Unsung Heroes

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I recently watched back the 2012 All Ireland final, Donegal had many unsung heroes. Anthony Thompson, Rory Kavanagh, Ryan Bradley, Frank McGlynn and Leo McLoone. Who's your county's unsung heroes?

Razor Finnegan and John O Brien from the Louth that reached the Leinster final in 2010.

Used to be Jimmy Mc but that horse has bolted.

I'd go Mick Fitz, just the six winners medals.

Micheal Murphy even though he's a high profile, I think no body really acknowledges the supreme talent he is, pound for pound in with a strong shout for the beat footballer in the country.

Shout out for EBG as well, criminal he wasn't up for young player of the year last year, arguably more effective and impressive then the winner and others nominated.

Sean O Shea I felt was very unsung last year, even though the popular mindset had caught up this year, I said it a few times last year, I thought he was the pick of what was breaking through at Kerry and like EBG, he was as good if not more worthy then the winner and other nominees.

I still say people outside of Dublin don't understand how good Ciaran Kilkenny is, it's great, only really Rochford ever took him seriously.

Tom Parsons deserves a mention as does Kevin McLoughlin in my opinion. When you compare them to the profile the likes of O Shea and COC has.

Don't know how unsung, I think he was under-rated in other counties, but James Nallen is my favourite Mayo player that I've seen. Rarely had a bad game, almost every game was good to very good and also decent getting forward. But what made him great for me was even when things weren't going his or our way he'd never shirk responsibility, always playing for the jersey.

I know you're asking about our own counties but I used to be a big fan of Shane Ryan, definitely an unsung Dublin player. Not the most stylish or skilful player but, for me it seemed, he would, similar to James, never lie down for the Dublin jersey. I'm sure he had bad games but always seemed a great team player full of heart and commitment.

Donnacha walsh in the past and Paul Murphy in the present, 2 brilliant unselfish players that allways put their bodies on the line for our county.

Pretty sure SML won an all star along the way...I would regard him as one of the top players from Derry.

He has a couple of prestigious medals to his name and an all star or two but the man is unfairly unrecognized in my opinion.

i wouldnt say he was unfairly recognised during his playing days. He was an iconic figure for Ireland in the International rules series for years. Somone like Conleith Gilligan, Kevin McCloy or Johnny McBride .

Kieran Duffy for Monaghan. Under the radar in defence due to the Wylies, Corey, O'Connell & Walsh but is always steady

Most of them are star players/young players coming though.

I think you misunderstood the question.

I always thought Anthony Thompson was very under rated for us. In 2011 when we met Tyrone in the Ulster semi final he lost possession deep in Tyrone territory. A usually fatal mistake against the Red Hands. They broke down the field at pace and looked to be in with a great goal chance only for Thommo had sprinted back and got in a fantastic block. Tyrone were well on top at that stage and a goal could have finished us that day. Who knows where the Jimmy McGuinness project would have ended up? Jim often references that as a key game. The fact that Donegal were finally able to beat Tyrone in Championship football lifted a massive psychological barrier.

He also got forward to great effect and was well able to take a score.

Big fan of Sean Marty, He might under rated he was like steel in some of the compromised rules as well. Tough player.
