Cork V Waterford

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

As I just posted on the attendances thread - the official attendance of 16,025 Ardan O'Coinnean biggest stand was fairly full. The camera was on this side of the field so you wouldn't see it much on TV. In fairness while it was a smaller Cork crowd than usual there was still 10 / 12k Cork fans there. Not bad for a first round.

I definitely though it would make sense to have the replay as a double header with Tipp and Limerick. I know they have an intermediate game as a curtain raiser but maybe that could have thrown in earlier. Maybe club fixtures are the obstacle...

Hard to believe that last free on Nash wasn't looked at by the Sunday Game last night wtf is going on it was a massive call to get Cork out of trouble and not one replay or word about it very poor stuff from rte.

Waterford shot themselves in the foot with some of there wides. But that can be ironed out, and with players to come back from injury they are in a good place. An all Ireland there in the next 3 years perhaps

I dont think its rte clondlakin its a different perspective on analysing the two sports
im a big supporter of both codes
but you only have to open a newspaper today and you see articles on the football talking about choke tackles and cynical fouls
yet we had a clear incident in yesterdays wateford v cork match where the waterford forward was holding the hurl of cork player to slow the game down towards the end, also another massive talking point that was not discussed after the match
on the highlights programme or in any newspaper today was the fact that a waterford player threw the hurl towards the attacking cork player the rule states its a yellow card to throw the hurl, the waterford player in question was already on a yellow card at the time
so should have recieved his marching orders, thus reduceing them to 14 players for the remainder of the game.
refs are getting all slated over the issue of black cards in football for awarding or not awarding yet this ref gets not even a mention

To be fair, Duignan did say that in real time during the match and there were an awful lot of good things about the game to discuss afterwards before getting to the bad elements. If you take the example of yesterday's football game in Celtic Park, the failure to give Bradley a black card was one of the few talking points of the first half (along with maybe Holly's point and McBrearty's miss etc.) so you could see why it would be discussed. However, I'd agree there is a degree of omerta when it comes to discussing referee's performance or any real deficiencies in a hurling game that could reasonably be addressed. Moran was lucky to stay on the field yesterday and it did merit at least a mention.

On your other point about how the replay should be part of a double header next weekend, that makes far too much common sense and not enough economic sense for the GAA to go for it.

Spot on Kurt. That IMO is the reason hurling moves on from allot of these incidents. whether that is a good thing or not is debatable but the fact is there was so many talking points most of them positive from the hurling yesterday that to focus on a few negatives would be unfair to the teams involved. Also the fact that it was a draw meant any everyone went home happy. Gleesons foul on Nash was silly more than cynical. Waterford paid a high price for it despite his overall contribution.

kurt angle

yeah duignan said it and that was it. their was a panel in the studio after the match and a panel in the studio that night
plenty of time to discuss one of the games big decisions.
Im not buying their were too many positives to discuss a major decision that could have changed the game dramatically
as it came at a time when cork were full of momentum and waterford were struggling
surely a balance has to be struck when analysing a match.
ignoring anything negative in hurling seems to be the only way to deal with it.
on the double header that would more then likely make more economical sense as they would not have to pay the cost of opening the ground twice and employing staff twice they would also attract more people to a double header as it would give them two big games
as you seen yesterday the crowd was small for cork v waterford on its own.

thats burying your head in the sand talk in all honesty
as if the waterford man was sent off at that time with the momentum cork had they possibly would have won the game
its a major talking point in the match and to not discuss it shows no balance at all
its not only rte its not in newspapers either
considering you had two shows on rte and neither discussed it was poor form though

Maybe you should start a 'hurling negative points' blog hill. You seem to be pretty obsessed about it anyway.

I would not like to see this negative analysis creep into hurling as well. Yesterday was a fine game played in a great spirit with a fair outcome at the end. The focus should be on the performance of Waterford, the resilience of Cork and the appearance of some new stars, Alan Cadogan and Austin Gleeson to name two.

I didn't think Waterford had a performance like that in them and even looking at the team sheet beforehand I was surprised to see so many names I didn't recognize. To their credit, they started brilliantly and kept up that level of performance until the 50th or the 55th minute. At that stage, they went to sleep. A lot of players got cramp. In fairness though, they could have rolled over but hung on well for the draw. This Austin Gleeson chap looks made for these days in Thurles. I bet he becomes a regular there over the next 10 years.

Cork are a good side but I always felt reaching an All-Ireland Final last year flattered them. Their true ranking is probably somewhere floating between the top of Division 1B and the bottom of 1A. They need a couple of forwards if they are to get back challenging for an All-Ireland again. Cian McCarthy and Pa Cronin will be lucky to start the next day while Conor Lehane and Seamus Harnedy need more consistency.

I would've said had the replay being next week then that would have suited Cork more. But the extra week will make a big difference to Waterford. They will feel they left it behind them but if they can overcome that initial feeling of throwing it away, then it'll be another very close game. A lot of these draw games have an element of smash and grab about them however I don't think that's the case here. These are two very evenly matched teams.

I often think that attendances are understated, definitely think there were more than 10,000 there yesterday.
I also think that the replay should be held next Sunday after the Limerick Tipp game. I don't think a 6pm throw in on a Sunday evening would inconvenience anybody too much as nobody would have a huge journey home. It would be fair to move the intermediate game before it, and they couldn't change the time for he limerick Tipp game as its on telly. Tickets have already been sold for that game, so they could have kept the price as it is and put on the cork Waterford game after it. Would bring a right good crowd to thurles with 4 Munster counties involved.

It was'nt massive, the back slide tackled Nash,it was one of the more obvious frees given yesterday,In saying that Im surprised Gavin gave it,shocking display on his behalf yesterday.

Cork co championship starts next weekend.

Can't have Cork and Waterford in Thurles because tickets were already on sale before this game was played is the first reason and Tipp V Limerick could have anything from 15k to 35k at the game going for closer to 35k or more if Limerick crowd travel, the second terrece tickets have now gone on sale which is a good indication there will be big crowd

You think Harnedy should be more consistent!!,dear god what games are you watching,he was injured during the league and was still more consistent than any other player,he was injured yesterday and should not have started that was clear from watching him.

Realtmo most lads i know are not travelling, we generally bring one of the best away supports to Thurles, with Cork we would go there in huge numbers. I fancy 23-24k with only 7-8k from Limerick, if it is a nice day we might break the 10k barrier.. I geniunely believe people don't have the money to travel.

Harnedy had a good debut season and deserved an AllStar however he had a habit of drifting in and out of games. Even in the All-Ireland Finals, he'd get a good score but might fail to win possession the next time the ball went near him. It was the same performance from him yesterday. The only top class forward Cork have that can be relied upon is Pat Horgan. Cadogan looked good yesterday and there's a real fire about him.
