the qualifers would be a no go, how could a counjty [say wexford organise to bring a team and background team over to new york with less than 2 weeks notice, get lads off work etc for 4/5 days, no chance, money would have nothing to do with it Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 2845 - 05/05/2019 19:17:44 2182003 Link 0 |
That loophole was closed almost 10 years ago after Galway got a scare in New York. If a team were to lose to NY then they would enter a preliminary round of the Qualifiers. If you look at the GAA master planner it has a weekend allocated before Round 1 of the Qualifiers for this purpose: Qualifier Series 01-02.06.2019 (Sat/Sun) Preliminary Round (If Required) A Preliminary Game(s) if required and which may be on an arranged basis, shall be played to reduce the number of teams to sixteen. Though that still has me wondering if NY finally won a match and then lost a Connacht Semi Final, would they enter Round 2 of the qualifiers then? Or are they still not allowed enter and one qualifier team is given a bye to Round 3? You could have a strange situation where you've 17 teams for 16 spots in round 1, but only 15 teams for 16 spots in Round 2. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1646 - 05/05/2019 19:24:13 2182004 Link 3 |
No danger of them winning this match. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2897 - 05/05/2019 20:02:43 2182010 Link 0 |
why not let them in to div 4 in the league? give them 7 home games? Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 2845 - 07/05/2019 19:13:04 2182358 Link 0 |
The pubs of New York couldn't handle that. Not sure about the qualifiers either but New York should be accommodated in some way. Having just come back from it today it's an experience that more than 5 counties should be given and New York need more opportunities to test their capabilities. They have no hope against an all Ireland contender or the div 1 league champions but might have a better chance v lower level teams. If there was a 2 tiered championship they could be put into a 4 team group and given 3 home games in June, where they would have their ringers all there too. I'd be giving them warm up games too. Assuming the season gets properly structured you could give them a game a month from Christmas onwards. January - Previous years B all Ireland champions February - Previous years All Ireland senior champions March - Sigerson Cup winners on St Patrick's day April - Easter Exhibition games - New York v Kilkenny, (best other US city), (Best British region (excl London) May - Connacht prelim round June - weekly tier 2 group game. The team would build up momentum and interest and likely gain more fundraising to develop Gaelic Park, attract players over for a good run at the tier 2 championship. If they progress beyond that, they would have to travel to Ireland for knock out matches Something like that would allow them develop a proper team and brand which would attract more US natives (players and crowds) and more investment. They are at nothing ( competitively speaking) at the minute. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1126 - 08/05/2019 04:12:15 2182403 Link 0 |
With the winters in New York it wouldn't be wise to send a team out for a weekend in January/February with the possibility of the game being called off for snow.

I wouldn't worry about that. Pitch is artificial, trains run right beside it. All it needs to stay open is a bit of salt and/or a bit snow shovelling . Last Sunday there was a man emptying puddles on a rainy day to keep the place right. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1126 - 09/05/2019 03:35:15 2182632 Link 0 |
