Stephen Rochford and Mayo

Really can't see Jim McGuinness taking the job. He has spent the last couple of years getting his soccer coaching badges and after his Asst Mgr gig in China I'm sure he is back in Glasgow now where he is based and eyeing up getting back into the game over in the UK at some capacity.

Not emotional at all, do you want a history on Monaghan, it's not long, would only take me a few moments. I bet you are still emotional with the excitement of getting to Croke Park three times in a year.

Beats me how so many posters seem to think the Mayo managers position is an "attractive" job. It is anything but. A team with a profile that is on the stale side of maturity, they will have to find 6 or 7 high quality new young players if they are to challenge for Sam over the coming years. I don't see Mayo being serious contenders for about another 5 years...there's a rebuilding job to be done. OK if the new man comes in and just tweaks a few things they might with a bit of luck make All Ireland semi finals in the short term but if they want to be serious contenders some major personnel changes will be required. Don't envy the new manager at all given the high expectations that appear to come with the job. They will not be successful unless they find some new talent and I am sure if that new talent was there Rochford would have made use of it this year at least.

McGuinness can improve them tactically but more importantly, if they ever get there again, have them all mentally right on them big day. With all of them believing they will win and doing what it takes to win."
I agree possibly Jim would but don't see it happening for reasons already explained. As for Horan and having his chance maybe but my point was that I would see him as more a potential replacement rather than Jim.

Now, the new manager and the players are going to be scrutinized every time they step out the front door."
Compare this to what's happened in Kerry, a change of management on the way and hardly a word about it,
managing Mayo will be a tough job for whoever takes it on because it looks like the player power thing is still a big issue there, one thing I will say we get great entertainment from Mayo regardless of whether they are in or out.

What would Mayo's fans opinion be of Kevin McStay being a potential replacement?
On a personal level I disliked McStay on the Sunday Game because of a few hatchet jobs he did on some Kerry players, but I think he is a good manager and has done well (overall) with Roscommon.
Division 1 status and a Connacht title and very close to getting to a Semi-final last year. Not bad at all considering where Roscommon were coming from.

Would Horan want to come back, I always got a sense he was a bit bruised and battered from his time as Mayo manager and would probably not want to come back, a bit like our own Pat O'Shea?

County board are and always have been a joke, they think differently to everyone else. If a story which is a fact came out about chairman he would have to step down. The time they gave him to find a nee backroom was suspect.
Cant see this being play power or whatever, he had spoken to the players and was looking for new selectors after that.
County board werent happy with backroom selection, either from baggage with them or maybe werent big enuf names.
Id say this american investor might have caused a bit of it, offering all sorts of money for any manager or what ever the county board want to do

Hilarious, I suppose it's one of those jokes where you have to be there to appreciate it, then again if you have to explain a joke then maybe it's just not funny .

I'd say he is happy where he is. All he has to do is beat Wexford at home and beat Carlow too and 2019 will be seen as progress.

Then come 2020 he can see if he can get Dublin back to a Leinster hurling final.

Have to disagree with you there. I think he is much more than a one trick pony. What he achieved with Donegal in a short space of time is astonishing and Donegal seem to play with way more believe now four years after he is gone than any time in the 10 years before he took over the team.

I'd echo that.

I think what McGuinness did in Donegal was astonishing in many ways.

I remember seeing Donegal play Cork in Croker in 2009/2010 and they were awful. Now it was good Cork side but Donegal were a ragged outfit at the time. You would have been laughed out of the place had you suggested that most of those players would win an All-Ireland and 3 Ulster titles over the next 5 years. The turnaround was remarkable.
