Why do frees not count? It's a skill Shefflin mastered better than Carey hence why he's been taking them all his life .Some of the frees Shefflin has got were more difficult then any shot he's got outfield. If you asked any team who would they prefer to have on their team it would be Shefflin all day, he can win games on his own. No matter how he gets the scores, he gets them, which makes him the best forward ever and imo the greatest hurler ever. Points aren't awarded for how much flare or skill you have i'm afraid.

Much as I love hurling Ive never denied Im a late comer , love the game but my knowledge is limited saw Nicky English JBM and Dj but my knowledge back then poor , Ive always thought its easier to be a great player in a great side, loved watching Henry but have to say as my head was turned from the big ball to the small there was one guy I just couldnt get enough of John Mulane , no All irelands , but as I never saw Ring Mackie or Rackard an only going on what Ive seen , a thumbs up to Mulane .

I'm talking about greatest players rebel cork and you mention Henry's frees I'm just saying Eoin Kelly is a better free taker and I'm also saying John Doyle is greatest of all time as no other hurler in history has equalled his national titles between all Ireland's and leagues and remember Doyle never had the opportunity to win one through the back door like Henry did.
Also jimmy Doyle got wing forward on millennium team before dj picked by analysts il remind you.
Another possible greatest hurler is mick Roche and greatest keeper tony redden and of course yer own brilliant Christi ring.
Remember also jimmy Doyle has 3 minor all Ireland's to go with the 6 seniors
So many greats but john Doyle's record achievements are still unbroken so on honours won on the field of play he truly is the greatest of all time

No one not even the great man himself considered John Doyle to be as good as ring. From memory ( not always 100% granted) I think he said the difference between his 8 medals n rings 8 were he was lucky enough to be on teams who won 8 all Ireland's whereas ring went out n made his team win 8 all Ireland's. no doubt an element of modesty there but an element of truth also.

I think that goes to the core of why the 4 considered by most to be the greatest are forwards. At any level in the game it is easier to be a good back than a good forward. It is easier to stop something from happening than it is to make it happen.

Just because you say something does not mean it is true. Eoin Kelly of Waterford was a great free-taker alright. Most people would say that Henry was better. Do Tipp have any free-takers?

But from the time mere mortals began to take it a bit seriously around thirty (forty at the furthest stretch of the imagination) years ago, it's hard to look beyond Henry Shefflin. A born winner indidually and tremendous leader to boot.

And regarding who is the better freetaker, Shefflin or Eoin Kelly, it's a somewhat unfair comparison at the retrospective stage of both lads' playing days because Kelly really wouldn't have the same experience at the business end of championships at senior, under 21, minor and club levels. And at the end of the day who would you really want to take a penalty in a cauldron situation such as the All Ireland final of 2009 when RIchie Power was cynically pulled down in the box with the game apparently in the melting pot? Ah, there's only one King Henry.

Though when this debate raises its head in another fifty years or so, I think they will still be talking about a Kelly lad. Though I doubt it will be Eoin.

Im with Dessie on this.

As great a player Henry is its DJ all day long for me.

For me the greatest ever isnt about consistency..its about individual skill/ability. For instance, Ryan giggs was a more consistent player than George Best..but you dont hear Giggs been mentioned in a greatest ever debate.

DJ at his very best was better than Henry at his very best. Hands down in my opinion.

im going to hurling/watching hurling matches since 1975ish..best i ever seen was brian whelehan..from minor/21 up he won games almost on his own for offaly.he was that good.others id include in top rak would be henry,dj.tommy walsh.nicky english.joe canning.brian corcoran.eoin kelly tipp.john mullane.paul flynn and one no mentioned before on this thread,noel o dwyer of tipp,a truly great warrior
