boat!

The difficulty with this choke tackle thing is that very often a player with the ball will run into a defending player, even jump into a player. It is 6 of one and half a dozen of the other if u asked me. The only way u can stop this is to only allow 10 people inside your own 45 as a rule. Or something like it.

Thanks for the prize. When do I get it ,???

But at times could the player with the ball be charging ?? You just don't stand back and let a player waltz through. That's what happened in the Div I final.

Is this new? Anyone who saw Meath play in the 80s not the 90s team but the 80s one would often see 3/4 Meath playersaround forward sso he couldn't pass ball or take shot, the most likely outcome was a free out for over carrying. Nothing new and tbh is a art form in itself. Lot more wrong with some tactics than this.

Id say the most likely outcome was concussion for said player if it was them boys in the 80s ;)

Looking at the Internet and an article about the Choke tackle in Rugby, the writer states it is Legal but it takes skill to execute. That is to properly do it. Now that was wrote in around 2010 and I think he more or less said Ireland invented it. Now that's Rugby.
I think the Meath poster has it right , I saw that Meath team playing , hard hitting and when on the ball you would not get much time to make up your mind. Meath put in all sort of tackles but I don't think they bit any player That is worse than any choke tackle.
Most players when in possession and breaking from midfield tend to try and break the tackle and try and jump through the opposing player( I was going to say defender but in Donegals case it could be M M or Colm Mc they would be trying to get through) Now all you people here if one of your defenders let an opposing player through without very little resistance I know fine well ye would be putting it down to BAD DEFENDING You can look at the goal Dublin got in 2011 AI when K McM skips around Declan o Sullivan.
Whatever about the choke tackle and Donegal I think it's our set up , 3 half back lines of four , one around the 50 mt line ,another just a little behind and the last Line around the 14 mt line I think it will test a lot of teams. Get a few points or a goal on the break and that should do us Won't be pretty watching but easier to take than getting hammered. Keep up the Good work JIM
