Ormond I have noticed a terrible trend in rugby for corrupting names to end them with an 'o'. Our captain Paulo gets subjected to it, managing a grand slam winning team wasn't enough to protect Deco from it, and even the greatest of them all, poor ol' Drico, had to suffer the ignominy of it all! In light of this, do you think we should reconsider hosting the whole thing completely to prevent more of these sorts coming to our shores and insulting our finest like yourself?
who calls Paul O Connell? "Paulo" never heard him called that. Paulie is more what he's called
Thing about them is they don't mind it. I totally dislike ormo and it doesn't make sense. Ormond makes sense.

Ormo

How about Ormeau? Quite flashy. Kind of Gallic flavour to it as well.

Great article on some of our rugger guys in the sports section of the Sunday independent by Eamonn Sweeney last Sunday.

That article seemed to imply that our World Cup bid is a bit farcical. Do you agree with it? I thought you were all for it.

No. Considering we haven't bid for it yet. If they bid and they win they need to put the bigger name teams, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in non-traditiinal rugby areas to promote the games there. Probably New Zealand in Donegal because of the Dave Gallaher connection. They could have skills coaching sessions with the local kids, give rugby a boost in the area, maybe inspire some to set up some under-age clubs. Passing up this opportunity to promote rugby amongst the youth in non-traditional rugby playing areas would be a mistake. Seeing the upcoming game between Leinster and Ulster to be held in the Tallaght Stadium gives me hope that there are some progressive thinkers in the IRFU and uf we did get the World Cup they could use it to promote the game.

No what?
Yes we would ideally put the big teams based in non traditional areas. New Zealand have been to Ramelton on occasions when here in November for internationals..
Yes there could be open training sessions etc.

I think it's a bit pointless talking about World Cup 2013 when we haven't even bid for it yet, nevermind won the bid. Now uf you're talking about dreaming about ut that's a different matter. We have the stadiums and we have tye infrastructure. Does Veradkaar miving to Health change anything ? He was a good guy to have on the side of the IRFU if they launch a bid.

Whats pointless about discussing something that will be decided in the next year or two and how we will need to know what we need to do to update stadiums at this stage to ensure we have best bid possible

So? In what why would you be involved?

Why would you not like to see stadiums upgraded if it was to happen?

I didn't say I wouldn't want stadiums to be upgraded, if they needed to be upgraded and if the IRFU or IRB were fitting the bill for these hypothetical upgrades. The GAA and the IRFU are not gonna go around upgrading county grounds just in the hope of making a winning bid. They'll sumit their bid with facts and figures showing how the grounds would look after uogrades and upgrade them accordingly if they get the go-ahead for the World Cup. You, me or the man in the moon don't know if their bid will be successful.

IRFU wont exactly fit the bill but government will provide funds and IRFU may provide some funds. IRB certainly wont provide upgrades.
GAA will benefit long term from upgrades and upgrades will long term aid GAA.
I know I don't know if the bid will def be successful but if we were to only discuss things that are definite then this forum would rarely exist

Bid formerly announced and Croker set to host both semi's and the final. GAA said they will receive funding for 6 or 7 grounds. Some will get major work others very minor with things like a big screen added, media facilities etc. I didn't hear if the work planned for Casement and the Pairc in Cork are included in the 6 or 7. The GAA would be wise to get funding for grounds like Navan, Newbridge, Drogheda and Aughrim as part of the deal. Even if they won't be used because those 4 grounds are by far the worst in Leinster.

Anybody know the biggest threat to us in the bid? I'd guess a country like Russia or USA would be?

France, Australia and New Zealand surely out of the running given they had the last 3. South Africa have the facilities so hopefully they don't look for it.

Jack Pairc and Casement included.

Argentina maybe the biggest threat. They will argue that it cannot simply Go to an Anglophone country every 8 years. They have the facilities in place already si nô major investirent required.

Will be amazed if the Irish bid doesn't win. So many powerful forces behind it. The British govt will support it esp since Northern Ireland are involved and it will be sold internationally as a bid to cement the "peace process". Corporate Ireland will be totally on board and the considerable marketing might of the IDA and Bord Failte/Northern Ireland Tourist Board will be fully behind it to United States support is also virtually guaranteed. And the GAA will get it's nice new shiny stadia that they may fill or - more like it - half fill once or twice a year while rugby is showcased to even more consolidate itself as the number 1 loved sport in the hearts and minds of the young. A very handsome trade off for the IRFU. Not indeed that any of this bothers me as such since gaelic football lost my heart and mind a good long time ago and as a hurling man I have no concerns about hurling standing up to and outshining in any comparison to rugby. The 2023 Rugby World Cup in Ireland is an irresistible force. It WILL happen so we may as well all get behind it.

Rugby World Cup for Ireland great news great sporting news.
Celtic Park in Derry capacity to hold 20,000 plus would be an option !
We could have real multi-sport stadia throughout the country instead of wasting money on countless white-elephants.
