GAA announce SKY TV deal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

This notion that promoting games to overseas audiences is dependent on Sky TV is very dubious. Have the GAA ever bothered to clarify why they believe a deal with Sky is essential to this?

They can't even promote games to an indigenous audience. There are so many problems with the structures and technical rules of hurling and particularly football that it will take a lot more than Sky to push the game internationally.

So Padraic Duffy has come out and said that no game covered by Sky will be streamed in the UK but that he doesn't see it as a problem as nearly every pub in the UK has a pub!!! And has said that Sky was the only option available to make games available in the UK. That last statement is a bare faced lie seen as 75% of the gaa coverage in the UK this Summer will be on Premier Sports, a channel which is a third of the cost of Sky, http://www.premiersports.tv/gaa/gaa/

I'm starting to lose count the number of times the GAA have tried to justify the Sky deal by spinning this lie that they got Sky on board to make the games available in the UK. Games have been available in the UK on Premier Sports for the last number of years!!!!

However, all games that are to be shown on Sky Sports will be available to GAA supporters in the U.K and GAA Director General Padraic Duffy feels that the exiles are getting a good deal.

"Nearly every pub in Britain has Sky Sports. It will be very easy for people to access the games. I don't see that being a problem in Britain," Duffy told the Irish Post.

I dont get this
as if all games shown on sky sports will be available to gaa supporters in the u.k
then why would they have to go to the pub to watch it
will it only be available in pubs on sky sports or something?

he's saying if you don't have sky there always is the pub to o to see games. Don't be silly hill of course games wont only be available in pubs. Did you honestly think that's going to happen?

I didnt say anything ormond
I asked a question thats all so less of the trying to slate me
his quote is misleading thats what I was saying
as the whole thing about sky sports was solely for irish in britian
yet he in that quote is advocating going to the pub to watch the games
its hardly a great way of putting things either way is it now

it seems odd that the whole idea of trying to make the games more accesible to irish abroad
yet in this day and age they wont be able to watch the games online surely that wouldnt have taken much to arrange
also it states that games shown on sky sports will also be available on rtes online streaming
but they are going to charge you a pay per view to watch any of them

Just after reading that article and surely Duffys quote goes against everything he has been saying. He is implying that anyone who wants to watch the game in the UK can go to the pub. Whats the difference between that and what was already there? I have friends in London, Liverpool and Manchester who went to the pub every sunday to watch the championship games. A fella i work with was in Paris for the drawn ulster final of '08 where he watched it in a pub and another friend was working in Miami that summer who saw any championship game he wanted to in a pub.
So has the GAA really changed that much for the GAA abroad?

It's quite simple. The Sky deal is for the UK & it's exclusive. Sky already have their own online services for their customers. Many people in Britain already have Sky packages at home & if they don't most pubs have Sky Sports.

yes but sky wont have the gaa available online for customers in the uk
yet rte will have all games available online regardless of if sky are showing it on tv
but this service will only be available in ireland and they will charge you to watch it on rte online.
if rte are actually going to have rights to the games sky are showing why can they not show them
on tv for viewers in Ireland for free?
sure the viewers in the uk are being catered for with sky showing it to them it is not going to effect them
that way everybody gets to watch the match both sides of the irish sea
and wont impact on gaa people in Ireland

Advocating going to the pub isn't that big a deal(before the usual trolls come to attack me) its very easy to go to a pub etc and just watch a game and not have an alcoholic drink. I did it today for the Heineken cup semi and il do it tomorrow for the second of the semi finals.
I will agree the phrasing from GAA HQ and explanation of whats going on has been poor

they are right though. Make a profit out of something that people are willing to pay for. The GAA is still a business at the end of the day regarding television rights/coverage

This thread has become a real pain in the backside with myths peddled as reality & old questions that have been answered time after time being asked again & again.

The deal is done, it won't be undone so let's wait now & see how it works before passing judgment

I am trying to imagine my self going into a pub in Britain some where and asking them to switch over to allow me to watch a Gaelic football match, I wonder would they facilitate me, especially after explaining to them that the game was between Carlow and London.

No probs at all. Just find the nearest Irish pub and there is plenty of them over in the UK.
