Is Noel McGrath better than Joe Canning?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Hard to say who is better. Joe Canning has been riddled with injuries this year but when he is on form he is fairly devastating. Noel mcgrath is a different type of player so it is difficult to compare them. Mcgrath is very valuable for what he offers in a playmaker role.

The two of the need to do it consistently over a number of years first before we can say who is better.

As for Richiej that's a sweeping generalisation out of you regarding tipp people. I never heard of a county team called uk so that's a nice rock to hide behind.

Ask the Cork lads that were in thurles in 2008 against Galway!!

They will tell ya who is a better player!!

Stupid post!!

Noel Mcgrath doesn't be man marked by 2-3 players when he lines out for the "Mahers"(Tipp) unlike Joe!

Noel Mcgrath is fulfilling his potential, joe isnt... yet. Needs a break and get injury free before we'll see him at his best

i was at the cork game v galway in thules all those years ago. have to say joe was unreal that day. he scored one sideline from about 60 yards, unreal.

i havent really been impressed with him sonce. his perfomance v tipp was poor, i suppose it would hepl alot if the other forwards around him were any good.

noel mcgrath is lucky in that he is playing with 5 good forwards around him especially eoin and lar in particular. i do agree that i can see mcgrath becoming a shefflin like quarterback figure for tipp in the nxt 10 years. noel is 3 years younger and therefore has more potential but canning has the talent. joe needs fitness bigtime.

o ya regarding the 7s, joe did not score 8-2 from play v the mighty eireog!!

Nope.

Joe may be over hyped but he is a better player than young McGrath, who shows great promise.

There are some very disillusioned and confused Galway posters on this thread.

The myth of Joe has been well and truly put to bed many over times over. And it shows when Galway posters are reduced to what if Joe played with such and such, then he'd be a great type comments.

I've had discussion before and nobody has been able to convince me that Joe is worth the reputation that precedes him. As far as I'm concerned, at three years his younger, McGrath is a far better hurler than Canning. And bar injury, always will be.

They are like chalk and cheese. Each player has different roles within their own teams!

I don't think last Sunday would change Henry's view to be honest, McGrath had a good game but not a great one. It goes to show how fickle people are in this country, one minute Joe is the best ever the next he is over hyped. He is barely out of u-21 and he racks up serious scores. Everyone has been aware since this time last year that he was playing with a groin problem that requires surgery, yet he has played on and that has maybe hindered him. He got slated for his performance against Kilkenny, yet am I the only one who sees that there were always 2 KK defenders on him and that most teams play 2 on him? His vision is seriiously under-rated here too, as one aspect of his game that I like the most is the passes or hand-passes he lays off to other men quite frequently.

loyal2theroyal.

there is no myth. Canning has won minor, u-21 and club all irelands, no mean feat, and more than any team from our mythical capital has won in many years in either code. He has done this, more often than not, with 2 or 3 lads on him, and yet he is often the standout player. He had a "bad" year this year, which was certainly bad by his standards, but very very good by most people. Only got a point from play against Tipp (and a sideline & frees), but outside of that got a significant amount in every game despite not taking frees. Anyone else we'd be saying he's great. Pathetic post.

No way.

Canning is a freak and i mean that in a good way. Noel is a very good hurler, but Joe is the type of hurler that we only see every 50 years, like Christy Ring.

Just a minor correction here to those saying Joe is 3 years older. Joe is only 21 and McGrath is 19 so that is 2 years older from my estimation. Joe can do the unexpected and that's what excites the crowd where McGrath is a bit more predictable. I would still take Joe to be in my team if I had a choice.

Cant really compare them as they dont really play the same role. Its like comparing Eoin Kelly (Tipp) and Brick Walsh.

In terms of out and out scoring ability then aren't many much better than Canning. I think Noel McGrath's vision is better than most players in the game, maybe second only to Shefflin.

Worried than Canning is suffering from a bit of burn-out at the moment, needs a while away from the game i think

Joe Canning should take some time out of hurling. It might be good for him and for galway, if some other team won the Galway county championship. Apparently he needs an operation on some injury he has.

Regarding this debate, two fantastic hurlers. I would love both of them to be in A Cork jersey. To me, however, Joe Canning is a unique player. I had the privilege of being in Semple Stadium that evening when he scored 2-12 points against Cork. To me it was singularly, the greatest performance that any one individual forward has ever given in an intense and closely fought intercounty game (that I have seen) given that he was on the losing team that evening. No matter what Cork did that evening they could not contain him. As we said that evening on the way home, three players at a time could not handle Joe Canning, unfortunately for Galway, Cork's 11 other players had no problems with 14 of the other Galway players!

Noel McGrath is outstanding player, Joe Canning, as redfoot said, is a freak!! (in a good way of course)

The only wonder is that it took Loyal so long to have yet another dig at Joe Canning. Will you ever get over 2001 Loyal? McGrath is a fine hurler but Canning is something else. As an earlier poster said, it would certainly be in Joe's own interest if he took the time out to have the surgery he needs.
