GAA announce SKY TV deal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I read that sky are now going to be doing random checks of clubs around the country to make sure that subscriptions are being paid. This seems like a very eager move on their behalf. I am suspicious.

Let them snoop away.Pubs pay an absolute fortune to broadcast Sky. If a pub in London pays Sky the commercial rate , why should it bother them if that pub also forks out for Irish Sky so we can watch RTE. If the net result is that all the Irish pubs and clubs lose RTE, then the GAA will have shot themselves in the foot and those critical of the deal, back home, will have a field day.

I may be missing the point but I am speaking the truth. the facts I have given are correct unlike some posters on here.
Also I never heard the GAA talking about tapping in to hitherto uninterested punters in the UK. It was all about giving the GAA followers abroad a chance to watch GAA in their own homes.(something which they are doing at the moment anyway only for alot less money)

You have to let go of it. In all their press statements and interviews they talked about both - making the games available to Irish people overseas and using it as a development tool for the game overseas. The deal as a whole - Internet Service, 7 and Sky is far superior to that already in place. Having decent coverage of the games overseas is something everyone in the development of the game overseas has been telling Croke Park they need for years.

Páraic Ó Dufaigh, Ard Stiúrthóir
"In the negotiation of these rights, the GAA was guided by a wish to drive the promotion of Gaelic games and we believe the new rights' contracts will provide Gaelic games with their widest-ever global audience reach.

Liam Ó Néill, Uachtarán
"Making our games more widely available to Irish people abroad was a critical factor in our approach to these negotiations. We felt an obligation to them not to neglect their legitimate appeals to be able to watch live TV coverage of our games. We are also glad that this brings the quality and excitement of our games to a wider international audience.

Will there be any way of watching the matches exclusive to Sky in the USA? As far as I know, there's no way to get Sky over here. But where I'm a little confused is, the broadcast deal with the Australian channel (Channel 7) seems to make all 45 televised games available over there for free, including the 14 games Sky have exclusive rights to. How will people in Australia be able to watch those games live (and for free) on a channel other than Sky?

It's called technology marlon, a new idea that I am personally convinced is the work of the devil.

It will be the end of all of us, we're doomed, doomed I tell you!!

I'm not really sure what you're problem is, but its wearing thin.
My question wasn't loaded, I was just wondering how those 14 games are being broadcast and shown on Channel 7 in Australia, and could they (will they) be broadcast the same way in the USA? I'm only concerned with getting to see the games over here. The only way I could see that happening is if those 14 games are still being broadcast live by RTE, and shown live in Australia and also via their web player, but geo-restricted to outside Ireland and Britain. But I'd be surprised if that was the case.

Hope you all have a stomach for extreme political correctness.
Once sky get their hands on these games, it will no longer be the Dubs against the Kingdom, it will be the Dublin mens senior football team vs the Kerry mens senior football team.

Those 14 matches exclusive to Sky means exclusive in Ireland

I also get the feeling that the days of teams running out onto the pitch to the roar of their fans are coming to an end.
Cue both teams walking out side by side holding childrens hands, and as for the aul bit of harmless pre game jostling and shouldering, forget about it.

My problem, if problem it is Marlon is trying to get through the day as best I can by throwing in a bit of humour here & there.

I suspect that you have spent a bit too much time away from home where banter is part & part of everyday life. If you don't like it then HS may not be the place for you.

Your comment "I am only concerned with getting to see the games over here" is revealing in it's own way. The insularity displayed is to use your own language "wearing thin".

Once a staunch opponent of any type of "jostling";
you've certainly changed your tune a bit! ;)

Marlon, there are different aspects to the deal. Seven have the rights to show all the games in Australia and will receive the feed from whoever is the coverage station for that game in Ireland. So they will receive all RTEs and SKY's. It will be similar with the RTE Player although that would mean RTE would have to use SKY's coverage of the 14 games they have for the Internet. RTE Player will be made available worldwide for a fee.

If anyone believes SKY are in this for anything other than financial considerations and increased Irish subscriptions they are totally deluded. If Gaelic games coverage takes off SKY will seek to consolidate their position and look for a bigger market share even to the point where they would attempt to outmanoeuvre RTE and become the majority Gaelic games broadcaster in Ireland. The GAA has already shown that money does indeed motivate them and if SKY waves enough dollars bills they could become the top GAA broadcaster in Ireland with RTE taking the crumbs. SKY have the rights for the Republic's soccer matches in the UK and North and for the Champions League and they blank out RTE on satellite when they and RTE are showing the same games at the same time. Many Ulster GAA are very concerned that the only way they will get to see GAA games in the future is through SKY coverage with RTE totally blanked out.

Ulsterman,

You say money is the motivating factor in this deal but why would the GAA undervalue the potential of our games' appeal to a profit-driven TV company?

I prefaced that comment by saying the question wasn't loaded. Meaning, I was asking the question because I was only concerned with getting to see the games over here, and not trying to make a point about who's showing them, in this instance. I don't see whats insular about that.
Funny how people are using the diaspora as an excuse for this deal on one hand, then having a go at people for living away from home on the other.

I hear the first game broadcast by Sky will feature a roofless Nowlan Park with just the old frame remaining over the stand following recent storms. I suppose it could be passed off as a retractable roof Ted.
