Stop tinkering .. the game evolves which is great .. stop trying to turn back the clock .. if anything focus on implementing the rules we have as many other posters have said the tackle remains a mystery .. it's ok now to push someone when u approach to tackle them and when they release the ball.. pushing over the line is mostly ok too .. tackling the ball only are u kidding ... u can chest someone to the ground in a tackle .. now u can stand over a player on the deck preventing him from getting up and that's ok ., what is also ok it seems is to just drop the ball to yourself when in a choke like tackle and buy a few more seconds to pick it up again . AnBuachaillGlas (Fermanagh)-Maybe you are correct about they way it has evolved-but it is now a lot closer to handball-not football. The rules have evolved in a way that it is very difficult for a Ref to apply all the rules. The black card was never going to work -the Ref had to be a mind reader to apply it correctly. Close games are now decided by a Ref's decision. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 02/09/2018 11:18:52 2138321 Link 2 |
Ha, you're funny! Imagine a player deliberately dropping the ball to themselves when in a "choke like tackle" in order to buy a few more seconds to pick it up again? Definitely deserves to be punished! Nothing at all wrong though with "the choke like tackle"!!!

I heard someone on the rte defending the handpass by saying that a limit would only encourage a player to kick the ball aimlessly away and teams would not be able to construct an attack. Is that not what we are trying to change in the first place? The handpass enables constant possession of the ball. Footpassing would breakdown the possession game as it is more difficult to keep ball. I think peolpe need to agree on whats wrong with the game first before tying to fix it as gaelic foootball is at a major crossroads right now and the wrong fix could make things worse. I agree you need to define the problem before trying to fix it and you have to be careful with the solutions. In saying that thus thread is about rule changes. There is probably a need to divide changes into ones that can be implemented immediately versus those that need trailing. - for example banning a pass to your goalkeeper (apart from a free) is something that should be implemented immediately. Encourages the defensive team to push up and discourages defending from messing around at the back. It's also a simple rule to implement. It probably also discourages short kick outs as the comfort of the corner back passing it back to the keeper is gone. -I like the idea of keeping attacking players and their defensive markers in their positions but don't like the idea of reffing it and think it's too restrictive as well. Control the positions from the kick outs. Mandate 6 defenders and 6 attackers to be inside the 45 for a kick out. Teams get a set amount of time to do it and if they don t oblige an indirect free is given to the opposition on the 45 metre line. This rule may need trialling. - I like the idea of the offensive mark though it would definitely need trialling. Encourages catching and kicking. There was a time when the basketball 3-pts arc line didn't exist - most would argue the game changed for the better after its implementation. As gaelic is a different sport, there is no guarantee it would also be successful - it needs to be trialled - but if this is a spectacle we want to see as a viewing public, then it seems the extra reward might stimulate taking on the extra risk.

Problem - hand passing and holding up possession. gavinswinningmatches (Dublin) - Posts: 2 - 03/09/2018 09:39:38 2138633 Link 0 |
Some good ideas and some I wouldn't like but as someone said we all want different things. I think before any changes come in or are even tried out it would be worth setting up a think tank of coaches who would examine how said changes would be used/abused by coaches and see what actual as opposed to desired effects it would have on our game lillyboy (Kildare) - Posts: 429 - 03/09/2018 10:02:52 2138642 Link 0 |
Id tweak the black card rule.. Letting go of a player before he hits the ground to avoid a black card doesnt make the challenge any less cynical in my opinion........
