Donegal V Mayo

(Oldest Posts First)

Hope you are not panicking too much about your trip to Castlebar!

It should be a full house as we are probably the 2 best supported counties in Ireland.

Honestly I cant see Donegal losing. Mayo have a very poor record at home in recent years. We were very lucky to get through qualifiers and to final round of super 8's given all our injuries to key men. Last Sunday we played without Keith Higgins, Paddy Durcan, Matthew Ruane, Diarmuid O'Connor and Tom Parsons. Lee Keegan and Aidan O'Shea are also carrying knocks after 5 weeks without a break. Paddy Durcan should be back for the next day , maybe Higgins but I think the game will come too soon for the others. Stephen Rochfords knowledge of every mayo player is also a massive factor.

Donegal by 2/3. Mayo would need to find a massive performance to beat Donegal who are in excellent shape. Donegal can probably hide the injuries better than Mayo as they've shown the squad is fresh; missing 3 first team defenders against Kerry and still doing a job against top opposition.

If there's any team who can pull a performance out of nowhere though, it is Mayo. It's a one off game to book a semi final place. They have big game players and massive experience. Expect them to really deliver but hoping it won't be enough.

The ref will be under massive pressure with the game being in Mayo, Mayo fans are raucous and passionate. Won't be an easy job.

When the groups were finalised I had this pencilled as an absolute stormer of a match with the thinking being that mayo would be going into this game on 4 points, donegal on 2 and Kerry having to travel to meath on 2 points also. I was almost expecting high drama with three of the teams ending up on 4 points.

Now it feels rather damp and I cant see past a comfortable donegal win even if the mayo lads do get their few injuries back.

I have a very soft spot for mayo as they have provided excellent entertainment over the years but this seems like the end of the road. I know it's been said before but surely this is a bridge too far. Donegal will also be much more equipped to deal with the boys in blue in the final also. I'd hate to see mayos final act should they upset donegal to be a harsh beating against the dubs in an ai final after their recent bravery.

Theres something about this donegal team that will be extremely hard to beat. Steel, organisation and quality players in all key positions.

I am really looking forward to this north west derby. Two very good teams. Donegal are a team on the up for sure. As for Mayo there is no disputing the ability that's there when they put in a big performance. A lot depends on the injury situation for both sides. With full strength teams I think Donegal will do it, but only just.

Donegal the form team at the moment and should win it with plenty to spare on present form. It will be either an easy win for Donegal by a large margin or in a tight game that goes down to the wire Mayo might just get a one point victory. Looks like Donegal by a large margin
