The match on Saturday fell in between Argentina v Iran and Germany v Ghana in the World Cup. It was always going to struggle for viewers.

hill16no1man, you seem to forget that these are, to the neutral observer, dead ringer games of little consequence. I have a feeling you might have a fair bit of humble pie coming your way come September though...

How you can possibly come to that conclusion on the basis of three televised games is beyond me. Unless of course you have access to the figures for Sky subscribers in Ireland?

Last year nobody watched GAA on Sky, so if you're talking about viewing figures for this year then there's automatically going to be an increase in viewers. Whether or not there's new subscribers is a different matter.

It's already been established that the viewing figures don't include those who watch in HD, which is apparently more popular than the regular broadcast, so you're only getting a viewing figure that reflects a smaller base of subscribers.

Anyways, it's not always about viewing figures for Sky, it's about getting new subscribers signed up and also holding onto those who might usually ditch their Sky package during the summer months due to there being no Premiership or Heineken Cup matches on.

The viewing figures in no way reflect the number of people who may have taken out a new subscription or have renewed where they usually get rid.

I'm a Sky customer (but didn't have Movies or Sports) & I signed up to the Sports package for the next 2 months. A lot of people would've dropped their Sports package for this period especially with the World Cup on terrestrial television but many Irish customers probably were convinced to hold onto it with the GAA/Sky deal coming on board.

Why so defensive ?
You would swear I was calling your family into a courtroom
The way some are going on here.
Chill would ye it was an observation based on the fact sky have put in a huge marketing campaign to get Gaa on board and having had 32 thousand for the opening broadcast the drop to 18 thousand for the second match and 18 thousand again for their third match would show that would be their average at the moment meaning after their first broadcast they haven't gotten from their Gaa angle any significant new customers buying that package for Gaa reasons .
Plus the fact sky sports in Britain had 9 thousand viewers last weekend compared to premier sports a much smaller operation in Britain having the same for their brodcast

Seems not that many of us are bothered with subscribing to Sky Sports. Good decision by the viewers in my opinion.

its funny, nowhere in the article was there a mention of the world cup. i believe the Brazil v Chile match was on at the same time as Armagh v Monaghan. surely that was worth a mention.

The figures certainly aren't great but I'd say most people probably were watching the WC, I know I was.

Very flawed article!

The second semi-final between All-Ireland champions Dublin and Wexford attracted an average audience of 396,000, or 40 per cent of the available audience, for the first half. This fell to 257,000, or a 28 per cent share of the available audience, for the second half. Figures for that game were split in two because there was a break for Nuacht, and so, according to RTÉ, "the two halves are technically separate programmes". However, Dublin's near complete dominance of the second half surely helps explain the drop in the second-half figures.

Or maybe it was the World Cup match that started at 5pm...

Sky's right to broadcast the Armagh-Monaghan game effectively ruled out any live transmission of the Leinster hurling semi-final replay between Kilkenny and Galway. The drawn game, shown by RTÉ the previous Sunday, attracted an average viewership of 329,000.

Why? Does 'effectively' mean they were not allowed to? Or they chose not to?

A draw was not part of the "sky deal" so RTE were not allowed show it live.

-Imperfections or flaws in the deal at such an early stage, - I love it.

RTE could have shown the Kilkenny/Galway replay, just not at the same time Sky were showing the football. The deal prohibits the two channels going up against each other. RTE were happy to show the game at 2:30 (they couldn't fit it into the schedule elsewhere due to their World Cup and Horse Racing coverage) but the competing counties preferred a 7:00pm throw in, so the game wasn't televised.

RTE were happy to show the game but the counties involved wouldn't agree to an afternoon start.

Can't please everyone.
