GAA mentality - Winning or having fun?

waynoI and others have been whitewashed by certain media that Tyrone were the inventors of this defensive game on their way to 3 all-Irelands, well I beg to differ as if you look at some of the scores they racked up on the way to those successes they would appear to be all out attack minded apart from one or two games. Eg 2003 hit 0.17 and 0.23 in Ulster, 1.21 in QF. 2005 they hit 2.14 in QF v Monaghan and 2.18 in SM v Dubs and 1.16 in final v Kerry, in 2008 in Ulster they hit 0.21 and 1.19 then 0.23 in AI SF and 1.15 in final. Seems more attack minded to me

Soma, are you just on here to wind people up or what?No need to goad Galway people about the Hanley incident. As I said already most teams and players do it occasionally and Hanley is not a dirty player overall.

In an ideal world, it would be both. But this is impossible. There is too much pressure now, and in order to win you have got to keep improving, leaving the amateur ethos out for the rubbish. It is now with oleary in the grave.

I hope that fair play at least lasts the distance. So far, the black card seems to be working on the balance of it.

Seanie there is no goading going on at all. The fact is Hanley, who you are right is certainly not a dirty player, acted in a woefully unsporting manner on that occasion. It was probably an act of desperation and done in a split second, he can be forgiven for all these things. However from what I hear Enda Colleran would never have stooped so low, and having watched Tomas Mannion for years I never saw him do it either, but both of them played to the maximum and held nothing back. I am just wondering what the average Galway fan thought of what Hanley done. Like I said I was not a bit surprised that a Galway man would come in and be the one to talk about honesty and decency, because it was with these qualities they won their all-Irelands. I would be surprised if a Galway man said what Hanley done was right because it is all about winning, instead thinking he is wearing the jersey of Colleran and there are responsibilities with that.

I asked MichaelO if he thought what the Tyrone minors done in 2004 was right, and though he said it was cynical he didn't say it was wrong though he couldn't remember the game. Do you remember that game, and if so do you think what they done was wrong? By the way I don't really lay any blame at the players door as they were only minors, instead I would say it was the apparent instructions from the management that should be criticised.
