Hurling bigger than football last year!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Maybe has something to do with teams that are not usually in the latter stages getting so far in the hurling this year?

Should sicken some anti-hurling people on here:

This underlines quite well who wants to sicken who around here...

Just poking a bit of fun at some of the holier-than-thou football types. As a GAA man, I'm all for hurling AND football throughout the land.

It is surprising but there are a few reasons anyways as some have already aluded to like the All-Ireland being replayed and the novelty of some teams getting as far as they did like Clare & Limerick. Also Kilkenny don't have huge support until the All-Ireland finals (can't blame them) so getting kocked out so early helped too.

It is only temporary though. Football is followed much more in hurling.

It was the Dubs again that brought in the money replay with Wexford , replay with Kilkenny, Galway match and Cork match :)

Afraid you're wrong yet again, Ath Cliath, though you must be well used to me correcting you by now. As you will see from this article:

http://www.independent.ie/sport/hurling/gaa-reap-rewards-of-magical-campaign-29976311.html

"The accounts do not incorporate provincial championships but take in qualifiers, All-Ireland quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final."

Seeing as Dublin only played in one game counted in these receipts, and were outnumbered 2:1 by the travelling Cork fans in their own backyard at even that one game, your claim is a bit far fetched to say the least but keep up with your works of fiction all the same.

Ye must of seen a picture of part of the stadium to come to that conclusion ,because we all know ye weren't there. But as I said before that's your business.

ohhhhh, these accounts do not incorporate the provincial championships. I'm not sure if that's such a useful or fair metric, its ignores most of the championship season

We were not outnumbered at all Keyser. 50:50.

Now, the football quarter final must have been 10:1 Dubs:Cork.

Will you be among the 400/500 to watch Cork playing Wexford and Offaly? Doubt it somehow.

Bloody stupid headline not to mention article.

What sort of a comparison is it when the provincial championships & final replay skew the results so much.

I love hurling but football draws a far bigger crowd every year as the spread of competitive counties is wider.

A few things that people seem to be missing here. Firstly, in 2013, hurling only made 100k less than football (albeit there was a replay that year as well). Secondly, It is remarkable that hurling made more than football. For one thing this is the first time that it has ever happened but also, considering how much less 'big games' there are means that it's something special. People say that hurling only has two competitive provinces, I would say the same for football. Imagine suggesting that hurling gets equal money as football for promotion?! Imagine the funding for the county boards like cavan or tyrone or indeed the Ulster council was made dependant on backing hurling?! Imagine other counties following Dublin into A grade hurling or carlow for that matter. They have shown it could be done. There is no reason why we couldn't see Armagh contest a senior hurling AI in 2035 other than the fact that the promotion of the game is not taken seriously.
