Another Selfish Mistake

The football quarter-finals in Croke Park is no surprise. They seem to have taken the approach to spread the neutral games around provincial grounds. Announcing Croke Park this week is drip feeding the information out there.

In 2001 the quarter finals were around the country. That was the first year there were ever quarter finals, from 2002 on they were in Croker, with a few replay exceptions.

Corporate and Premium tickets are sold on the basis that they'll be in Croker

I researched this and it said that in 2001 the quarters were played in other venues because the Hogan stand was only 1 tier high. This doesn't make sense as they held the semi finals there a few weeks later.
On another note I remember going to the museum as a boy in 2001 and they would let you go take a look at the stadium. It wasn't a stadium tour, you could just wander around it yourself. I have a photo of me sitting in the old temporary Cusack dug outs.

I was referring to behaviour moreso than numbers.

They tend to travel in big numbers but I've been to games involving every county in Ireland, and by far there are 3 counties who's fans lower the tone more than the rest. Armagh are one of those 3.

Replying To OLS2:  "The all football Ireland quarter finals being moved to Croke Park is another farce beyond belief.
In the tailteann cup the quarter finals were in the home venues of the teams that topped the groups (yes, it's arguable that was the correct option considering it's a second tier competition and it's unlikely that you could get a big crowd in croke park for the likes of Antrim Vs Carlow etc.)
Why was there a small period of time that the official GAA website had Celtic Park listed as the venue for Derry's quarter final?
Now it's being played in croke park?
Was one of the main perks of topping the group not too have your quarter final at home?
It's another selfish action but also a stupid one by the GAA.
There is a current problem in the promoting the game for the youth, a sold out all Ireland quarter final in Celtic Park, Athletic Grounds and Fitzgerald stadium would have all been spectacles. It's a spit in the face to football fans. Armagh having arguably the best support in the country home and away; it would have been a brilliant novelty and reward for the Armagh team and also the fans to have a quarter final at home. As for Derry it would have been another step forward to promoting the game in the City; Celtic park would have been jammed. As for Kerry they only care about the final I suppose."
Nope. The biggest games on the biggest days should be in Croke Park.

Replying To BarneyGrant:  "Football quarter finals were always going to be in CP and that's the wish of all counties I would imagine, given that two of the remaining ones even wanted to play there last week!

Of course there will be usual Dublin at home thing, but no one from Dublin is objecting to Dublin travelling to Limerick to play in the hurling quarter final against Clare who chose it to play Limerick themselves in Munster final. And is virtually home game for supporters.

Likewise, Wexford and Galway didn't whinge about Dublin hurlers choosing CP as home pitch in Leinster championship. Nor use it as an excuse.

Teams seriously do not care and if ambitious want to play on the biggest stages, And despite the dog whistling of certain chaps, they couldn't care less about the supporters when it suits them otherwise."
Spot on

Sorry Rossies but the first quarters football finals were introduced in 2001 and 3 of the fixtures were not played in croke park. Kerry v Dublin was played in Thurles and Roscommon played Galway in Castlebar. Meath and Westmeath played in croke park and Derry and I forget who they played were in an ulster venue. If Croke park is filled it is brilliant but if not there is nothing like capacity crowds in provincial venues. The likes of Mayo v Tyrone in Thurles would be class.

Yeah pretty sure that is correct.

Quarter finals were never flagged as home advantage for group winners but it would make it a healthy reward and add more spice to the groups

1. It wasn't a quarter final

2. It was a replay, the drawn game was in Croker.

Tommy Lyons started the crusade of playing the quarters in Croke Park as a "festival of football".

His last point is still true Mick. The QFs weren't played with one team at home.

agree, lots of great ones of course but there always seems to be a larger 'bad' element than any other group of supporters ive seen. think the words 'chip' and 'shoulder' come to mind

Not recently but in the 00s and 10s the direst team off the ball, maybe that fed into the stands

No surprise that the Q finals are in CP. Personally I don't like double headers, atmosphere tends to be poor and you have people arriving during the first game with more leaving during the second game.

I think it would make sense to mote to provincial grounds - I always think of Kerry v Mayo in Limerick 2014 replay (SF) was the best atmosphere I've ever seen.. instead you go to a QF in CP, not full and half the people don't care.

I also think that Pairc Ui Caoimh should be designated for a quarter final. Brilliant stadium that's underused.

When Casement Park is built it would be great to have a quarter final there also.
