Refereeing Appointments

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

David Gough has just been appointed to his FOURTH Intermediate final.
The guy was rated the number two in Ireland by Croke Park this year, he was standby ref for the All ireland final, and yet has never in a decade refereeing been appointed to a Meath SFC final, albeit he did get a replay one year.
Seems a bit oddd to me.

Davis is an excellent referee, don't understand why he has not been appointed to ref the senior final yet. Not in the click i would say.

the ccc needs a whole new review in this department, the appointment of some referees this season was farcical, we had a senchalstown man refereeing a team been managed by a senchalstown man, they are a very strange bunch who run that show in dunganny

but does he do it on a cold and windy February night in Ballinacree.... loyalty gets rewarded above talent, pure nonsense that he has never gotten one when you see the list of those that have!!!

I think David is the the best referee in Ireland and obviously in Meath, see my top ref in meath list below , do you agree ?
Would you change the list in any way ?

1 David Gough
2. David Coldrick
3.Colm McManus
4. Padraic Coyle
5. Patrick Nelis
6. Cormac Reilly
7. Hugo Whoriskey

So who would you put on the list instead of Neils

He has turned down the IFC decider on the basis it isn't fair on the best young refs coming through that he should get another one and stop them getting big day experience.
When he was appointed to referee that SFC final replay he was not appointed by the CCC locally, Leinster council over ruled them as they (Leinster) needed him to referee a Meath senior final prior to being put on their inter county panel.

People would be giving out if he got the senior final as well so its a no win situation really. Im terms of referees, think Patrick Coyle is up there with the best in the county. 1 David Coldrick 2. David Gough 3. Patrick Coyle 4. Cormac Reilly 5. Padraic Coyle 6. Patrick Nelis 7. Cormac Reilly I think one of the worrying aspects has to be the lack of referees in the county as a whole, esp younger refs. Think this is something which the County Board will have to start pushing on the clubs and start to impose fines/penalties on those who do not provide at least 1 ref. There are a lot if fixtures which need to be completed at adult level without even considering under age and the most of the refs are responsible for both.

My club has had Liam o Brien a few times the last two years and i found him very good, controls the game and is very fair, like every referee he makes mistakes but he gets the big ones right which is most important, as regards David gough i don't rate him as highly as he seems to be, made far too many mistakes down through the years and favors the dubs in big games but how he is appointed to do Dublin games is also beyond me as he has too many connections with the county.

He works for the GAA in Dublin, half the country works in the capital, his mothers a Dub, but then again if you were to ask every ref where his parents are fromand prohibit them from reffing those counties as well you'd never get any games done at all

The way referees are appointed in this county needs to be looked at as it is clearly done by who you know and loyalty, and being close to the county board 'stalwarts'. Meath posses the two best referees in Ireland, never mind Meath, and the fact that only one of them (David Coldrick in 2012) has refereed a Senior County final from 2010 through to 2017 is behond a joke. And when you look at who has got the Senior Final in that period you would have to seriously consider that loyalty and if your in the know gets you the gigs. The best referees should be appointed for the biggest days and in my opinion I would rank the referees in Meath in the following order:

1. David Coldrick
2. David Gough
3. Patrick Coyle
4. Cormac Reilly (Has his moments but is generally ok)
5. Andrew Smith (Very good young referee)

Unfortunately the rest are nowhere near the standard of these five. People would also be more tolerable towards referees if they could all manage to bring there own team of umpires (surely the know 4 GAA people in there club who would help them out) with them to matches, as you are asking for trouble showing up on your own. Some referees are very good and professional like this, however some are not.

Agree - Liam O'Brien refed the Cilles Ratoath Minor game and was very good! Saw him do a few other games and has been consistent! All the games I have seen him at are underage though - is he an adult ref too?

yes, refereed us in a intermediate semi final 2 years ago and although been beaten on the day we had no complaints, he is well able to control the game, a game should never be about a referee but we have too many who want it to be about them, intermediate semi final last weekend paidraic coyle had one bog call and he bottled it, i have seen it time and time again where referees will try bring a team back into a game by making silly calls instead of the correct one.

I agree and would have him (Joey Curley) in No 3 position but they will all be seriously challenged by the young Smith lad from Dunshaughlin, always has a full team of officials and fully alert ones at that.
