As someone who has only been to Navan once and that was very much a get in and get out visit, can I ask the Meath posters on here some advice about the best waterholes to frequent for Saturday? Any other advice about getting to the ground and anything else of relevance would be greatly appreciated too! TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 29/07/2019 11:15:53 2218056 Link 3 |
I'm torn between the fact that it's great to be getting the experience of playing Kerry and hating that ultimately it's a meaningless game for us. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 29/07/2019 11:47:47 2218086 Link 0 |
Agreed re Super 8's - it just hasn't worked. Personally I think summer competitions in Gaelic Games are just not suited to League type structures its ingrained in the sport for it to be a knock out competition.

What I should have added is that we can take the one thing that worked really well in the Super 8s - big games at provincial venues and make sure in future any Q-finals are played in towns like Killarney, Castlebar where there is a real sense of occasion around the fixture

I'd be amazed if Kerry don't win but they do need to guard against complacency. It isn't totally outside the realms of possibility that Mayo beat Donegal by a point and Meath beat Kerry by 3 points. In such a scenario Kerry are out. the_walls (Mayo) - Posts: 495 - 29/07/2019 12:56:25 2218152 Link 1 |
Kerry will be well aware of that possibility and I think they will field a strong team. If they win well there is a good chance that they will win the group and have 8 days to the next game. That has to be the aim. I'd be surprised if there is complacency. I can't make this one myself, I wish I could.

Care to expand on that or is just a throw away flippant comment?

Kerry will win this one handy by whatever they like. Meath are no where near the level required to handle their forwards. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 29/07/2019 14:53:30 2218240 Link 2 |
There's no doubt that top teams meeting at big provincial grounds during the summer months creates a huge atmosphere and sense of occasion but personally for me some of it is lost by the fact that they are not KO games. I think group stages fit in nicely at the start of a competition but throwing them in for the sake of it when 33 teams become 8 doesn't do it for me. Anyway that aside, I know Kerry will be very much up for this game on Sunday, I'd imagine they will be aiming for a win by a large margin so we have to do our best to counter that and try to finish on a high. Do you think many Kerry fans will travel, it's a long spin up. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 29/07/2019 16:53:06 2218333 Link 0 |
Is it an all Ireland final? No? Then no chance hahaha

And will lilypad be heading up the road to watch the mighty kingdom on Saturday?

There are any amount of pubs in navan hermit with some great gaa ones included. Ryan's on trimgate st is the closest to the ground and is probably your best bet as it has a great atmosphere on match day and should be packed. The central down the street is also a great pub while if you fancy walking a bit further the old beggys will be bouncing on Saturday night. Be careful of where you park as iv seen car after car after car being clamped on match day, shameful really but they see it as a money making opportunity. Depends on which way your coming but if your travelling up the m7 and then heading for edenderry and onto trim you'll be coming in the trim road and your best bet for parking will be the fair green which leaves you with a 2 minute walk through the church and onto trimgate st. Enjoy the day

Can't beat some local knowledge thanks very much Northsidegael. I think we might stay in Dublin and get to and from Navan by the express bus Bus Eireann runs so we can enjoy a few pints before and after the games. As for the traveling contingent from Kerry, I'd say they'll be a decent few. Great buzz around this young team and the novelty of the venue should entice a couple of thousand to come. There were plenty of us in Clones last year. TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 29/07/2019 19:49:48 2218416 Link 4 |
This is probably the last championship game in the old pair tailteann before redevelopment commences so hoping for a good winning farewell to the old lady. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 30/07/2019 20:33:21 2218872 Link 0 |
Judging by how poor Meath have been in the championship this could be a big win for Kerry. They wont want to lose momentum. It will be key for them going forward. daytona11 (Kildare) - Posts: 4012 - 30/07/2019 21:08:06 2218882 Link 1 |

I fear a hiding for meath in this one. Kerry will want to get the game tidied up early to clear their path to the final and could tag on a big score on meath. tulachmhór (Offaly) - Posts: 145 - 30/07/2019 21:37:13 2218901 Link 1 |
Fitzsimons is a great bar only down the road from Pairc Tailteann. I might venture over and watch this match myself.
