Mayo - Where to from here?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think at this stage it is obvious that horan is not tactically aware enough for this level. Fine footballers but everytime theyre in a position to win a big game some strange call from the line seems to be the main talking point when they end up losing these matches. The most worrying one being in last years AI final.

A child could have spotted that o'gara was gone and yet he wasted probably their best player on minding him???

No arrogance here John. Most of us from Mayo just ignore the arrogant fella with the verbal diahorea. You should do the same.

Actually I would regard that post as very arrogant. I agree with the roscommon poster, many mayo fans state things which are downright arrogant. Dismissing roscommon and indeed all of connacht, for example. Another is this idea that we should have won sam maguire last year - or arguing blind that bringing on one player, who let's face it wasnt good enough to start, would have made such a huge difference, without any proof in the world, and then taking the hump when someone actually has the cheek to question that logic. Now that is arrogant, wouldnt you agree?

Well you should not base what a county feels or think's based on an internet forum. Mayo fans I know would not be taking Connacht for granted any year, let alone this one. There seems to be a very mis-guided view out there that Mayo steamroll their way through Connacht year on year which is totally false. Last year we did but shoe me another year we had it that easy?

I except Roscommon to be very difficult to beat this year in the Hyde and I would take a one point win right now. Galway also cant be as bad can they? Either way they won't be like that for too long.

Mayo keep getting told they are easy runners through Connacht yet we don't hear much from leinster one horse race or Munsters two horses. Ulster fair enough, that's a minefield and I can see why posters there want the whole thing opened up.

Mayo didn't win the All Ireland because they weren't good enough, they are lacking scoring forwards. The league game in Croke Park against a 14 man Dublin team did little to inspire confidence they have the tools to lift Sam this year. Again, my view on Mayo is they are a good solid side, who are two to three forwards short of a winning team.

Forget Corks collapse the weekend, with a relatively new looking team, a blend of youth and experience; the Cork team seem to be on an upward curve at the moment. If not this year, then next year Cork will be a serious team. Look at their forwards....O'Neill is a fantastic addition to the squad, and that guy deserves a break as he has been so unlucky with injuries. Goulding/Kerrigan still have it and they have one or two players to come back. They are well in contention to surprise a few people this year. I just think Mayo don't have forwards with the class of Cork, Kerry and Tyrone to trouble Dublin this year.

So.....Mayo will be functional, fit and in with a shout. But don't think they have the ammunition up top for championship honours. Surprised they didn't get some of those Minors from last year on the pitch during the league. Just the same faces as last year from what I seen of em.

Very fair assessment.

Who was the Mayo minor corner forward with the designs in his hair? He was savage every time he got the ball he'd shoot and usually score cocky and greedy as hell but a great corner forward. I can't believe he's no on the senior panel

******************

2 of that minor team had game time early on in the League. Stephen Coen and Diarmuid O'Connor. But as anyone should know the step between minor and Senior is enormous. I don't know of any Div1 minor who is playing with their Senior counterparts. This reasoning that if they're good enough they're old enough is nonsense as well. If they were good enough they would be doing it week in week out with their clubs and also shining at U21 level.

This is a common belief and it has merit. But I would say mayo werent good enough on the day as opposed to simply being not good enough. I mean they lost by a point at the end of the day - with brogan getting a goal that could have dropped over the bar as easily as under it. They also had 4 forwards who I would have considered starters at the time were carrying or recovering from serious injury (moran, dillon, o'connor and conroy), while another hugely influencial one was out of form - kevin mcloughlin. To lose by a point is such circumstances, would lead me to suggest that they cant be that far away. As regards the league game, on the contrary, I took a lot of heart from that game, and seen a few things that if replicated, could see us possibly beating dublin in the future.

As regards us lacking scoring forwards, I believe we were the heaviest scoring team in the league this year. There is more than one way to skin a cat as they say.

8-a.o'sheae
9-gibbons

12-feeney or Doherty/a.Gallagher
13-sweeney or Doherty/a.Gallagher
14-b.moran (an option for long ball)
15-freeman (still mayos best forward, so if moran came in still best corner available)

s.o'shea

Saddam,

Of course I'm concerned about my own county and agree we are a long way off where we would like to be right now but this thread is about Mayo.Theres no denying that ye have underachieved with this team.Do you not realise that the rest of us in Connacht were rooting for ye and want ye to win when our own counties are knocked out?

I've started to suspect recently that Division 2 may have actually been a good bit stronger than most people realised.

If that is the case, then perhaps Galway aren't as far behind than some have been suggesting.
