Will Donegal take Division 2 seriously?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Going by some of his rather questionable remarks in 2013 regarding Donegal's desire for Division 1 football

"We don't really like the league" or something like that.... wasn't it

I presume Donegal will be playing Div 3 football sooner rather than later with such logic... ;)

Hopefully not... they are far too good a team for that and certainly above Div 3 standard

I wonder if Jim thinks they should have taken Div 1 more seriously now...

Playing in Div 2 is not ideal preparation for the Summer ahead

Their main rivals will all be playing bigger games against better teams in Div 1

I guess they'll be doing all they can to get back into Div 1 in 2014

A rather interesting turn around

But I guess we wont know until Donegal get going...

My guess... they'll be gunning for promotion back into that thing that they don't really like....

Chances are jim will focus on retaining Div 2 status at the very least. Like most managers he will use the league as a template to blood new players and hopefully go on from there. I'm sure he doesn't want to be playing Div 3 next year, regardless of what some people think I'm fairly sure he didn't want to be playing Div 2 this year either.

Division 2 is very competitive this year with three provincial finalists including a provincial champion and other teams striving for improvement such as Galway, Armagh etc nothing easy in Division 2 and promotion will be hard earned for any team, every team will and should be striving for promotion to Division 1, I don't believe Donegal will be any different

Div 2 may be competitive but it's still a poor enough standard !

I agree realdub the standard in div 2 won't give Jim mcguinness and Donegal too much trouble.

Realdub you must be drinking out of Sam too much. Poor standard? I'd argue Donegal Monaghan Meath etc to be a higher standetd than Westmeath Kildare or Derry. We are talking about last years all ire champion and Ulster champion.

Division 2 is fine for us, we'll get promoted and back to winning ways handy enough (with respect). Tyrone were div 1 finalists last year we'd been relegated. We battered them in the championship.

What was the last team that went down and came back up the next year? Some even went down to Div3!

JMcG has already set his stall out with regard to the league, he will treat Div 2 in the same way as he treated Div 1, as a means to an end. The Donegal squad is a small one & as the old saying goes "you can have whatever you want but you can't have everything". I'd say his target this year is the Ulster Championship, which is wide open, & everything after that will be a bonus.

The difference this year is that Donegal don't have to face Tyrone in the first round of the Ulster Champonship, there are no celebrations, late club championship or foreign holidays to hamper preparations. Unlike other posters here I do not expect Div 2 to be a cakewalk & I think teams will all take points off each other.

If Donegal stay injury free they have a good chance of going back up, but that is not the target. The target is readiness for the toughest provincial championship of them all, Ulster.

Samforthehills - you may have "battered" Tyrone in the championship this year, but Monaghan also battered Donegal. So why do you think that you are going to walk the division? And putting "with respect" in your post, while simultaneously being totally disrespectful to the other teams doesn't really work. Division 2 will be extremely competitive next year with at least 6 of the 8 teams fancying their chances of promotion, so if Donegal or any other team go in with the idea that they will coast it, they could come unstuck fairly quickly.

I think Tyrone went down and bounced straight back up, a year or 2 back.

I think Donegal will take the league much like we did in 2011 and try to build up to the championship. The big difference this time is that Div 2 has better teams and we won't be taken as lightly as we did in 2011. We will drop points at some stage in Div 2 and promotion is certainly not guaranteed but I expect us to be much better than in the 2013 league campaign and hopefully in the mix for promotion.

Was at the charity game last night in Ballybofey, Brolly still has the touch scoring 1-3 I think and blowing kisses to the crowd!! Gas Man!!

they might find it hard to get promotion and then use the excuse like this year that they were not taking the league serious
that the ulster first round is there main aim all year, certainly didnt look past that tyrone match as they stopped playing after they won that game haha
