Limerick's Forgotten Men

(Oldest Posts First)

great article in one of the papers today about Mark Keane from Limericks U21 treble team of 2000-2002. A great great side that ultimately didn't go on to Senior success...Sean O'Connor just another name from that team that fell away..anyone else?..(no point straying out into other counties now, keep it Limerick as they are in the final and haven't won in 45 years despite a good return at underage in the last 20 years or so)

Read the Mark Keane story....sad one at that. I'm glad he got his life back on track.

in fairness, Andrew O'Shaughnessy (hope he is good now health wise) Damien Reale, Conor Fitzgerald all went on and had a decent few years with the Seniors, the ones who NEVER made any impact at all in senior, maybe done one season and were heard of no more I am curious about...Gavin O'Mahony another who would be there Sunday but for retirement too...

Shaughs was a good one, just really unlucky with a serious illness. Dodge was a great old soldier for Limerick too up to last year if I am not mistaken. Wayne McNamara wasn't too bad either. Damien Reale and Eoin Kelly had epic battles in 2007, I wonder if they are still friends after it.

Here is a good article on those players from the Limerick Leader:

I think Lucey and Begley were better footballers, playing football and hurling definitely distracted that group. Pretty sure Conor Fitzgerald played plenty of football for Limerick too. The other boys on the list were all good hurlers but not standouts.

This current group doesn't seem to play much football at all and Limerick football is at its lowest point in about 25 - 30 years.

Lucey and Begley were the first big two names to emerge to the seniors from those U21 teams...they were that good management were unsure where to play them....

Goal keeper Timmy Houlihan was another from this group that got kicked into touch fairly suddenly.
