what would you be thinking if you were David Clarke and Hennelly is getting picked ahead of you. centerfield (Mayo) - Posts: 360 - 24/01/2019 17:39:34 2159326 Link 0 |
Not a patch on our dreadful NFL and championship record in MacHale park for the last 20 years and only two years ago ye beat us there. To be honest we are down to the bare bones, lost another three starters to injury in the last two FBD games. Team will start with at least 4 players that never played a Div 1 game before and our bench will be filled with players looking to make their debut. Far from idea but it is what it is and i suppose Mayo are showing us great respect by starting such a strong team. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3757 - 24/01/2019 19:15:07 2159334 Link 0 |
Maybe Mayo should rest Andy for this game so both sets of supporters will enjoy a good game of football. Vishred (Mayo) - Posts: 303 - 24/01/2019 20:11:59 2159341 Link 0 |

I do worry that Horan will stick with Hennelly, has never been good enough at this level. Picked for his apparently superior kicking but that has never been proven when given the chance. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7899 - 25/01/2019 03:42:09 2159391 Link 1 |
Hennelly tries to hard with the kick-outs, always trying for the difficult one that if it comes off he will look great but hes not consistent with them. tommy132 (Mayo) - Posts: 602 - 25/01/2019 08:59:34 2159398 Link 0 |
He did indeed I forgot that.

I know but a team of Mayos experience and ability have a dreadful home record of late. We should be winning most home games. Not making excuses but the MacHale Park surface needs a total rehaul

I think Rob in general is a very good keeper but as we all know any mistake a keeper makes is remembered. This is a fact of life if you want to mind the goals and it takes a lot of character to stand there and do your best while accepting that risk. It'd be fair to say that Rob's misfortunes have all related to high ball into the small square. It's always a judgement call what to do if the opposition player coming in has a defender on him: you can stand your ground and if he doesn't score and it's forgotten 10 seconds later, or do you try to clear him and possibly your own defender out and if he doesn't score it's forgotten 10 seconds later. Do either of these and he scores and the 99% of the other things you did well will be forgotten 10 seconds later, 10 days later and 10 years later! I hope Rob just plays a blinder on Saturday! Sorry but the problem is there has been many incidents under a high ball and he just isn't a presence in there. And his kickouts have been hit and miss. I would love for him to do brilliantly and cement his place but he has had plenty of chances.

Roscommon long long overdue a good performance in Castlebar and after blowing Galway aside in last weeks FBD League final I can see them taking down a Mayo side who are taking things nice and handy no doubt. Stroing team on paper but probably are not putting in the hard yards at training. Ros by 2, 3/1 on an away win is printing money WaitingInTheLongGrass (Roscommon) - Posts: 165 - 25/01/2019 12:28:13 2159451 Link 0 |
they should be longer odds given all the hammerings theyve taken over the past few yrs

That's all true. But Clarke is still hands-down a better goalkeeper. Even Hennelly's perceived greatest advantage over Clarke, his accuracy from kickouts, has gone awry at crucial times leading to opposition scores (All-Ireland final replay 2016, Galway game earlier that season). Hard to know how this one will pan out, given Mayo's usual early season sluggishness and Ros's good early season form. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 25/01/2019 14:45:48 2159482 Link 0 |
I'm not totally disagreeing Flaker, and no player is immune from criticism. I think we all acknowledge that they work hard, but supporters expect results and disappointment is hard to take (especially when we've had so much of it!)... that's sport. It's almost unanimous amongst supporters that Clarke is the best all round keeper we have and I'd go along with that. But the mistakes other players make giving the ball away, which leads to a score, happen frequently enough, but no one remembers the way that they do Brogan's flick in 2013, or Donegal's Durcan kicking the ball straight to Donaghy which ended up being the game. The fiasco in 2016 was the management giving hostages to fortune as much as it was the ball hitting Rob Hennelly in the face and going straight into Paddy Andrew's hands. But we need to give game time to a second keeper and apart from the incidents in those two finals, which got magnified by the occasions, can we really say he makes more errors than a lot of other good keepers (even Cluxton's had the odd clanger and really bad day)? I don' t know Rob personally but I doubt he keeps being given chances because he's a charming bloke... different management regimes have acknowledged his capabilities, so it's not based on sentimentality. As I said above, Clarke's number 1 for me, but I'm happy Rob's there too on ability and merit. Pericles (Mayo) - Posts: 2521 - 25/01/2019 14:50:37 2159483 Link 0 |
Not trying to have a pop and knock a lad either but I think we are in bother if he gets the nod long term. Not great one on one either.

Have to give credit Roscommon management and their local journalists for not taking about all the players they are missing for this Div 1 campaign . Would be one of the most remarkable league results ever if Roscommon can avoid defeat against that established and very experienced Mayo line up tonight.
