The plot thickens.

Fishermantom, i saw the Limerick Minor team in Croker last year against Galway, some fine hurlers, thought they were very unlucky that day. Wouldnt be surprised to see a Limerick v Kilkenny minor final in September if the draw keeps them apart.

I haven't seen the team play this year and I am not au fait with how the County Board works.

I am just gutted that 6 week before championship this explodes. I'm following Limerick hurling for 32 years now. At times I cannot imagine living in a county more divided or not being able to do simple things like deciding what style we want to play. We only seem to do well temporarily on the back of a crisis - eg 2007 after the debacle in Ennis in 2006, or 2011 when we simply could not do worse than 2010.

We have now had a number of managers who have won all-Ireland's elsewhere and they join us and it is the opposite of synergy. We fall into the same traps over & over again. Player meetings, managers moved on, division at County Board level.

Please just give us people now with vision to look down the road ten years and plan. Otherwise we are at nothing - again.

Where is the crisis here?

Limerick are Munster Champions unlike dethroned and a 2013 top 4 outfit.

Limerick are still a good side and last year been in Div 2 made no odds to them.

Ahsure
Twas you yourself brought Galway into this debate by trying to put the boot in with a pithy little comment when it should have been none of your business to do so. Anyway the strength of your support for your underage sides was well illustrated when we played ye in the 2002 All Ireland Under 21 final. There was 20,000 at the game and Martin Brehony lambasted the lack of support for Galway in his Irish Independent column the following day saying his home county's support was so poor they only made up 1 in 20 of the attendance. Incidentally when Limerick played Wexford the previous the attendance was over 34,00. Enough said

As an outsider, looking in for the last 20 years at Limerick hurling, there seems to be an unreal amount of politics and short-term thinking. Since Eamonn Cregan finished in 2002 you have had:

Dave Keane 2003 - had won 3 under-21 All Irelands in a row with Limerick. 1 season in charge
Pad Joe Whelehan 2004, 2005 - I believe 10 county club titles with 4 different clubs, 4 Leinsters, 2 All-Irelands, 3 All-Ireland minor titles in a row with Offaly, 2 Leinster Senior titles with Offaly, 1 Leinster u21. 2 seasons in charge
Joe McKenna 2006 - Limerick hurling legend but perhaps not a huge coaching pedigree. Resigned halfway through first season
Richie Bennis 2007, 2008 - Limerick hurling legend, brought the team to the All-Ireland final in 2007. 2 seasons in charge
Justin McCarthy 2009, 2010 - 2 All Irelands, 3 National Leagues, 7 provincial titles, 1 Munster club. Given the job of retiring several popular players who were not good enough, he was unpopular and the players went on strike. 2 seasons in charge
Donal O'Grady 2011 - 1 All Ireland title, 1 Munster title. 1 season in charge
John Allen 2012, 2013 - 3 Munster titles, 1 All-Ireland. 2 seasons in charge

It just unfortunately seems to be the ultimate poisoned chalice. Whether former Limerick greats, or outside managers with several All-Irelands between them the result is the same. Between the players and the county board, no one can hack the politics that goes on down there. Some lads are pushed, some leave themselves. I'd say Whelehan, Bennis, McKenna, McCarthy, and now O'Grady are sorry they ever went into the place. It's v sad because as someone said before, hurling needs Limerick.
