Another Son of Eireann lost to Aussie Rules

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I see Daniel Flynn from Kildare has today signed for AFL side Port Adelaide - Kildare's loss is Aussie Rules gain.

I hope it works out for him and that in a couple of years he might return ala Tadhg Kennelly and help the Lillies get their hands on Sam!

It's a hard loss for Kildare and here is hoping that more young lads don't join the exodus - but sure you can't really blame them I guess

Go neire on bothar leat!

Hmmm, folks seem to forget about Ciarán Kilkennys return to claim a Celtic Cross also!

This Kildare kid will do well though to stay in Oz, cos there is no chance Kildare will even get close to a final nevermind win one!

Snufalufagus you cant really compare. Kilkenny wasnt really out there. He went for a holiday and then came back to play gaelic.

It is disappointing for the counties to lose their young players but fair play to the young lad and fair play to anyone else who get this opportunity. I know its hard to accept but these guys are getting paid to play sport. its not gaelic but its the closest sport to gaelic that there is (thats why they scout here)

Best of luck to him alright.

Has all the physical attributes needed, just going to obviously take a while for him to adapt to the different ball and positional roles (halfback or on the wing?).

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and you'd be mad to not at least explore it. Hopefully he doesn't suffer from homesickness.

Must be something in the water up in JTB anyways.

Best of luck to Daniel. Hope it works out for him. Big loss for Kildare.

Your a great lad snuff. Instead of wishing him well you decide you'd come on here just to have a cut. No doubt you'll come out with the 'Sure everyone picked on Ciarán Kilkenny when he went so I'm going to do the same thing' line. You call yourself manly? Its only children who go on like you.

Congrats and the best of luck to Daniel Flynn on getting every young persons dream, to become a professional sportsman. Its hard to say if he will be a loss to Kildare as I stated on a site here before, the way he was used by the management last year would be enough to send any young fella away from the sport, he was started in 5 different positions over the course of this championship. Part of my reasoning for Kieran McGeeney to go from Kildare. LHB, MF, LHF, CHF and FF! The only time I got to see him properly was in the Leinster U21 final this year against Longford where he scored 1-1 I think, could be wrong. Started and stayed at LHF. Anyway, he has a very impressive physique and a great leap from my memories of that night. Note of Warning: A clubmate of his spent a while out in Australia and it didn't work out, Paul Cribbin! However I think Cribbin is one of the more impressive Kildare players of the past championship and league season.

Cribbin was there for two years wasn't he though?

Obviously showed enough to begin with to earn the contract he did, not sure why it didn't work out for him though, was he offered another contract or not? It didn't work out in terms of forging a career in Aussie Rules but I'm sure it worked out for him in experiencing a different culture and way of life for two years and living and training as a professional athlete. It probably helps Flynn a great deal to be close to lad that's already gone through what he'll be experiencing.

I suppose you could say the exact same thing about any of the job / trade fairs held here with employers and agencies from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US etc looking to hire Irish people.

How dare young people emigrate for full time employment...

it is a bad thing for the GAA
young people choosing money over enjoyment
doesnt exactly set the ideal of what the gaa is all about when you see the upcoming stars doing this

you could say same thing
but this is a sport
the guy grew up knowing you dont get paid and choose it as his preferred sport
few aussie cash signs thrown his way and his mind is persuaded
dont see whats to celebrate a young man doing this
especially after kildare gaa investing time and effort aswell as his club for anumber of years into developing the player

Shock horror hill but sometimes an individual might choose to do what they think is best for themselves in certain circumstances rather than doing what others might feel is best for the GAA.

I'm sure he'll enjoy his time in Australia, if he wasn't going to enjoy it then why would he go? (I'm sure you'll reply with money on that one though)

It's not up to Dan Flynn to set the ideals of the GAA.

He's one of an absolutely tiny percentage of GAA players leaving to play another sport professionally. There's much more people out there who leave the GAA for worse reasons than the chance to play in the AFL.

im not saying they dont do what they want to suit themselves
but from a gaa point of view and well thats what we are on a gaa forum after all
its hardly something to celebrate
loosing an up and coming guy to a sport he never played in his life simply becuase he is going to be getting paid to do so.
i said the same about ciaran kilkenny before you try throw that at me aswell.
he may be one of a percentage but everytime one does go it gets more media coverage then entire county championship
hardly a positive from a gaa point of view is it now.

A year to the day and now Sean Hurley and Paddy Brophy have signed contracts with Freemantle and the West Coast Eagles respectively.

It's a massive opportunity for them and not something many young lads would be in a position to turn down. I suppose the fact both of them are going through the same process together and following on from what their teammates Dan Flynn and Paul Cribbin went through should hopefully help them settle into life over there and how to handle the mental side things as a professional athlete.

Best of luck to the pair of them as well as Tyrone's Conor McKenna, a once in a lifetime opportunity really.
