Realdud would Jason Ryan not be as good as Pillar and the circus he had around him. Pillar probably led Dublin to some of their worst defeats

Sorry, I find your question a little odd considering I was speaking of Ryan in a positive light, but to answer your question, I never had any faith when Caffrey was in charge, I knew we'd win nothing. I'll put the 'Realdud' down to dyslexia :)

@MukrossHead

but the championship is a different ball game, Donegal AI champions 2012, Derry haven't even got to the semi final since 2004

Point taken but that is all in the past.

As things stand Derry are Div 1, Donegal are in Div 2 & to cap it all Derry are at home, so to say that a Derry win would be a shock is wide of the mark.

Kildare for me. They won titles at nearly every age group underage in 2013 and have a massive conveyor belt of talent.

@MuckrossHead

yes the home advantage would be an advantage to the players but it doesn't automatically mean that we will draw more support, you fellows are closer to Derry City than some of us

Celtic park is definitely a benefit to Derry, but it remains to see how much of a benefit. I live on Cityside of Derry, and I'm not a overall fan of the location of Celtic park. Great stadium, but it seriously lacks parking facilities to cater for large crowd.

Donegal will still likely be favourites, and im sure you will find Donegal well ahead of Derry in odds to win the All Ireland 2014 with most bookies.

Derry being underdogs, having home advantage, and maybe having a good run in Division 1 against top quality teams will put them in a strong position to cause an upset.

This debate is ridiculously early. Tyrone, Cork and Kildare are all attempting to rebuild or reposition themselves, and Kerry have done a lot of work but are still in flux too. One of these four could be spectacularly successful and do what the Dubs did last year. The Dubs managed to go through the league and championship last year very successfully playing the same way and this won't do the trick in 2014. Like Sam, I believe that a defensive team like Donegal or Tyrone would have posed real problems for the Dubs last year, but Mayo cleared the path demonstrating the catch 22 these teams face: the same game plan won't cut the mustard every time unless the fixtures fall very kindly. This is why Tyrone particularly have had a major rethink. While Mayo are the only side to have beaten the Dubs in championship after 2010, the threats this year will come from inside Leinster (Meath and Kildare), and more particularly in the knockout games against a refreshed Donegal or a more sophisticated Tyrone. A final not featuring the Dubs at all is not that hard to imagine and could be novel: Cork or Kerry against Donegal, or Mayo versus Tyrone. But it's all just way too early and I'm pretty sure Jim Gavin will have something new for the Dubs to try tactically to boost their chances of doing the double.

The pairing for the semi-finals this year will be Leinster v Ulster & Munster v Connaught. Are any Ulster counties upon winning the Ulster championship capable of defeating Dublin in an AI semi-final?

Assuming that the provincila winners all get to the semi final then of course the Ulster champions are capable of beating Dublin.

Dublin will be favourites & rightly so, but they are beatable & with good managers in charge, the Ulster teams would not be without hope.
