Rugby World Cup 2023

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

some great posts here - as a rugby fan I would love it to be here esp as my kids be old enough to go

few things to bear in mind
- some big games will possibly be held in Cardiff/murrayfield e.g. 2 qfinals in 2015 world cup will be in Cardiff and in 2007 there were games in Scotland and wales (Ireland were offered some but declined due to lact of stadia) gving games to other countries is done to get votes
- where will knockout games be played - likely 2 games in Dublin and 2 games elsewhere (maybe Cardiff/murrayfield) but I hope we get a quarter final in gaelic gronuds and both semis in Dublin (should both be croke park but irfu may want to use aviva
- where will final be played I would think it has to be croke park but irfu may prefer it in a redeveloped Aviva, bear in mind in 2015 the biggest stadium in London (Wembley) wont be hosting final it will be the cabbage patch aka twickers

be interested in hearing other thoughts on the above- judging by the majority of comments on this board public support is behind the bid - and lets hope we get it and have a great tournament

What about LOI soccer grounds? some may argue they are in better nick in terms of a starting point for redevelopment than some GAA grounds. Also the pitch dimensions would be closer too. One thing I don't like about GAA grounds hosting rugby is the rugby field looks dwarfed.

Aviva cant host a RWC final as capacity is not 60000 or bigger so a RWC final in Ireland would have to be in Croke Park
Irish plans so far have mentioned nothing of sharing games with Wales or Scotland as their is belief there is enough ways to win a bid without resorting to giving games away ie calling on favours and strength of bid.
Think knockout games will all be played in Dublin apart from maybe 1 quarter final.
Croke Park ho host the 2 semis, the final and 1 maybe 2 quarters with the aviva to host the 3rd placed playoff and 1/2 quarters with maybe a redeveloped stadium elsewhere in Cork, Belfast hosting a quarter

Capacity would be major issue with LOI grounds. They hjust are not big enough

All LoI grounds will be in use at the time a potential Rugby World Cup would be played.

Sorry AthCliath, I see now you already mentioned Wales, I wasn't questioning your post, I was just suggesting Wales as a nation where rugby is No.1, just as you did :D

I'd be impressed if you could tell me a LOI stadium as good as Pairc ui Chaoimh, casement park,Fitzgerald stadium, pearse stadium not to mention croker. Pretty much the only thing Ireland have in their favour when bidding is the size of the stadiums. Of course all of them will need to be worked on but two of them are being done anyway.

most league of ireland grounds are in run down conditions il give you that but where people are getting gaa grounds would need to be done up to host rugby is beyond me as I saw games played in last world cup in new zealand with grass banks behind the goals just like the ones in navan

In Wales, undoubtedly in terms of spectator sports, their national team in rugby will get a lot more supporters for their 3 or 4 home games that they play than the soccer team. In terms of club teams, I would suggest Cardiff City and Swansea City (now that they are both in the Premier League) get more supporters on average than their rugby Heineken Cup/Rabo-league-thing equivalent teams. In terms of playing numbers, soccer is ahead of rugby at all age groups ( I did a quick check out of curiosity). All that said, rugby may mean more the national psyche though in Wales as it is the game that puts them on the global map and you would almost associate Welsh sport with rugby (particularly given that mostly they participate under the GB flag in all other sports bar soccer).

Out of interest . What would people call Ireland's national sport? You'll have the whack it with a stick men (shocking waste of good firewood ) :). Lads saying its hurling, when clearly the most participated and attended sport is football. Cue the what was prince Phillip and Obama handed comments.
Anyways since we say that rugby is not no 1 in nz or sa whatis no 1 in tthis country? Obviously it is the only game that counts. FOOTBALL!!!!!!

What would happen if the GAA finals went to a replay? Choas could ensue.

England are going to have 5-8 matches in their Olympic Stadium meaning fans will be further away from the action compared to a GAA pitch. It's not an issue.

tinrylandman: madagascar are now my second fav team! Hope they make it.

The reality is Rugby is not that big world wide compared so Soccer. Soccer is much bigger in coutries like France, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Argentina and possibly South Africa. Aussie Rules bigger in AUS and GAA here. There are 10 teams in the world cup that are in anyway contenders and if the other 10 were taken out it would prob make it more exciting. Well 4 groups of 4 would be better taking numbers into account.

Ticket prices for the next world cup are a rip off so don't expect too many visitors from outside of the EU.

Royaldunne do you mean football as in soccer or gaelic?

cricket might be NZ's number one sport. Can't think of any others except maybe Rugby league.

Gaelic and Hurling are the national sports but if only pick one its football due to it being played at higher level more
Rugby is no 1 in NZ while in SA it is up there with soccer though depends on the area as soccer traditionally seen as sport of the blacks while rugby more a sport of the afrikaaners

Olympic stadium you prob wont be further away from action than a GAA pitch considering in Olympic stadium they are putting in retractable seats
wouldn't it be possible to put extra time and ensure game doesn't go to a replay?

No 1 in Ireland is defiantly football, be it Gaelic or Association is the debate.

In terms of spectators Gaelic Football I'd imagine beats Association hands down. Not sure what the figure is in terms of participation but I'd say it's close. TV viewing would maybe be fairly close, soccer maybe ahead because of wall to wall coverage for most of the year in comparison to Gaelic Football.

All in all it's very close but I'd say Gaelic Football shades it?

Rugby is still pretty big world wide and increasing all the time in new areas.
France has its regions where rugby is totally dominant like most of the southern half with area's around Biarritz, Toulouse, Perpignan, bayonne, etc all rugby dominated.
no spoets are near as big as soccer
no if those 10 teams were taken from world cup it wouldn't make it more exciting. Rugby world cup will never go back down in numbers and will only ever increase in number
Ticket prices are high but their will be plenty from oz, sa at world cup always is. Backpackers etc
