As far as I know Monaghan have never won an AI football final . My question is have they ever played in a All Ireland football final ?

1930?

Kerry beat them

They will be the smallest county (Population wise) to make a final since Roscommon

Yes . They played in the final in 1930. Kerry beat them 3-11 to 0-02.

According to the 2016 census Roscommon has a population of 64.000 and Monaghan has a population of 61, 000.

This Sunday 39 years ago by day and date I was in kerry on holiday and went to what is now Spillane a pub to watch Monaghan V Kerry in the AI semi final. I felt very confident and cheered hard when monaghan took the pitch. Unfortunately I was about 20 miles away at the final whistle and moved up to Clare the next morning early. It was not nice

I remember years ago, as a young lad, older Monaghan folk,
(now probably long gone, RIP), talking of that 1930 final. ....

Some said, it was rumored, that the team had a few drinks the night before...... highly unlikely, also unfair to them & probably unfounded.

However, a widely held view, was that several of the team contacted "food-poisoning", which easily could have happened. Food poisoning was a widespread occurrence in those days.... no fridges, poor hygiene etc.

Statement was made if they make the final, of course it is 50-50

For such a small county, this is glorious times for Monaghan. It's a fairytale considering the small
Numbers they have.

A lot of other counties need to take note
Meath
Cavan
Louth
Just 3 that could be doing better giving there size

Waynol & Wally,

Shame there's no 3rd place play off for losing semi finalists - yous could have met up to annoy the head off other.

#pay not to view.

5.14 to 7 points, I'm not surprised you booted on up the road, that was a bit of a disaster, just looked at a clip of it on youtube, Kerry looked like they were playing basketball at times, and Spillane be's on about the great brand of 'football' they used to play.

Even today a lot of teams seem to suffer a somewhat similar problem when they hit Croke Park.

Yes, but in 1980 when Roscommon played in thier last final, the county's population was less than 61,000.
According to the 1981 census, the population was 54,000 at the time.
So Monaghan would be the smallest county since then, if they were to reach the final.

Ah here !!!! Semantics !!! What was the population of Ireland in 1980 ? What percentage of the people of Ireland in 1980 were from Roscommon ? What is the population of Ireland today ? What percentage of the people of Ireland today are from Monaghan ?
