The World Cup is hard to win. Only 1 NH team has ever won it, and historically we aren't even one of the big 3 NH teams. Getting to a semifinal is easier depending on what draw you get, which is largely down to luck. England are in a semifinal this year without playing anyone good on current form for example. Too much is made of not getting past the QF when that was partly down to the draw this time, and injuries the last time."
They'd have the record for wooden spoons if they played in it until Italy arrived. Ireland should be better than them yet in three world cups were knocked out by them in the group stage, play off and Quarter final.

It's a awful world cup record for both Ireland and Scotland no amount of excuses can cloud that fact.

Of course its hard to win and Ireland no nearer winning it that Dublin are to winning McCarthy. This year for rugby was like 2013 to us!

and "even Argentina" seen tonight. The manner of the defeat reminded me of Ireland against New Zealand in the World Cup Quarter final in 2019.

Had Italy not arrived Scotland would have, at this stage, well overtaken us in terms of wooden spoons. Italy being in the championship has meant most years how ever bad Scotland are Italy are usually worse.

I have to say, the rugby chaps have gone up in my estimation. A little bird told me that certain opportunists in the political sphere were angling for a homecoming so that they could do the whole selfie thing.

However, the team preferred coming back to be greeted by their families, friends and genuine supporters.

I have to say, I like that. What happened in July when the Dublin team was shunted off to behind the north quays while a team that didn't a game were given the red carpet says all you need to know about the Bengal Lancers who "run" our unfortunate city.

That was a fantastic game last night, there was no real looser, just S A were nominated to collect the cup by a single point, a similar ending to our game with NZ ie, no real looser either, sadly rugby has gained a strong foothold here in Ireland as our compelling sport which has been on the cards for a some time, there is room for the gaa as well but for now rugby has the upper hand.

No real loser? Try telling that to the AllBlacks, no losers heh heh. Was the ref 'a loser' on the night, I wonder?

A lot of these pivotal rwc games are flipping on questionable refereeing decisions, and it's been like that for decades. It seems like when the intensity ratchets up, as it does in the business end of a world cup, the refs just can't 'administer' the breakdown accurately enough, and they can't call set piece penalties fairly either, and their decisions are deciding who wins and who loses. The poor devil last night missed two basic knock ons, he was so frazzled with his responsibility.

Yes there were real losers, New Zealand lost and Ireland couldn't make it to a semi final. After the final whistle in the Ireland game v SA you'd have thought Ireland won the World Cup. Rugby has gained no foothold, you say there's room for the GAA, open your eyes. GAA is the main sport by a distance and always will be.

Where has rugby gained an upper hand? Club rugby at an all time low, majority of players quit at around 15, no new clubs formed, AIL has couple of hundred in attendance.

Back in the day Rugby was a winter sport in the muck. GAA needs to get out of the muck and operate a schedule that has more inter-county games in good weather. We can all co-exist. Congrats to the All-Ireland rugby team for the fine effort.

Rugby will never gain any upper hand. The worldwide audience is very low and the recent interest in Ireland is the usual band wagonners who jump aboard regularly. Remember Italia 90 and Jack and the lads. No long term gain for soccer.
Also Rugby has the worst referees ever seen. No two agree on the rules and I lost count the number of times the commentator questioned a key decision. In the final the referee gave a penalty and before it was taken said he made a mistake. It was then taken and South Africa got 3 points. They won by 1.
A total joke.
The GAA caters for both male and female at local level up and down the country. No other sport does this. Look at the growth of the GAA in Dublin for this reason precisely.

Think the upper hand is a bit of a stretch to be honest.

When push comes to shove, the traditional rugby schools probably don't want small rural villages.

To be fair to the gaa they invest in grass roots everywhere.

It's cultural impact is too far beyond sport to be threatened in my lifetime anyway

No real loser? What's the point in playing any matches?

I enjoyed the world cup, were alot of interesting games, but slightly disappointed with the final result, but SA deserved it.

On a side note, it was strange listening to Rob Kearney talking about how the springboks win would help unite their country, seeing as how people were saying the same thing nigh on 30 years ago when they won their first.
The incurable optimists said the same thing in '98 when France won the soccer world cup and the nation has only become more divided since.
Perhaps we overstate the importance of sport when it comes to these things?

The World Cup as a major tournament, drew a wide viewership from a variety of sports followers, Ireland exited at the q/final stage, despite the media hype. I watched the games up to, and including the final. Following the final, my main interest will be on the GAA club scene. Rugby will never have the following enjoyed by the Gaelic fraternity.

I think Irish rugby is on a roll. It has broken through. France 2023, was it's Italia '90 moment imho. People like me, who had never watched rugby really- watched rugby. And became interested. Interesting times ahead for the GAA. Watching the Limerick county final (Na Piarsaigh V Patrickswell) at an empty Gaelic grounds was not a good look imho. Not having the Munster hurling championship on RTE free to air was madness too. The GAA Hq, have become a little bit out of touch imho. Anyway, interesting times ahead for GAA and Irish rugby and FAI too.

Spot on.

Rob should perhaps drop into the shanty towns and see exactly how well they are getting on. ANC has lots of billionaires, which is progress maybe.

These lads should stick to the ball and stop talking nonsense.
