Conor Cox Kerry Mistake

Replying To Aibrean:  "When is Barry 'going to be good'? When did he last have a good game? He has no ball control and doesn't seem to be able to make those surging straight line solo runs any more. Kerry have a huge problem at midfield. Barry may be injured for next Sunday btw."
Didn't know he was injured. I'd agree he went backwards last year after initially being very good when he came in the previous year but that sophomore slump is pretty common with young players. He does need to protect the football better and his distribution isn't always great but he is a very good athlete and the potential is there for him to be a very effective player. Playing in that midfield is a thankless job at the moment not only does he not have a settled partner but we are hopeless on the breaking ball.

I'm not willing to write off a player of his age after one below par season. We seem to expect miracles from lads straight away in kerry, I don't remember Tomas O'Se or Paul Galvin being stars when they came in, Marc O'Se got several right roasting at corner back when he was starting out and the talk was that he was there because of nepotism, never mind the booing of Declan O'Sullivan in that Munster final replay when he was only 23 and trying to find his way in the team!

Something in the Roscommon air brings out the best in people.Afer all,Dermot Earley was born in Mayo and would have played for Mayo minors. But they never asked him.

Was he not playing underage for Glaveys? Maybe not born but bred in Gorthaganny.

Born in Castlebar but reared in Gorthaganny Co. Roscommon, by the Mayo border. Borders Brackloon on the Mayo side a few miles from Ballyhaunis. That's my hometown, and Keith Higgins', but I was fairly hopeless at football!

He can go back if he wished can't he though. I'm thinking of the Seanie Johnson County Hokey Pokey a few years back.

Think he's still playing his club football in Kerry.

It's a curious one Clon. I don't ever remember hearing much clamour for him to be included and he was in and out of the panel for a couple of years. The chance with Roscommon seems to have brought out the best in him. On current form he would probably start for Kerry given that Paul Geaney and particularly JOD seem to have recurring injuries. Roscommon seem to play through him and I wonder would he be as effective in kerry with Clifford now very much the main man? We will never know.

Peculiar that guys like Barry John Keane and Jack Savage were in the team in recent years and a guy with this ability couldn't get on the panel.

As for a return to Kerry I don't think that would be right, he should stay where he is now. It would leave a very sour taste if he did a u turn, not that there is any indication whatsoever that that is in his thinking.

It's a funny one Gerry how they let him slip tru , I never heard of him either til the league game against Dublin and he was stand out against us , he's their main man his free at the end against the wind was ridiculous. He's that Kerry class in him no doubt. His point in the first half is point of the season and it won't be bet he was on the end line.

Sure that's like saying most Meath are from cavan, louth or Diblin because there is no maternity hospital in Meath anymore. Same country wide, i imagine, westmeath, wicklow, monaghan ....

Like we have all said our problems lie elsewhere.

Conor is having a great year so far and I wish him well and I'd love to see him win an allstar .

Roscommon are in with Dublin now in group 2 and will have to play them in game 2 of the super 8s at a neutral venue probably at o'Connor park tullamore, that stadium should be well able to hold the 16,000 dublin fans and 15-20,000 Roscommon fans.

The lack of opportunity with Kerry could of been the catalyst for his current form. "I'll show them" mentality.
While he's in tremendous form, I'll reserve judgement. The football championship has had its share of 1 season wonders.

He was only born in Castlebar. Was education, grew up in and kick his first football in Roscommon. His Dad that formed the Glaveys club was a Mayo man just like Conor Cox's dad is rossie.

I never new Peadar was a Mayo man, I think he was a teacher. I was only talking to my Dad about Paul Earley yesterday cos I'd seen him around Maynooth a few times. Paul went to school in Ballyhaunis and was a classy player for a great Community School team in the late 70s. Ian Daly and some other Roscommon players from different age grades went to the same school. Proud Roscommon men.
