Why Is Kerry Called The Kingdom?

Replying To KingdomBoy1:  "As Garry McMahon said in his poem , it's about pride of place and love of race that inspires the love of land.

We are the kingdom."
He also wrote, in the same song I believe, "and when we lose, there's no excuse' . Does this apply to Kerry fans nowadays in this era of Dub dominance?

Google it like a good boy and find out for yourself.

Jimbo what was your point again about people leaving their counties? 18,000 posts and you still haven't said anything interesting or of any real meaning on HoganStand.

It was an "Honour" bestowed on the County by Queen Victoria when she visited in the 19th century and she referred to it as "her beautiful kingdom of Kerry" - The name stuck ;-))

From wikipedia:
Kerry (Irish: Ciarraí or more anciently Ciarraighe) means the "people of Ciar" which was the name of the pre-Gaelic tribe who lived in part of the present county. The legendary founder of the tribe was Ciar, son of Fergus mac Róich.[5] In Old Irish "Ciar" meant black or dark brown, and the word continues in use in modern Irish as an adjective describing a dark complexion.[6] The suffix raighe, meaning people/tribe, is found in various -ry place names in Ireland, such as Osry-Osraighe Deer-People/Tribe. The county's nickname is the Kingdom.

Of course Ireland was always full of Kingdoms.
Leitrim and Cavan made up the Kingdom of Breifne which was ruled by the O'Rourkes in Leitrim. Cavans O'Reillys wanted the whole lot for themselves and got rowdy outside Ballinamore in 1256. They lost and the Kingdom was split more or less into the boundaries of today. But Cavan took the name for themselves. The Breifne county.
Leitrim meanwhile sick and tired of their neighbours decided to be known as Lovely Leitrim instead.

Well as a West Brit may I say that if it was good enough for Her Royal Highness, the name is certainly good enough for me.

Replying To avonali:  "My Dad was a Kerryman and always referred to his native county as the Kingsom. But i'D like to ask why Kerry folk proudly call their county The Kingdom. Sure there hasn't been a king around these parts since Moses was a gossoon.there might have been an oul king down there once but sure the bloody country was full of them at one time . If that was the case we could all call our county , The Kingdom or The Royal, Do we Gaels still harbour deep seated Royalist pretensions? Perhaps Kerry folk believe the title refers to their former pre/eminence in Gaelic Foitball- but sure those days are over now. Anyway if anybody from The King- sorry the county of Kerry can answer me these questions I'd be very grateful."
Former preeminence? Check the roll of honour again there kid, as someone else said your father would surely be proud of your little cheap digs at his native county.

As for Jimbo, do yourself and the rest of us a favour and log off for a while, there's a new thing called twitter which I here is made for the likes of you, amadans with more buttons on their keyboard than cells in their brain.

Who made you the adjudicator to tell people who can and cannot comment on a public forum? Don't like what people are typing then don't click on the article anymore or log off yourself and grow a pair or go look for them.
