Greatest GAA Comeback Of All Time???

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The first gaa game I have any real memory of is the 1970 Leinster final, when Meath played Offaly.
It was the year championship matches were played over 80 mins.

Offaly blitzed Meath in the first half and went in winning by 4-7 to 0-9, 10 points clear.

In the second half Meath staged their hallmark fightback and with time almost up we're winning by 3 points only for Offaly to score a goal. However with nearly the last kick of the ball Meath pointed and won the game.

Final score was Meath 2-22 Offaly 5-12.

If ever a game captured a young boys imagination and started a life long passion following his team, well that was it for me.

49 years later I can still remember my dad holding me up on his shoulders after the game to see the players come off the pitch.

He passed away whilst we were at another Meath game later in the 90's but that day in 1970 will stay with me forever.

Meath have a great tradition of comebacks. I have list below of the best 9 Meath comebacks ever. But the greatest comeback in a championship match in Croke Park or in a final ever has to be 1970 Meath v Offaly leinster final. When the great Meath teams of 1960s in it final swansong faced the up and coming great Offaly team of the1970s.

1 1970 Meath v Offaly leinster Senior Final.
Meath were ten points down at half time. And Offaly were beating Meath by 11 points well into the second half. Meath won the game by point. The scoreline was extraordinary also.
Meath 5 - 12 Offaly 2 - 22.
The scoreline alone is the biggest in a provincial final ever.

2 1991 Meath v Dublin First Round leinster Senior Championship
The 4 game saga with Dublin. In 3 of the 4 games Meath were 5 points down well into second half. In the fourth game Meath were 6 points down with 15 mins to go and Dublin got a penalty. Well the rest is history. As Meath wud end up scoring one of most famous goals ever in the dying seconds , followed by David Beggy which seals the victory for Meath. Dublin should have won all 4 games. But somehow Meath drew the 3 matchs and won the final fourth game.

3 1996 Meath v Mayo All Ireland Final senior final.and replay.
In both games with 15 mins to go Meath were losing by 6 points to Mayo. Meath scored 6 points in a row to draw the first game and 1 - 3 to win the replay in the final stages of both games.

4 1997 Kildare v Meath leinster Championship Senior Semi final Replay.
.While it wasnt not a massive comeback. But it was one of the best individual comebacks. Meath were 5 points down in the second game in the second half of extra time. Jody Devine is brought of the bench and scores pretty much 4 massive long range points from play to equalise the game, and the game is drawn after Niall Buckley point.. And a third game follows which Meath win.

5 2000 Meath v kerry league div 1 senior semi final.
Kerry were 9 points ahead of Meath well into the second half. And Meath stage a comeback and win the game with a goal in injury time by John Cullinane. The scoreline was .
Meath 4 - 11 Kerry 1 - 18.

6 2001 Meath v Westmeath leinster senior quater final. Westmeath were 6 points up Meath with around 15 mins to go. Meath stage a comeback and a point from long range Trevour Giles free wins the game in injury time for Meath.

7 2001 Meath v Westmeath All Ireland senior quater final. Westmeath are 9 points ahead of Meath at half time. Meath stage a second half comeback and Ollie Murphy goal in injury time draws the match. Meath win the replay.

8 2002 Meath v louth All Ireland senior qualifier.
Louth were 5 points ahead of Meath just as the game was entering injury time. There was 5 mins injury time. Meath scored a brillant Richie kealy goal in the second minute of injury time. And in dying seconds of injury time Graham Geraghty scores another brillant goal to win the match for Meath. Geraghty got a helicopter after the match to take him to wedding were he was best man.

9 1992 All Ireland minor Final Meath v Armagh.
Finally one of the great underage All Ireland final comebacks. Armagh were winning by 6 points with 10 mins to go. Tevour Giles scored a brillant 25 yard goal to narrow Armaghs lead. In injury time Armagh are winning by 2 points. With seconds to go a Trevor Giles pass sets up Michael Farrelly who scores the winner for Meath in the dying seconds of the game to win the minor All Ireland title for Meath.

That wud be my top 9 Meath comebacks ever but as I said 1970 leinster final were Offaly were 11 points ahead of Meath well.into the second half and Meath go onto to win game by a point is one of the all time great comebacks. Michael Muiritigh and many people also consider it to be one of greatest football games ever play in Croke Park. The scoreline was extraordinary alone.

Replying To Lockjaw:  "I can't remember a specific Donegal game where we staged an unlikely comeback - perhaps the recent league final against Meath. We got off to a pretty bad start but managed to get back into it and win.

It's one of the great things about sport though. A team can be dead and buried, or so it would seem, and they still find a way. The recent Champions League semi finals are a perfect example. Momentum is a powerful thing in sport. When Liverpool upped the ante, even a team as good as Barcelona couldn't stem the tide. Perhaps the best player ever to play the game, Messi was powerless and ended the game with a dazed look on his face."
Actually what I am I on about?!?

2014 I think it's fair to say most people expected Dublin to give us an unmerciful walloping especially after the start they made. Flynn, Connolly and even Philly were arrowing over points from all sorts of crazy distances.

But we crept back into it slowly but surely and Ryan McHugh's goals either side of half time put the game on its head.

Furlong, a game often overlooked is the 1991 semi final against Roscommon.

It felt Roscommon were always in control and going to win until they decided to bring Paul Early back towards midfield, and up to then he was causing all sorts of problems in attack.

I think Meath came back from 5 points down late in the game and kicked 6 points in a row to scrape through.

Just to add another two comebacks

Meath V Roscommon 1991 All Ireland senior semi final.
Roscommon were 6 points up with less then 15 mins to go. And Brian Stafford having the game of his life scored point after point in the last ten minutes to win the game for Meath by a point.
The score was 0 - 15 to Meath 1 - 11 Roscommon.

And finally it possibly could have been greatest comeback in an All Ireland final ever. It wasnt a comeback but it was so close to being the best comeback ever.

1991 Meath V Down All Ireland senior Final
Down were leading Meath by 11 points well into the second half. Colm O Rourke who had pneumonia came of the bench and started a Meath comeback. Just as the game hits 69 mins Meath had narrowed Downs 11 point lead to 2 points. But the referee gave no injury time and blew up on 70th min , which was unusual . And if injury time was given, even 2 or 3 mins , Meath drawn the match was a real possibility, seen they had 6 comebacks in the championship in that year 4 v Dublin , 1 v Wicklow , 1 v Roscommon.. But it wasnt to be. Down were deserved winners. A great Down team which showed its greatness winning Sam again in 1994. Meath were making comebacks all year , finally their luck run.out. But it was so close to being the best comeback ever.

Just a final follow up note.

The Meath comebacks so many of them led to draws and it seemed to give Meath a massive boost for the following replay. Meath have a great tradition of comebacks which led to draws and Meath having a great record in replays.

For example Meath have only lost 1 replay in the championship in the last 35 years. The only replay Meath lost in the championship in the last 35 years was v Dublin in 2007. Meath have only lost 2 replays in last 50 years in championship v Dublin in 1983 and Dublin in 2007.

In last 35 year in the championship Meath have played 10 replays winning 6 replays drawing 3 replays and losing 1. And Meaths record in replays is outstanding to say the least. In 140 years of the football championship Meath have lost only 4 replays in their history which is quite unique. Meath are definitely the replay and comeback kings of gaelic football.

What about Westmeath's comeback against Meath in 2015?! Some of them comeback's by Meath against Westmeath in 2001 were heartbreaking from a Westmeath point of view! Could be a very exciting Leinster semi final if Westmeath and Meath both win on Sunday.

That was a great comeback by Westmeath. But I was more talking about Meath comebacks. But two great comebacks v Meath were Wexford in 08 when Meath were 8 ahead and Mattie Forde inspired Wexford to victory. And Westmeath in 2015 were 8 ahead at half time and won by 4.
Of course the significance of Westmeath win was Westmeaths first victory over Meath and Westmeath kind of did a Meath to Meath. I felt after that defeat in 2015 to Westmeath and loss to Dublin in 2014 the Meath public lost faith in the county team and it really was only in this spring morale really improved in the county again. And if Meath do play Westmeath in the semis , which is no gurantee, the weekend will tell all . Meath v Westmeath games are always cracking games of football.

Bookies stewards enquiry for that lol. I think we were 10 down early in the 2nd half against Cork in a league semi and we won by 7.
And I think it was in 2000 LFC when we were 9 up on Kildare at half time and they beat us.

'68. It was eight points at half time. However the '56 League final, also V Tipp, was a far greater comeback as they were fourteen points down that day and still won.

In 1962,1975, 1981(14, but that was showing off) 1996 and 2007 Limerick were at least ten points down again Tipperary and on each occasion came back to draw and won all the replays, except '62

a lot of meath people are really hoping we beat carlow and westmeath beat laois so we get a meath v westmeath semi final, meath fans and players have had 4 long years to digest that result which is still talked about , it would be extremly satisfying to get a crack at beating westmeath and revenge for 2015

Down 1-14 Monaghan 1-13 in the 2012 Ulster semi final was an unlikely comeback. Monaghan were leading 0-11 to 0-02 in the first half and were kicking some great points. An Aidan Carr penalty just before half time gave Down hope and Down went on to dominate the second half. A Tommy Freeman goal after a quick free seemed to put pay to Down's chances but they came back to win with Darren O'Hagan getting the winning point. Dick Clerkin missed a late chance to earn Monaghan a replay.
