Kieren McDonald.....

He was a terrific footballer.

Now TheMaster don't let it be said I didn't ever compliment Mayo on something....that point against us in the semi final.....broke my heart....but a serious score.

Special Mention.....Kevin Cassidy for THAT point against Kildare under lights.....AWESOME. Best point ever...forget Maurice Fitz!!

From the past......Keith Barr.....would decapitate you.

And although he doesn't have Tomas O'Sheas medals..........Paul Curran, best half back ever. SOLID .... and was just a super ball player.

Im gonna say it.....Graham Geraghty....super Athlete and great player.

Big Nialler from Abbeylara! I remember him playing a club championship semi-final a few years ago against Clonguish. Abbey were down by 4 points and were down to 13 men with 15 mins left. Clonguish's strategy was to close out the game by playing 3 players on the Abbey one man full forward line, Big Nialler. Long story short Abbey won by 5 points, Nialler scored 1-2 and set up another goal. Legend of a player!!

For us,had to be John 'Jigger' O'Connor. Could have been picked straight from a Rolling Stones line up. As cool off the field as he was excellent on it. Honourable mention for Francie 'Freddie' Grehan.
Your own cult hero has to be somone elses 'bete noire' so yes to the Mayo man, Jimmy Burke would fit the bill. We will never forget that classic header six inches off the ground in the 1989 Connacht Final.

Ahh Billy Byrne...the memories!
Was it the 97 Leinster final where he came on 10 mins from the end and scored 1-2(the goal being the poxiest Ive ever seen)?Would also throw in Tony Doran(not only could he score a vital goal but he could cure your cattle of mastitis as well),Stoney Burke and Jimmy holohan from Wexford.
Outside my own county Geoffrey mc Gonnigle,Niall Patterson and Niall Sheridan spring to mind as well as Pat O Byrne up in Wicklow. Now Pat wasn't the most elegant player in history but many a player left Aughrim with a sore shoulder after running into him.

Billy Byrne is your man! What a legend!

Or Pat O'Connor from Offaly! I only have one memory of him but!

Billy Dooley! 3 points and he nearly on his knees at the end of the 94 final!

Tony Doran was my hero when I was a kid juniorsub. Saw him scoring three goals against Dublin in a league match in Croke Park in 1976 or 1977 when we had been 7/8 points ahead. Billy Byrne was certainly cut from the same cloth!

From this parish and from the same era as Doran would have to be Joey Towell. About half the size of Doran but nearly scored as many goals! Only thing he ever was a Division Two medal I think and maybe a Dublin SHC. Only stopped playing about 5 years ago, the mad lunatic :-)

Mick Lyons was my hero as a kid. Phenomenal footballer and scared by daylights out of every Dublin man who ever went near him. Poor Joe McNally was afraid of his shadow in near that Meath goal.

Cult Heroes from Wexford? Stoney Burke in goals anyway, must have been 20 stone and I'd say he hurled for about 20 clubs too. Henry Butler in the goal for Buffers Alley played until he must have been nearly 50 and broke up many a fine corner forward. Johnny Doyle from Ransgrange, father of Brendan Doyle who played for wexford over the last few years- I marked Johnny in a league match a few years back, he was centre-back on their senior team and was 50 years of age after a bypass surgery. Old players always have appeal, especially when they're brilliant into their 40's - Ger Cody (Rathgarogue), Jimmy Holohan (Rathnure), Tom Dempsey (Alley), Skinner Walsh (Starlights), John Roche (Gusserane), lads like that.

Don't there has ever been a bigger cult hero in Armagh then Francie Bellew!! Always remember the crowd roaring when he performed even the most basic of skills.
