Should The Tearing Of The Jersey Off An Opponent Be A Red Card

(Oldest Posts First)

After watching the spectacle in the recent Kerry V Galway game in the last few minutes' where a player tore / ripped the Jersey off an opponent it looked sad to see.
I am to understand (and Cavan is not a Hurling County ) that in Hurling any interference with an opponents face covering is a Card offence .
It did not look good in that recent game and I feel it would merit a sanction of some sort

It looked terrible to see Photos of that Galway player with his Jersey ripped open.
I feel such behaviour ( Rather than smart jibes been given ) should be deplored and in future a straight red Card be given for such behaviour.
It would not be lost on most people that it happened at a time that Galway were on the way back into this game
Straight Red is my view

totally agree with you. The dead rubber nature of the game was a factor at the lack of outrage.
Galway knew that div. status was in the bag I think at that stage. It would be red in a knockout championship game probably.
Didn't want to come across as being particularly bothered and Paul is a tough lad.
Congrats to Kerry.

Should have a sewing machine on the sideline. The jersey tearer needs to sew the jersey back together to an acceptable quality level before they can return to play on. Paul Galvin will give classes!

.....Cavan is not a Hurling County

Your club mate Seanie Johnson learned how to play hurling 10 minutes before making his inter-county debut......

'Hurling' was a convenient excuse for SJ to join the Lilywhites.

I would question the quality of these jerseys, especially the Kerry ones. David Clifford wearing a ripped shirt is common, and must be the poor quality of the shirt!

Owen Mulligan tried to tear manager Eamon Coleman's jersey in 2001. I have a newspaper cutting of it but can't find the photo online.

It's a yellow card offence imo. It can happen in the heat of the moment that you grab a players shirt during a face off (not condoning it).
Premeditated offences like sledging and feigning injury should be looked at first.

I've always hated the way some goalkeepers scream at the umpire and wave their arms apart to pressure him into waving off a debatable score.
Im not sure if that's a black card offence but it should be.

'T'was shocking stuff indeed realdub the way players were always trying to rip the shirt of Connoly. I particularly remember the incident in Coopers last game for Kerry when he tried it! Semi in 2016!

Stephen O'Neill used to wear a paper jersey just to make opposition defences look bad lol - Stevie got a lot of negative attention, and as he was a strong lad, something had to give. Used to amaze me when you'd see a good forward with the jersey in ribbons and the back with an innocent head on him and the referee doing nothing

Agh Jersys seem to ripp or tear more easily now , but its not a nice sight to see a player with the Jersey ripped off.
I am told when we went to Newyork in 1947 to play Kerry in an Ireland ( we beat them out the Gate of Gaelic Park ) that the players were warned before going that the cold wind from the Hudson River would freeze you on late September day. I heard it said that the Cavan people who were gathered around windows ( Houses with wirelesses were full ) were amazed that our fellows came fully equipped for the Cold Hudson blast.
I understand none of the strong Cavan Jerseys were torn of our Lads backs

Pulling of jersey should be allowed as genuine tackle.
Up to teams to decide on quality of jersey so as to negate the effect of a jersey pull.

Sone intercounty manager will go for a paper jersey, others will have an easy rip panel/collar so the attacking player can get away without being held back by jersey pull
