A great servant and top class player at his peak. Suffered terrible injuries. Two broken legs and a cruciate knee that I am sure is a contributor to his decision. All the best to him and I am sure we will see lots of him with his club for a while.

what a player indeed he was, sad thing is and I have found this over the years, when the so called knowledgeable GAA people outside his own county discuss hurling in years to come, as he was not an All Ireland winnner they will not really remember him and and will stupidly say, "cant remember him now he mustnt have been that good" or along that line...I for one think he was one of the best Waterford produced, up there with Tony Browne, Paul Flynn, John Mullane, Ken McGrath and go back further, Liam Power and Kieran Delahunty etc... and numerous others too many to mention here...

Yes that is right. They have given great players to Waterford over the years. Flynn, Hartley, Frampton, Sullivans , Coughlan, Mahonys and many others. For some reason I feel never as many as you would expect at the same time. Not for their success. Now mind you the team is much more reflective of hurling through the county. The West awoke. If Mount Sion were on top like the gunners they would expect to have 12 on the team and did. Many not to standard either at the time.

unfortunately or not, that is true. Looking at Joe on Laochra Gael last week couldnt help but notice the whole hour long program was all leading to the climax of that all ireland win. In hurling winning the all ireland is all that counts really. There is no arguing that. Youd feel for the waterford lads as they are the only hurling county left without an all ireland in modern times.
