Following a bizarre own point in Westmeath league final I was wondering what some of the more unusual happenings were that have happened during a match. I think there was one a few years ago in a Connacht rugby game where the ball got blown back between the posts after it was kicked through for a score due to the strong wind. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 08/07/2019 17:11:38 2208004 Link 0 |
Enon Gavin from Roscommon hung out of the crossbar and broke it in the 1992 Connacht final against Mayo. Took them 7 minutes to put up a new one. Grey_Wolf (Leitrim) - Posts: 236 - 08/07/2019 18:09:30 2208038 Link 0 |
Did I hear the crossbar broke in Castlebar on 2 occasions?

Seem to remember a goalkeeper sending his kick-out (into the wind) over his own end-line for a 45, in recent years.

Kerry goalie did that 2 years ago, don't recall him being able to use wind as an excuse!

Yes. I think it broke in the 1962 final as well. Which is why they were ready with a spare one in 1992. I wonder do all county grounds keep a spare one just in case... Grey_Wolf (Leitrim) - Posts: 236 - 08/07/2019 20:08:32 2208109 Link 0 |
Kerry against Tipp in the mid 90s I think. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13777 - 08/07/2019 20:15:47 2208114 Link 5 |
Given the week that's in it, I'd have to suggest Barney Rock's goal at the beginning of extra time in the Dublin v Cork NFL quarter final of 1987. Though Dublin were on the pitch, Cork were not, they were already on their way to Heston Station I believe. The ref started extra time and Barney scored into the old Canal End goal. Ref blew the whistle after that. :) CornAghais91 (Dublin) - Posts: 126 - 08/07/2019 20:18:08 2208115 Link 2 |

I would have considered Mayo's two own goals in the 2016 All-Ireland as pretty bizarre. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1989 - 08/07/2019 21:11:21 2208161 Link 4 |

In a Kildare county final a lad took a penalty, the keeper saved it and when the ball came back out at him hard & fast he headed it first time over the bar. My memory is letting me down, I can't remember who it was. I'm thinking a Leixlip man but might be wrong. Someone else from Kildare might remember. He got fierce abuse from some traditionalists for scoring a point using a soccer skill the poor lad ! I've never seen it again that's for sure.
