Sky Sports' GAA - I love it!!

In fairness, there are irish surnames that on first viewing I have struggled to pronounce correctly, and I doubt Im the only one. Then you are told or her it pronounced and that is fine - they dont have that luxury. The only thing I dont like about this is, why did they have to wait until they were showing some games before they were able to report results? They could have reported provincial winners, AI semi finals and finals. Maybe I am being too picky here. They are reporting them now and it is a step in the right direction.

RTE done fine with yesterday's coverage of the big game, no complaints there, as far as analysis goes, I rarely watch that anyway. I'm talking more about the evening sunday game, as a Gaa gan I like to see good coverage of all games, instead they extensively reviewed the game that we already saw on tele, what's the sense in that?

I gotta be honest, I really couldn't care about production quality, pre or post match analysis, etc. I just care about the game. If I can see the games, then I'm happy, I've played dual long enough to be able to forge an opinion on the games myself so I really don't care if it's on RTÉ, Sky or TG4(although the fact that TG4 are there live, on the sidelines adds to the experience in my opinion). In regards to the Sky highlights. I guess it's something, I'm just delighted he got the pronounciation of the names right, looking forward to see how they manage with Fiontán Ó Curraoin, that'll be the acid test ~PHS

Are folk really that insecure that they think that coverage from local broadcasters is always going to half arsed and not to the standards of some multinational. Lets take it at face value and try not to get sucked in by the hype and spin.
Sky haven't even covered a game and all of sudden they are going to do wonders for promotion. Not a bit wrong with the coverage yesterday. What are Sky going to a add that would add to the experience. Maybe someone how wonderful and friendly all those from the counties playing are. That always works a treat.

There is definitely a sense of pride watching that highlight package on Sky Sports News, hearing the passion and roar of the crowd when Benny Coulter scores that point, and knowing that it is being watched by a sizable audience throughout the UK. IMO its great our games are being showcased in this way. So what if they get names wrong or dont fully understand the rules or scoring, they will learn. I'm sure they have covered sports before and faced similar problems but they learn.

BBCs coverage of Tyrone v Down looked good yesterday. McConville's knowledge of the game is excellent. I just don't understand how people get "excited" by poor coverage of our game by Sky. I won't be watching sky, along with the vast majority of Irish people.

Whether or not you speak for the "majority of Irish people", I'll be watching.

Never mind sky mistakes.
I listened to the last ten minutes of the football on radio one yesterday. Marty Morrissey was impossible to follow. "Down play the ball out of defense up the field to Stephen O'Neill". I hadn't a clue what was going on. At least 3 times mixed up the names of the 2 teams playing. Radio commentators are supposed to make it possible to visualise what you are hearing. The problem was that Eamonn O'Hara was sitting beside him and does not correct him. I suppose its hard to get a word in wit Marty anyway.

Most people have Sky or other satellite platforms and large amount of them have sky sports so still will be able to watch the games...

In the report from the Carlow V Westmeath hurling match last night Derek McNicholas was named as David. He's one of Westmeath's best-known hurlers for years & RTE can't even get that right.

I must say from the point of view of somebody that lives in the UK the sky deal is fantastic. The GAA club beside me on Peckham park has kids from African and British families playing Gaelic football. Anything that shows off hurling and football to the world and broaden it's appeal can only be good.

I also enjoy the over the top approach from Jim Whyte on sky. RTE has been shown up consistently by the BBC in terms of intelligent coverage, and I have little sympathy for them.

On the other hand I realise it's ok for me as I already have sky and that's not possible for everybody.

jpcampion, that is the thing, it has become an old boys club. The same guys get every job. No one questions whether morrissey and o'hara can actually do the job well on the radio, they get appointed simply because they are morrissey and o'hara. The quality suffers.

I actually thought tomas o'se was the best of the 3 panelists on rte, he talked on the subjects without prejudice and got his views across well and without taking all day about it. Then brolly came in and it just became a pain. It became about mayo, then about sean cavanagh, you are just thinking, ah give us a break... These guys should have to do their job correctly first and foremost. Brolly should save those long-winded views for his column in the paper, you only get a few minutes when the game is on.

I think you're gone way over the top with that post, insecurity doesn't come into this so we can put that one to bed, obviously RTE do a good job occasionally but their coverage is almost equally half assed and they don't advertise the games very well either.

Now I'm not saying that Sky are going to do wonders for the Gaa (not sure anybody has said that), certainly not yet anyway because they are very much the junior partner when it comes to broadcasting the Gaa at the minute. But nobody can deny that Sky have the potential to commit far more time, effort and money to the Gaa than RTE if this venture proves to be a profitable one.

RTE need a clear out

Brolly / O'Rourke... they are just interested in point scoring and hacking at each other comments

RTE's production is tired, it needs refreshing...

These fellas have been there too long and really they are just backing up old points they've made rather than adding something new

It's time for a clear out...

Twice last night, Westmeath were referred to as Meath by both Kevin Mc Stay, and Ciaran Whelan, so it isn't just sky making mistakes.

I think brolly is the root cause jimbo. His comments annoy o'rourke and he counters them with a valid observation (which I dont blame him for), and then it becomes about that point with brolly having tinsisting on another retort, and that being another longwinded answer. The thing with mayo was a perfect example. It was supposed to be a quick run through of the challengers before the match. I have no issue with brolly having that opinion, but there is a time and a place. Lyster had to cut him off to change the subject and then there was no time to go through the rest of the teams. It ended up being a bit of a disaster with the actual point of the piece long since lost. I think o'rourke would be fine without brolly because his part is reactionary, it is always brolly who drags it off course.

Pope has spoken
I said the very same thing my self on another thread and I agree with 100%. People watch the games and make up ye'r own minds ye don't need joe brolly or sky to do that.

OK ,lets put this into prospective ,there was a survey in yesterdays Independent which showed what Irish sports fans watched over a weekend on TV , it was done on the weekend of the English grand national ,English Grand National , Munster V Toulouse , West Ham V Liverpool and Leinster V Toulon all came before Dublin V Tyrone (and this was free to air) ,The reason Sky are putting on GAA is to fill a poor summer schedule and they will not be putting in huge resources into it as most British viewers will have no interest in watching it .Next season they have the pro 12 and they will put alot of resources into that because it has the potential to get a big viwership in the UK .
