I think people sometimes make the mistake in assuming population should translate to success, and I see that been pointed at Kildare and Meath a lot - because of their population increase over the last 10 years or so. But how many of those people who move their end up getting involved in GAA? It would be interested to see how many actual playing members each country has. Take Clonee in Meath for example, right on the Dublin border - now by no means has it a massive GAA heritage but the GAA club that was St Paul's has essentially been pushed out of existence despite a big population growth in the area. The GAA grounds were upped and move to the far side of Dunboyne when the M3 was being built, and as far as I am aware they no longer field a team as of 2024 due to lack of interest. A lot of people who moved to Clonee were probably either coming out of Dublin, or just foreign nationals. And any of the Dublin people who moved out would just go play for Erin Go Bragh who are 5 mins down the road in Little Pace (Dublin) Despite big population growth in Navan, the traditionally big club there Navan O'Mahony's haven't had any success recently, in fact they were relegated from senior and now play Intermediate football. There's clearly an influx of people coming to Meath and Kildare because of their proximity to Dublin, but if they're not getting involved - using population as a yardstick is pointless. The GAA country boards needs to do more to get people playing, and getting people involved. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 246 - 17/04/2024 10:59:11 2538536 Link 2 |
No direct relationship between population and success - but as a matter of fairness, each representative team should broadly represent a similar head count (like each Dáil TD).

Connacht and Munster are the semi-final stages this weekend. Galway, Clare and Kerry are the clear favourites from their league performances. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8242 - 20/04/2024 07:34:45 2539160 Link 0 |
Can you imaging shouting " Come on Sligo/Leitrim/North Roscommon/South Donegal".......?

Did Derry shoot their lot for the sake of beating Dublin in a league final? realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8670 - 20/04/2024 19:57:06 2539313 Link 0 |
Galway given a fright by Sligo. Kerry taking the lead in the 50th minute. Donegal beating Derry. A competitive day for the provincial championships. Clare have qualified for the All-Ireland series. Down who finished above Clare in Division 3 will have to make the Ulster final to knockout Westmeath. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8242 - 20/04/2024 20:04:35 2539319 Link 0 |
I think Derry will be happy enough…. Nice rest now instead of 2 more battles in Ulster which would surely tire them out….. All Ireland firmly on their mind

Ulster championship is no use to Derry - teams need to peak too early - Derry better off out of it

I don't think we did. Against Donegal there was lots of factors leading to that defeat. Certainly a hangover from the league final was an aspect, Donegal were excellent and tactically superb, the fly keeper was obviously being targeted yet we failed to adapt in game, we looked disinterested and arrogant feeling like we just had to turn up at 80 or 90%. Make no mistake that is a very damaging defeat mentally. To be turned over like that in your own back yard. It also leaves us as third seeds for the round robin(although granted we will hope to draw Dublin so we can avoid them at a later stage). Mickey was brought in to win Sam. That is the aim but big question marks after that today. Jazzyjeff (Derry) - Posts: 210 - 20/04/2024 21:13:32 2539360 Link 0 |
Did Kerry and Galway struggle because there was so little on the line? I wouldn't want the Prov Champps to be "competitive" for that reason.

I doubt they're that happy at all.

Derry's hopes of 3 in a row Ulsters are over. 97Cavans (Cavan) - Posts: 375 - 20/04/2024 21:44:52 2539390 Link 1 |
We can talk about structures, split seasons, condensed calendars all we like but if one of the favourites for the all Ireland is "happy enough" after being given a hiding in front of their own fans then the championship is in even more of a dire strait than I thought.

That match was to be their main battle and failed by a good bit plus they had a 4 week break going into that match Ulster championship is no use to Derry - teams need to peak too early - Derry better off out of it points50swiththeargyllsonthewrongfeet (Tyrone) 1st seeds if better than 3rd seed i'll be surprised if any 3rd seed reaches the All Ireland final never mind winning the All Ireland Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3474 - 21/04/2024 03:21:08 2539427 Link 0 |
That's the whole problem with this type of Championship…. No jeopardy whatsoever.. Do you think Derry would have continued making the same mistakes over and over again and taken Christy McKague off if their championship future was on the line…. Not likely.. Straight knockout is the only way to win a championship

There is jeopardy in the Munster Hurling Championship. There is jeopardy of sorts in Allianz Football Division 1 where everyone is battling to retain Division 1 status at least. The lack of jeopardy or lack of a meaningful carrot for winning a provincial championship is concerning provincial councils. There answer is for provincial winners to go direct to the quarter-finals. Back on the field of play, hoping for a good contest between Mayo and Roscommon. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8242 - 21/04/2024 12:30:20 2539508 Link 0 |
provincial councils aren't going to be concerned as long as they get close to 20k to watch Kerry v Cork,Derry v Donegal and Mayo v Roscommon and all are starting their strongest teams.

Are you for real? You think Kerry beating a poor Cork in 2nd gear and one other team every year means they deserve to make quarter final. We all know only Ulster champions deserve a better reward. Leinster & Munster is a joke whilst Mayo, Galway, Rossies are great, there's imbalance in structure in Connacht. Scrape the other three provinces and make it a Southern 8 team championship section. Ulster remains with best 8. You could still have Leinster, Munster & Connacht finals plus one extra match as the four quarter finals of Southern Section. Champions of both South & North(Ulster champions) make semi finals. Rest of teams battle it out in combo of back door and knockout edged games. League could be used for seeding and home advantage. System would produce epic meaningful games every step of the way. shaggykev (Donegal) - Posts: 286 - 21/04/2024 16:30:45 2539548 Link 0 |
