What's happened to Declan O Sullivan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Declan O Sullivan in the mid to late 00's for me was the best footballer in Ireland he had it all pace ,power ,great scorer ,great link up play , great at skinning his marker and everything else but the last 5 years he's been nowhere near the player he was and he's only gone 30 this season, can someone please explain what happened to my favourite footballer of the 00's???

Ya between himself and Alan Brogan were always my favourite players during the 00's but have no idea what's happened. I still think he's a solid forward and we see sparks of his brilliance every now and again, but ya a bit of the heights he reached 5-7 years ago. Ya never know with his rest maybe he'll get some of the hunger back and with Gooch out of the picture this season maybe he'll step up as the best forward in the side. As a player myself with low confidence, I always played better when we were missing our better players, may sound strange to some people but that's what happened. Gooch casts a long shadow, and perhaps O'Sullivan hasn't been rising to the occasion as often anymore because Gooch et al have in his stead. And I know Gooch was there when he was playing well, but he hit a good run of form and was also captain, both can really boost the performance of low confidence player.

In all seriousness though an awesome footballer on his day. Wayneo I have to say I'm surprised anyone would have Darren above Declan.

Darren is a fine footballer too but not near Declan imo.

Hard to know, he's been on the go a long time now so maybe a bit of physical and mental fatigue. Personally I'd like to see him consistently playing in the full forward line with James o Donoghue this year.

And in regards to who is better between Declan and Darran, there really is no comparison. Darran is a very good player, and his speed is a very important weapon for Kerry. But in terms of footballing skills, Declan is streets ahead of him. We were very fortunate to have Declan and Gooch on the same team in their prime for all those years.

Your view is wrong Waynol , Darren is a great player with great pace but is nowhere near Declan O Sullivan as a footballer, I consider the Gooch as the GOAT but in the 00's O Sullivan was the better player.

Ok so I'm better than Messi that's my view today. Waynol you've had Jason Whelan in your starting 15 now your telling us that Darren O Sullivan is better than Declan when we all know he's nowhere near him as a footballer.

Stylish and elegant footballer. My favourite Kerry player of that era.Got a bit of a slating from some quarters for letting Kevin Mc easily pass him for Dublins goal in 2011 final.Id rather him than the Gooch.

wayno, sorry man but no way. Darren is a decent player but relied on pace, was never that natural a footballer and has started more games on the bench than the pitch down the years.
Declan is different gravy altogether. Declan was next to the Gooch only in the 00's
Awesome
I wouldnt be writing him off yet CD

For all the talk about Kerry being past it, come August there is a chance they could field a forward unit of Sheehan, Walsh, Declan, JOD, Donaghy and Darren
Not too shabby!

It's not the forwards letting down Kerry

Wayno1 its my view that im 6ft 7 , however Im actually 5ft 11 , am I wrong
Same applies in sport , you can have a view that EOG is the greatest forward of all time , however the facts may point to the opposite , everyone is entitled to their view , their just not entitled to that view being automatically respected or valued , its not democracy its sport .

Comparing Darren O Sullivan to Declan O Sullivan is laughable.
Darren has produced ONLY one solid full season for Kerry and that was in 2011 I think.
Declan has had a decade of being the fulcrum for kerry.

Over the last few years he has gone back intercounty performance wise with regards pace.
I think 2011 took a lot out of him with regards to losing the final to Dublin. Prob should have left the final after that Ger brennan tackle.
2012 kind of passed him by which finished up in prob his worst ever performance in a Kerry jersey against Donegal.
2013 he showed flashes of his bis best in at full forward and only afterwards found out he played against Dublin dying with the flu....not the best team to be playing against not feeling 100%

Currently he is playing class football with the club so I expect Declan O Sullivan to be at the top of his game this year (as possibly could be his swan song year)

If he was dying with the flu he shouldn't have been playing

Silly on his part and reflects quite poorly on management also

Kerry just don't have the depth to replace these lads you see...
