In fairness, there are irish surnames that on first viewing I have struggled to pronounce correctly, and I doubt Im the only one. Then you are told or her it pronounced and that is fine - they dont have that luxury. The only thing I dont like about this is, why did they have to wait until they were showing some games before they were able to report results? They could have reported provincial winners, AI semi finals and finals. Maybe I am being too picky here. They are reporting them now and it is a step in the right direction. I gotta be honest, I really couldn't care about production quality, pre or post match analysis, etc. I just care about the game. If I can see the games, then I'm happy, I've played dual long enough to be able to forge an opinion on the games myself so I really don't care if it's on RTÉ, Sky or TG4(although the fact that TG4 are there live, on the sidelines adds to the experience in my opinion). In regards to the Sky highlights. I guess it's something, I'm just delighted he got the pronounciation of the names right, looking forward to see how they manage with Fiontán Ó Curraoin, that'll be the acid test ~PHS Pope_has_spoken (Dublin) - Posts: 138 - 19/05/2014 10:43:34 1589796 Link 0 |
Are folk really that insecure that they think that coverage from local broadcasters is always going to half arsed and not to the standards of some multinational. Lets take it at face value and try not to get sucked in by the hype and spin. RoverTin (Derry) - Posts: 226 - 19/05/2014 10:46:04 1589797 Link 0 |
There is definitely a sense of pride watching that highlight package on Sky Sports News, hearing the passion and roar of the crowd when Benny Coulter scores that point, and knowing that it is being watched by a sizable audience throughout the UK. IMO its great our games are being showcased in this way. So what if they get names wrong or dont fully understand the rules or scoring, they will learn. I'm sure they have covered sports before and faced similar problems but they learn. benjyyy (Donegal) - Posts: 1422 - 19/05/2014 11:07:50 1589821 Link 0 |

Benjyyy-the majority of Irish people don't have Sky tv. That's what my statement is based on pdempsey (Mayo) - Posts: 1313 - 19/05/2014 11:35:02 1589850 Link 0 |

In the report from the Carlow V Westmeath hurling match last night Derek McNicholas was named as David. He's one of Westmeath's best-known hurlers for years & RTE can't even get that right. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 19/05/2014 11:58:20 1589873 Link 0 |
I must say from the point of view of somebody that lives in the UK the sky deal is fantastic. The GAA club beside me on Peckham park has kids from African and British families playing Gaelic football. Anything that shows off hurling and football to the world and broaden it's appeal can only be good. Daith (Kildare) - Posts: 1171 - 19/05/2014 11:58:40 1589874 Link 0 |
jpcampion, that is the thing, it has become an old boys club. The same guys get every job. No one questions whether morrissey and o'hara can actually do the job well on the radio, they get appointed simply because they are morrissey and o'hara. The quality suffers. Twice last night, Westmeath were referred to as Meath by both Kevin Mc Stay, and Ciaran Whelan, so it isn't just sky making mistakes. PK57 (Louth) - Posts: 1654 - 19/05/2014 12:20:29 1589894 Link 0 |
I think brolly is the root cause jimbo. His comments annoy o'rourke and he counters them with a valid observation (which I dont blame him for), and then it becomes about that point with brolly having tinsisting on another retort, and that being another longwinded answer. The thing with mayo was a perfect example. It was supposed to be a quick run through of the challengers before the match. I have no issue with brolly having that opinion, but there is a time and a place. Lyster had to cut him off to change the subject and then there was no time to go through the rest of the teams. It ended up being a bit of a disaster with the actual point of the piece long since lost. I think o'rourke would be fine without brolly because his part is reactionary, it is always brolly who drags it off course. TheMaster (Mayo) - Posts: 16187 - 19/05/2014 12:24:04 1589897 Link 0 |

OK ,lets put this into prospective ,there was a survey in yesterdays Independent which showed what Irish sports fans watched over a weekend on TV , it was done on the weekend of the English grand national ,English Grand National , Munster V Toulouse , West Ham V Liverpool and Leinster V Toulon all came before Dublin V Tyrone (and this was free to air) ,The reason Sky are putting on GAA is to fill a poor summer schedule and they will not be putting in huge resources into it as most British viewers will have no interest in watching it .Next season they have the pro 12 and they will put alot of resources into that because it has the potential to get a big viwership in the UK . tinrylandman (Carlow) - Posts: 387 - 19/05/2014 12:25:35 1589901 Link 0 |
