Mid-Season All-Star Awards

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now that the provincials are over, who would you have on your All-star team if it were to be picked today? Based on the games I've seen. All on Gaago.ie, btw.

No clear stand-out candidate; no bad keepers so far, and no big blunders. However, Brennan of Dublin and Collins of Cork have really kept their teams in it at vital stages.
1.Sean Brennan.

2. Huw Lawlor: No major stand-out here either, so I'd move Lawlor over, as he's been rock solid all year.
3. Dan Morrissey- Does the man ever put in a bad shift?
4. Barry Nash: While Hogan of Clare has been really impressive, and could well end up with YHOTY, it's hard to look past Nash. He's coolness personified
5. Diarmuid Byrnes, but it's almost 50-50 with Diarmuid Ryan of Clare. Byrne's scoring prowess swings it for him, even though Ryan knows well where the posts are too.
6. John Conlon: no argument, and close runner for HOTY. Daithi Burke, next in line.
7. Kyle Hayes: When a game is in the melting-pot, this is when we see this man at his best.
8. Noel McGrath
9. Will O'Donoghue
Both Clare lads are well in my running, but Fitz missed the Tipp game, and both were quite subdued by their own standards in the Munster final. O'Donovan of Limk isn't far off either.
10. Ronan Burke: he's been shooting the lights out, and is great under pressure.
11. Lee Chin: his display against Kilkenny was one for the ages; a true warrior.
12. Tom Morrissey: a runner for HOTY also.
13. Aaron Gillane.
14. Pat Horgan. He ousts both Seamus Flanagan and Shane O'Donnell, but of course that may well change before the year is out.
15. Conor Whelan. Again, Shane O'Donnel is in my reckoning here, as is Jake Morris.

So breakdown: Limerick (7); Dublin (2); Clare, Cork, Galway, Tipp, Kilkenny, and Wexford one each.

REMEMBER: These are individual awards, and not team awards.

Very hard to pick the football ones so far. So many games in it's been hard to see who's doing well. I'm going to go off what I've seen but definitely not gonna cover everyone.

1. Connor Carroll
2. Jack Coyne
3. Seán Kelly
4. Conor McCluskey
5. Cillian McDaid
6. John Daly
7. Brian Stack
8. Connor Glass
9. Matthew Ruane
10. Ciarán Murtagh
11. Matthew Tierney
12. Ryan O'Donoghue
13. Darren McCurry
14. Sam Mulroy
15. Ben O'Carroll

Strong Connacht representation but it makes sense with all 3 top of their groups and the top 3 in the league.

4 Galway, 4 Ros, 3 Mayo, 2 Derry, 1 Tyrone 1 Louth

You're missing POTY McGuigan

Since it is 22 years since our last All Star, the Rossies would be very happy with four.
There is a guy down in Kerry that you might have a look at also!
With a lot of matches this year, I hope the judges keep in mind the performances over the entire year and not just the All Irelamd final and semi finals.

All stars on current form (don't think they'll end up even close to this though)
1. Sean Brennan
2. Mikey Butler
3. Huw Lawlor
4. Barry Nash
5.Diarmuid Ryan
6. Daithi Burke
7. Kyle Hayes
8. William O'Donoghue
9. Noel McGrath
10. Tom Morrissey
11. Tony Kelly
12. Donal Burke
13. Conor Whelan
14. Aaron Gillane
15. Eoin Cody
Cathal Barett, Jake Morris, Joseph Cooney, Ronan Maher, Patrick Horgan, Patrick Collins, Ciaran Joyce, John Conlon could all make strong cases and I don't expect Sean Brennan, Donal Burke to be long enough in the championship in two weeks time to get one but both are having super years

5 of the front runners for hurler of the year in my opinion are Tom M, Gillane, D Ryan, J Conlon and Jake Morris. If you dont have them then you may go back to sleep.
I'm almost certain Morris is top scorer from play in league and cship (def in league) despite playing less games than most of the forwards mentioned. He's not the finished article but no one can argue that he isnt an all star to this point. Did Whelan touch the ball more than once against Dublin?

Morris is an excellent hurler, but he got 60% of his scores this year in one game, if one game is how you judge players...

I dont think club hurling counts and I didnt realise Ronan Burke transferred to the forwards for Turlough either.

Clifford was close for me but that'd be a boring pick.

McGuigan completely slipped my mind but he should definitely be in there.

He got 2-4, 3 points and 4 points. So he done nothing against Limerick? He scored more goals in the NHL than almost every county. Have you watched many Tipp games this year?
Hes scored more in his first 90 mins of cship hurling this year than Joe got from play when he got HOTY -if thats the route you want to go down!

I might be biased but surely Brian Stack has to make it ahead of James McCarthy based on this years performances
