Sky Sports' GAA - I love it!!

I take it sky have the replay. If so will they show clips of the first game to promote it and try and get more viewers for the second game.

427K certainly are great figures for Gaa on Sky considering it's their first year showing it and it was a great game of Hurling aswell which will do the sport no harm at all. But yes you have to put it in perspective, there was no Super Sunday because of internationals and Sky moved it to SS1 so it got great figures but the replay will be going head to head with Arsenal v Spurs so they won't get near 427K the next day unfortunately.

well aware of stiff competition the football is going to face but still excellent figures considering viewers could watch any channel and chose to watch hurling..great exposure overall anyway

"but it does show that there is a market in the UK but I think sky will start to put pressure on the GAA to change times and days etc to try and get good enough viewing figures to make it financially viable for them , rugby league gets it biggest viewing figures on a monday night"

At the start of the year all the naysayers were saying that there was no market (not saying you were one), now the concern is that there is a market and this will become even bigger than the game in Ireland. Perhaps SKY would use its influence with the Premiership to ensure that the big games are played at noon on Sundays so as to leave the afternoon slot free for the GAA!

The figures were great, making excuses saying it was only because of etc etc is just trying to find issues. Sure the national broadcaster shifted the final from RTE 2 to 1 to accommodate a soccerball game against the mighty georgians so if our own broadcaster doesn't value it enough to not move it around why should sky be criticized for moving the channels around whatever the rationale, plus they do some decent analysis rather than 3 oul fellas who look like they've been on the lash all night and turfed into shirts and ties 2 mins before throw in.

Ah but they needed to switch it to RTE1 because they were showing 'The Last Airbender', an all time classic it has to be said and as an added bonus it also meant that a lot of people, myself included couldn't watch the game in HD because I don't have saorview, thanks RTE.

Up til now, all Sky's viewing figures haven't included their HD customers (of which I'm one). Do these figures include HD viewership? Wouldn't it be amazing (& possibly ironic) if bus loads of British people were coming to Dublin or Thurles to see OUR GAMES instead of the other way around?!?!

well they were hd viewers in the uk keeper so i imagine there quite different..most of the figures reported have been from ireland which favours the anti-sky deal side with lower figures due to smaller population

how do they calculate viewing figures. if someone is flicking channels and happens across the hurling and stays with it for 5 mins, then switches again, does that get included in the viewing figures. Where are these viewing figures available. is there a breakdown available.

Good viewing figures on sky for the hurling final. Great to see. I can only imagine the viewing figures will grow year on year over there.

Not surprised hurling is more popular in the uk as it's indeed the more entertaining sport. I can definitely see sky pushing to renew the deal in 2 years and they'll probably pay even more next time. Good for the GAA, good for people in the UK and good for the likes of me who don't want to watch a circus instead of real analysis all the time!

Don't get me wrong RTE is good for a laugh but sometimes I like a bit of serious coverage :)

yes.. great until sky broker a new deal in a few years time that means they get exclusive coverage of more and more games. and we all have to sign up and pay through the nose.

That seems harsh on RTE's hurling coverage. I mean, RTE's football analysis has unfortunately turned into a bit of a circus, I can understand people's appreciation for an alternative in that regard, no argument there. But RTE's hurling analysis is in the main pretty good, and much better than what I've seen elsewhere.

Agreed the hurling on RTE is much better and nearly always positive coverage for it. Got sick of RTE's negative coverage of football. Still though I'm sick of ger and his never ending clichés!

And of Sky get another deal and more games so be it. Won't affect me with my sky subscription already. RTE got the same number of games this year as they always do and many matches weren't even televised so Sky could increase their lot and RTE could still show the same. Win win for all. Most importantly however it will make RTE take the bidding seriously in future and pay a fairer price for the package.

True enough about the football coverage Jack, if an alternative approach makes RTE think twice about their own coverage, thats a good thing. Just a note on the above, while RTE got the same number of games as last year, there were less "free to air" games this year as last year(when you take account of the games TV3 had), so not completely win win for everyone.
But yeah, if the current situation means RTE up their game when it comes to GAA coverage, then that's a good thing. The Irish channels have taken the games slightly for granted in the past, maybe the latest developments have been a timely wake up call.

Anyone know how much sky deal is worth to GAA.

less than the tv3 1 offered anyway but could potentially be a lot more with the exposure involved and so on

Don't a significant proportion have sky or access to sky already? And would it really be a bad thing?
