I agree that's it not all to do with population size. It's just one of many factors. One of the main points I was making was that Dublin have always been a football powerhouse and didn't say its the biggest sport in Dublin but there is a proud history there. Dublin would of won all irelands without the financial backing they've got but the number of consecutive titles is something that can be disputed. They have already won 4 and look likely to make that 5 and I can't see them not winning at least 3 of the next 5 and that's been generous to other counties.

I wouldn't say North County Dublin is a wasteland in club football. Round Towers in Lusk, Skerries Harps are good clubs. The Northside of Dublin City has many very strong clubs: Vincents, Fianna, Ballymun, Raheny, etc. St Vincents won the All-Ireland club championship in 2008 and 2014. The North inner city is the area that needs development. But the north county Dublin in general is very strong. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1974 - 13/08/2019 13:57:50 2225124 Link 7 |
But I would ask you how you would explain the fact that in your own county, north county Dublin is almost a wasteland in terms of club football Obviously club football is not your strong point either. Skerries Harps, Fingallians and St Maurs all play in AFL1 and those clubs are thriving in North County Dublin thanks to those armies of volunteers. bubba83 (Dublin) - Posts: 333 - 13/08/2019 14:10:32 2225132 Link 0 |
It was a rubbish analogy. Accept it.

It's not really that impressive out of a population of circa 300k

How strong would you like it to be? If it was any stronger you'd be having an issue with that too.

Funny enough by pulling a couple of clubs from the population centres in the north of the county, you are reinforcing what I'm trying to say. And you can't deflect by pulling in the north inner city. I expect you know I was talking about clubs like Garristown, Man O War, Wild Geese, Clann Mhuire, Ballyboughal and are choosing to ignore it because it doesn't suit your argument. Do you have any thoughts on why clubs like those above aren't competing with the huge clubs from the city? Greenfield (Meath) - Posts: 522 - 13/08/2019 14:39:09 2225145 Link 0 |
Yeah but it's all relative isn't it? "Your lot" are a province to Carlow. "Your lot" are a province to Leitrim. Cork is a province to Louth and so on. Do you see where this is going? Munster would be more competitive if you removed Kerry, Connaught if you removed Galway and Mayo and Ulster if you removed Donegal and Tyrone. So your point about the AI series being more competitive if you removed Dublin is moot. Same for Kerry in the 80s, Kilkenny in the 00s. The objective should be to raise the bar not to lower it to the LCD which is what you are proposing. Dublin's demise will come and then you can whinge about Kerry or Cork or whoever picks up the crown but until then, enjoy the football because when Dublin go we could be left with a less entertaining lateral hand passing brand of football that could see attendances collapse further and you'll have no Dublin team to blame then.

I agree with some points you make here but there won't be a Dublin demise. The foundations put in place in 2005 with the financial backing Dublin have and will receive in the future make a demise impossible. Playing numbers are likely to continue to increase in the capital for the foreseeable future and because of this Dublin will always be competing for all ireland titles. We just hope they have other teams in years to come that can actually compete with them.

Oh would you stop. Even during your so called dark days you were still making provincial finals and all Ireland semi finals every other year. You Dubs have never known a true period of darkness. And I'll say it again. You won't demise. Stop lying to yourself. You won't stop winning the provincial and even if there is a freak loss you'll probably win the All-Ireland through the back door anyway. And you'll win the next 10 Leinsters after regardless. This Dublin team till the day you die won't demise and time will prove me right like it has for years now. Next year I'll still be right, and the year after and so on. Jayysus, I'd like to think I'll survive the playing days of this Dublin team at least given their average age is 26. I know you can tell the future Jack but are you really telling me I've only 5 or 6 years left in me?

They always have competed for titles. Most eastern and most urban centre populations will continue to increase. "Commuter belt" counties such as Meath, Wicklow, Kildare, Louth will benefit as much as any, no? Meath's population is almost 200,000 and growing rapidly. They're searching for a panel of 30 senior footballers, not a battalion in the Irish army. I should imagine that the finances will change as there has been so much whinging. If other counties decide then there will be more games outside Croker, as long as the venues can accommodate the fans then that's no problem. Apart from the 00s they Dublin have been in a final every decade since 1910s. That's not going to change and it won't change for the likes of Kerry either.

Swap the word Kerry for Dublin in that piece and the same holds true, no? Kerry have made finals in every decade, dominating some. There is zero evidence to point to a never-ending cycle of Dublin wins. We have had 5 years of Kerry dominance at minor. Their senior team is reaping the rewards making a league final, winning a Munster title and now romping through the AI series to a final. Cork may win both minor and U20 titles. Their seniors will reap the rewards. The evidence that Dublin will dominate for eternity simply isn't there. We're not sweeping the boards, are we?

I didn't mean that. Let's say you are a dub fan in his 50's or 60's. Till the day you die I believe Dublin won't demise and will be winning leinster every year and probably 8/10 AI's. That's assuming Dublin isn't split in that time and that the GAA continue to give you the magic money sponge.

Well, if you check it out you'll see that in this area cricket is very popular. You have The Hills, Man O'War, North County Cricket club. I'm assuming that's because Garristown was once a garrison town. But to say the entire north county is a wasteland is simply untrue. O'Dwyers in Balbriggan is a thriving club. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1974 - 13/08/2019 18:51:20 2225237 Link 7 |
