listen here you, on your bike..if HS had proper scrutiny, the photo could have been changed, my post heading edited to simply "RIP Jimmy Cooney" and I wouldn't have been cast as the Tom Smith as you call it..I certain ly didn't want the attention of of pointing out something so obvious and sensitive at a sad time..reply all you like but your bang out of order turning this on me..proper governance of posts and photos would have saved you taking a pop at me..Good luck..

Loughnane should never have agreed to a replay, in his comments after the match. The Refs decision is always Final. Anyway RIP to Jimmy and sincere sympathy to all his Family

Don't believe Ger offered a replay there was a meeting on the Sunday to review this but a very well known Commentator who liked Dog racing was in Waterford on the Saturday night and he was emphatic that there was going to be a replay it was already a done deal Clare the real losers but enough said about it now it was genuine mistake RIP to Jimmy Cooney clooney (Clare) - Posts: 960 - 03/08/2023 13:07:35 2498838 Link 2 |

While I agree Clare would have gone onto win the game as they had weathered most of the Offaly comeback there are a few things with this post. 1. Barry Murphy was out under the Hogan Stand ushered out by Kevin Martin not through on goal. (pedantic I know) 2. There should never have been a replay. Offaly had the first game won and then Clare were given a phantom free to draw the first game. He never even told the players what the free was for just waved them away tonorio (Offaly) - Posts: 609 - 03/08/2023 17:23:19 2498923 Link 1 |

Clare can legitimately claim they were the best team in the country in 1998..I will go as far ad to say that team was the most consistent team i seen since the Kilkenny team of 1982/83 as in just unbeatable during those years..I will say that Waterford probably were unfortunately there in 1998 too...that Waterford team were fierce unlucky in their first maiden year as such..the Colin Lynch/Tony Browne incident defined 1998 i think..Clare got the break in the replay but ultimately cost them with Lynch suspended..Waterford with Tony Browne available at his peak personally i think would have been unbeatable in 1998..Offaly picked up the slack after all else that happened in 1998..Waterford were the real hard luck story of 1998 I say..beginning of a great era where they were really unfortunate..you need a bit of luck too..Waterford never had it.. If Jimmy's passing had any positive, perhaps it was bringing Offaly back into GAA conversation for half a week or so.

There had to be a replay, the match was blown early. Simple as. They should have corrected the error there and then though, never mind taking him off the pitch. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1257 - 08/08/2023 11:50:03 2499498 Link 1 |
Thats a very fair post indeed it was a great time for hurling then as well as the big 3 you had Offaly { what a fabulous team they were at that time} Limerick Clare & Galway & Wexford all contenders for All Irelands we in Clare might have got a bit of luck in 95 to beat Offaly and of course Limerick were very unlucky in 2 Finals

Wry true Clooney. A great time for neutrals in the 1990's. Hopefully we can see Clare, Offaly, Waterford, Galway, and Wexford contest at the higher levels again

Heh heh, good one!! Spot the deliberate idiocy line is it? Galway have a higher 'world ranking' now than they had 25 years ago. Because some Offaly and Clare posters have a doting attachment to the 90s, some of them seem to mistakenly think that Galway had a contending side in that era, when they didn't for the main part. Hopefully we can indeed see Offaly and Galway contest at the 'higher levels' again, but sadly Galway are 'more eligible' to play Leinster championship than Offaly these days, after being 'welcomed' into the province at all levels now. We can only try to get back to Leinster, but it will take a while. I would like to see a greater spread of counties compete for provincial and national success.
